I had a bash when I used mlb.com and briefly tried again when I started using fangraphs but to be honest I am pretty hopeless when it comes to using Excel.

I especially couldn't work out how I could get all the data on one worksheet when it was spread over 30 pages on fangraphs.

With me hating Fifa 14 this year, I was actually thinking about having another go, as I would quite like to get the minor league data in.

Guess I should properly read Baseball Hacks, instead of skimming over it!!

Re: My Ratings Calculator (with download)

Somebody messaged me asking about creating single year ratings from data that wasn't from fangraphs and didn't have a player id.

As it's a single year, this actually doesn't pose a problem, as all you need to do is follow the instructions as normal but instead of putting in player ids, simply copy the list of players names into the player id column on all the relevant pages... thus using the player's name as the player id.

I have done this with minor league data and it worked ok.

I had only put the MiLb worksheet in the version for 2010 onwards but have now added it to the other version as well.

Think it should be far right next to all the 2009 data.

Like I said earlier, I'm not sure it's much use now but I have been looking at creating an actual minor league calculator as well.

Jimbo, on your 2013 calculator for excel i cant select any pitchers down past B.J. Rosenberg. Any help with this? Thats where the drop down menu ends for me.

Not sure what the problem is, as I have just downloaded the file and the pitchers go all the way down to Z.

I would suggest downloading the file again and if that doesn't work, let me know.

Just in case re-downloading the file hasn't worked...

Open the file in Excel and click on the "Formulas" tab along the top and then click on "Name Manager" which brings up a box that relates to the list of players names.

If you select/highlight "PlayerList" then look at the bottom of the page where it says "Refers to:"

Make sure it says something like =Players!$B$1:$B2497 (The second number needs to be at least 2018)

Awesome! I got my spreadsheet all set up with the formula for the MLE, so now all I gotta do is input the numbers and let it do all the work instead of going back and forth to the site. Much easier, much faster! I also found the secret to the formula in the minorleaguesplit website.. put 100 in each field, you got your formula right there (if the number is 70, it means it's 0.70, 114 = 1.14...tada) so I was able to get the rest of the leagues (AA, A+, A)

So as of now, my pitchers will probably be the beasts in the game (the lowest overall rating for the orioles so far is in the mid-high 60's for like a couple players), hopefully it won't affect the minor leagues too much.

Speed is worked out using the Bill James method that incorporates 5 factors: stolen base %, stolen base attempts, triples, runs scored and GIDP.

Each factor gets a score out of 10 and then I take the four highest figures and make a score out of 100.

Alright I took a look at Jim Edmonds' 2004 season and I'm curious what your speed rating would be for him. 72% success rate on the bases out of 11 total attempts, 4 GDPs the entire season almost (500abs), 102 runs scored, and 3 triples.

A quick calculation of his five speed factors give scores of 4.22, 3.6, 4.9, 4.51 and 8.39 meaning an overall speed figure of 55.

I should point out that looking at the rating for one year is probably not the best way to go about things. Ideally, you would have a few years worth of data so that you get an average (weighted or otherwise) of what their figure should be.

                          So for the period 2009-2013:

                          Ichiro was rated 67,71,71,67,67 = Avg 69 or 3yr Wgt 68
                          Michael Bourn was 92,80, 87, 86, 80 = Avg 86 or 3yr Wgt 83

Wouldn't a speed of 55 = more than 4 GDPs for an entire season? He doesn't hit the ball on the ground a whole lot, but that still seems a bit strange. Don't get me wrong Edmonds was said to have less than blazing speed in CF, but 55 seems a little lower than i would've expected for not hitting into a lot of dps.

Yeah but the ability to not GIDP's is only one factor that gets considered... and he gets a very good score of 8.39 out of 10 for this.

For all the other factors he is below average, hence the overall score of 55.

Of course, if you wanted to simply use the GIDP factor score as the way of creating your speed rating, then that is entirely up to yourself.

But I would then ask you a question:

In 2011 and 2012, Ichiro Suzuki GIDP's 11 and 12 times respectively... does this make him slow?

No Ichiro is not slow, he's a high average good contact, slap hitter and Edmonds was a .285 hitter that hit a lot of fly balls. 11-12 GDPs in over 600abs is very good for a contact hitter that routinely hits the ball on the ground. I understand the argument that one category does not define a players actual speed. (Some people are just really good at stealing bases right?) I'm very curious about how the game rates player speed in comparison to your assessment. Like in last years' game for example Skip Schumaker was rated as 75 speed, and this years' game has him at 39 speed wtf? What would you Carlos Beltran's speed from 2001-2004? I'm interested in making a historical roster set from either 2003 or 04 using your ratings system. I'm also curious how you assess arm strength?
