Re: Fictional Rosters
Sluggbugg,
Glad to hear it.
OK, I have a newly edited Pitchers Spreadsheet. I spent quite a bit of time the last couple of nights compiling a spreadsheet of MLBPA pitchers divided into several pitching roles--top of the rotation starters, number 2 starters, #3 starters, #4 starters, #5 starters, prospects, middle relievers, low-end relievers, set-up pitchers, and closers. I wanted to check our spreadsheet since some things seemed a bit high.
I think TT did a great job with the spreadsheets. The pitchers that I made the most changes to were the numbers 1 and 2 starters. The closer I got toward average, I noticed that TT's pitchers lined up incredibly well with MLB counterparts. The farther from average, the more I found discrepancies. So, the new edits take into account what I found. It would take a lot of time to describe everything I did, but I do want to say that I didn't take away all-stars or anything. There are still several "aces" that have ratings similar or better than Lincecum and Halladay. I just tried to pull pitchers closer toward their MLB counterparts. I think the new spreadsheet is pretty good.
The biggest changes were to the pitchers' hitting ratings. I found that most MLB pitchers, even in the NL, had contact ratings no higher than 10. The old spreadsheet had much too high hitter ratings. For the starters I spent quite a bit of time adjusting those ratings. I didn't get rid of all of the pitchers that can hit. I left a number of pitchers in the 20's and 30's as far as contact, visibility, and discipline go.
There are just too many pitchers on the list so I couldn't spend that much time on all of the relievers, especially since most of them will never bat in a game. Even in the NL, set-up pitchers and closers just aren't left in the lineup to bat. So I ended up cutting and pasting blocks of ratings that I had already adjusted. There will be some repetition, but hopefully nothing crazy. If you see anything weird as you edit, you can always bump things down or up a handful of points.
Now, I was just going to hang on to the new spreadsheet and make the changes myself at the end, but there are just too many changes. Sooo... if you wouldn't mind going back into the pitchers that you've already edited, it would save me a ton of time if you'd make the tweaks as you find them on the new spreadsheet. It shouldn't take you too long, since I didn't edit any of the pitches or pitch ratings. I only changed the primary pitcher ratings--stamina, h/9, etc.--and the hitting/fielding ratings.
I hope it's not too much to ask. I think this newest version of the spreadsheet is the best version yet and will save time polishing later.
Thanks everyone! Keep up the good work!
I posted the link for the new spreadsheet on the first post of the thread, but here it is below:

Ok, I had to watch tv with the wife for a while. At least she wanted to watch MMA. God I love that woman! Anyway back to work. lol
Got the new spreadsheet RM and am happy to go back and make adjustments. I noticed that some of the pitchers were better hitters than some of the fielders. lol I was gonna ask if you wanted us to make adjustments on that, but you were already working on it. lol
One thing that jumps out at me, and maybe the whole game is just set up that way, but everybody throws 96-97 mph. Its gonna be tough hitting some of these guys with 97mph cheese and 73 mph change ups. lolComment

Thanks for mentioning that. I asked TT about the pitch velocities and I can't remember if he responded, but my assumption is that the first number for each of the pitches refers to MPH and not to the rating number.
You're right that if we rated the pitches as they're listed, the velocities would be a little hard to believe, but if you look at them as MPH numbers they make a lot more sense.
I looked over some of the hitter ratings for the pitchers and, because of how I cut and pasted blocks of ratings, you'll probably notice some repeats. The hitting ratings for the pitchers aren't too significant. Most important is just to have them a little closer to the MLB numbers. So just vary up some ratings here and there as you go.

Re: Fictional Rosters
Rockies are completely done.
Made the changes to the other teams' pitcher velocity ratings as well. I like seeing the bulk of the guys throwing in the 87-89 range instead of the 95-97 range. There is still a couple fireballers though, just like it should be.
Have you talked to any of the other guys besides GoCubsGo and Mr.Random? Are they making progress?
I have got to go to bed. Starting to see double. lol Will start on the Dodgers tomorrow.Last edited by sluggbugg; 04-24-2011, 03:12 AM.Comment

Sorry I haven't responded.
I haven't heard from Turpintine and in his "Arena" it says he hasn't posted anything since early this month. So I'm not sure about that.
TripleThreat is really busy this time of year and had to remove his name from the NL East. So, any of those teams are open if you want to keep editing teams.
I left Bodizzy's name on the Giants, even though I think it will just be Mr. Random's now. I just didn't want to remove Bodizzy without a trace without having heard from him first.
The due date for my daughter was yesterday, so the baby is coming any day now. I have two papers due for the end of the current semester in a couple of weeks and am going to be busy with that. I might have a bit more time near the middle or late May, but then I have to finish and defend my MA thesis by late June.
I hate to pull back from the project I started, but I'm having a hard time finding time to edit players. I might try to find some time in the mornings next week, but that will depend on the baby.
Thanks Sluggbugg, and let me know if you want any of the NL East teams.

Re: Fictional Rosters
Way to start something that you can't finish! lol just kidding. Its a video game and life has to come first, especially when we are talking about a newborn coming anyday.
Ive got loads of free time (no job, remember lol) and my wife is going out of town on thursday and will be gone all weekend. Only thing that sucks is I have to cook for myself which can be dangerous. With your life being hectic and TripleThreats life busy, if you want, I'm willing to take on compiling the rosters duties as well. I don't want to steal your project by any means, but I want to help all I can.
As far as the National League East goes, since I'm done with the West I'll start on the Braves (my favorite team anyway) and maybe Random or GoCubsGo will pick up a team. Will get it done one way or another.Comment

I really appreciate your picking up the slack on this.
I've made notes on some of the changes I wanted to make at the end and my thoughts on how to do some of that. I've also made a number of spreadsheets for references on potential grade distributions and other things that may be of some use to you. When the time comes, I'll PM you some of that information so that I don't clutter up the thread with that now. I can more easily find time to maintain communication via OS than I can find time to get on the PS3. So, it will be easy to keep an ongoing dialogue about how to finish things up.
You're doing me a huge favor! I can't pay you, but you can have my Kudos!
