Re: Porting Knight's 1994 set to MLB 14

    Great feedback, thanks!

The appearances will come. Betterai is doing them.

The version I release at the moment has the vitals, the stats and some basic appearence (Skin color & ḩair color and style, eyebrow color and style, eye black, facial hair...) from Knight's MLB 12 set. I've set the basic pants of all the players to Stirrups from the NL Central going forward. Also from NL Central forward, the players used as bases to create the mod have been more genericized to remove stuff like braces, glasses, tar on the helmet, wristbands etc... removing modern catcher helmets, knee savers, that Nike logo thingy... I think this will help the players look better until Betterai gets to them and will help him too because the equipment is more generic.

When we're done this will be a 1:1 copy of the MLB 12 version, plus minor leaguers and free agents.

Short update: I'm half-way through the NL West.

Re: Porting Knight's 1994 set to MLB 14

OS 94 NL Complete is up in the Vault!

      - All the NL teams are done!
      - Arizona & Tampa Bay are generic'd.
      - Free Agents are generic'd.
      - Two free agents! George Brett (1993 retiree) & Gary Carter (1992 retiree). Old and limited. I guess you could use Brett as a DH VS RHP (?), but the Kid is pure nostalgia (and defensive help if your main catcher is real bad defensively and you want some late game security...) . And also my favourite ball player ever, such a shame he died young. I'm not all that satisfied with their faces, but there you go.

Also, there's an error in there: All the players that have been built on the 9 YOS base, that do not have a second position have one set anyway (2B/3B/LF/RF, if I remember correctly). It was precoded by SCEA in the player I used as a base, but I can fix it. Just have to set a second position, accept the change, get back in the editor and remove it. I'll fix it in the next version.

I'm taking the weekend off! Enjoy the National League! I start on the AL (East?) on Monday.

Re: Porting Knight's 1994 set to MLB 14

And I'm back, ahead of schedule!

It is a great nostalgia trip. Here's something I did last Friday: I started a franchise fantasy draft and I had a rule: I could only draft 1994 guys for my team, until there's none left to draft that would make sense (Can't draft 20 RPs in a row...) and then fill the rest with generics.

I was drafting around 25th or 26th so I drafted high in rounds 2-4-6-8 etc....

          My 25-Man Depth Chart:

          SP: Gross-Candiotti-Hershiser-Tewksbury-Valenzuela
          RP: Carrasco-Plesac-Bedrosian-Leskanic-Bielecki
          CP: Worrell

          C: Pagnozzi-Slaught-Carter
          1B: Galarraga-Brett-Segui
          2B: Lemke-Sandberg
          3B: Bonilla
          SS: Ozzie
          LF: D. May
          CF: Butler
          RF: T. Gwynn-McGee

Heh, looking at it now, that outfield depth is real thin... I got Mabry, Brian L. Hunter and Lou Frazier in AAA... I guess... I can sacrifice an old infielder to bring one of them up... Gary Carter?!? Hell no, George Brett. He's a prick anyway.

Also, right now up on the vault: O.S. 1994 (4 Teams Beta). Look for my name: Phil Parent

Play as the Braves, the Marlins, the Expos or the Mets. No custom equipment, partial faces, they'll be done in bulk at the end, but I've done enough of the faces (Face shape, facial hair, eye color, eyebrows, hair, skin complexion, eyeblack, glasses...) that everybody will at LEAST look similar and some guys don't need much more morphing to look spot on.

I've done pitcher rotations and lineups to the best of my recollection. I'll probably go into Knight's set and copy those down too before final release.

There is a difference in calculating overalls between MLB 12 and MLB 14 so some guys are OV'd higher and some lower BUT, OV is pretty much only cosmetic and it shouldn't affect gameplay. I'd love if you guys could play as the four teams (against one another, I suspect the default teams would overpower them because Knight's data is more realistic than Sony's default "perfect" players...) and give some feedback if the experience is similar to what it was on MLB 12.

I watched a couple games and it looked okay to me. For whatever reason, both Maddux and Saberhagen (demi-gods in the original set) tended to struggle in their first inning before becoming dominant later in the game. And also, MLB 14's player of the game thingy seems to be broken because I've had a situation where a player had 4 out of 5 RBIs in a game and he didn't win it... It was Florida's Chuck Carr, quite the hidden gem...

Having service years in there will REALLY help the Franchise experience if I ever do make full 90-man rosters. I really wish they give us one pitcher with 6+ years of service, that would make it perfect.

Love your roster so far Phil! Downloaded and played for the first time with these this afternoon. I am an avid Pirates fan and did notice one thing wrong with the roster. One guy in particular. Brian R Hunter 1B for Pittsburgh actually throws left and bats right. You have him R And R right now. Excellent over all so far though. Love the trip back in time.

One more thing. If you are still looking for an editible EXPORTABLE pitcher with longer service time. Joe Beimel of Seattle Mariners in the most resent SCEA roster has 11.018 years service time and Also on Seattle SP Chris Young has 7.045 Years service time.

Thanks again for these rosters they are looking great so far!

              Nice catch! I'll fix it.

Also, I found out about Beimel & Young after I finished the NL East. Once Betterai finishes the faces & equipment work, I will go through the NL East and edit the pitchers that need the longer service time accordingly. NL Central and NL West have them.

By rule of thumb, anybody that has 5-6-7-8-9 real YOS, I base on Young (So that the guys that had 5 years IRL will complete their 6th year and be FA at the end of the year in Franchise, as they would have been for real, and anybody that has 10+ years is based on Beimel.

Also, something I noticed: my spreadsheet has been private so I don't think anybody but me could see it. Should be fixed now. Just in time to add a third free agent on there: future all-star, 22 year-old Brendan Donnelly who in 1994 was a free agent after being released by the Cubs and played in the Independant leagues, one year away from becoming a scab and ruining his chances of ever being in the game for real. I made him an high C prospect, with a starting OV of 53. Should pan out okay.

And now... doing the AL East, starting with the Jays.

Couple of questions for you Phil. I looked at your spreadsheet and noticed a ton of relief pitchers with Stamina below 10. SCEA's rosters don't have anyone below 20 if I recall. How is pitcher stamina determined? Also how is pitcher contact and power determined? I noticed that something like 95% of the pitchers were all 1's or 2's. I know this might be nitpicking a bit but there were some decent hitting NL pitchers back then like guys like Mike Leake these days.

I didn't come up with any of these ratings, except those of the Free Agents. I'm porting Knight's 1994 set from MLB 12 and adding to it.

Knight used the OSFM rating system, and I'm doing the same for my FA's. You can find the spreadsheets for it at the top of the board in the pinned OSFM topic.

Standards are different in the set because in the SCEA data, the players are a bit too good / unrealistic, IMO.

All the pitchers that have stamina this low are either closers who can't be expected to pitch more than one inning efficiently, their setup guy who likewise throws an inning in the 8th, or specialists (lefties) who will come in to get one batter out before they're pulled for another guy.

                  For hitting...

The pitchers that have 1's, are the usual "Bunt or get struck out" pitchers while some others (Like Mike Hampton, name that comes to mind) have higher stats because they can bat some. A Contact rating of around 25 will give you a batting average of around .200... most pitchers will never reach that over a sizable sample. By giving them all 1's, you just pretty much make sure they are as bad as you can make them. Touchy situation really, for balance and realism, most pitchers are truly that bad at it. And still, even with all 1's, they'll get a hit one in a while.

Also, if they are good at bunting, then they will still be 1's at Contact hitting. Bunting is its separate stat, and I think all pitchers are at least CAPABLE of bunting to advance a runner once in a while so nobody has 1 for Bunting amongst pitchers. The NL pitchers average 32 for Bunting.

Re: Porting Knight's 1994 set to MLB 14

I'll just jump in on two points quickly...and I don't want to derail the thread....

On RP stamina.....I find that anything above 20 was causing multiple albeit slight "issues".
First....too many 3 inning appearances for guys that are simply 1 inning pitchers.
Although I didn't go game by game....I simply looked at GP vs. IP.....62 Game appearances and 58 IP......you get it.
I try and keep the long relief guys(guys that would have 7 or 8 GS's) and regardless of IP...I would give those guys 30's/40's and if he was a spot starter....50's or 60's for stamina.....so that you or a team wasn't completely hamstrung with low stamina pitchers.
The other was too many appearances in general. It wasn't uncommon to see guys getting 90+ appearances as they would never hit the in game code of XXX stamina to have the CPU say..."not using him today". Now while the RP slider would handle this....I just took it a step further as I like to set up my ratings for DEFAULT slider settings and let the user tweak from there.

On pitchers and batting.........most pitchers would have sub .200 BA's....most in the .150 range. Not happening if you give them anything above 20-25....and there was still too much happening even in the 10-20 range. So basically unless you had Hampton or the crazy guy from the Cubs(cannot remember his name right now)....you and the CPU were pinch hitting when necessary. You could probably give a pitcher anything up to 15 and it wouldn't matter much...but I didn't see enough reason to sort out a guy hitting .138 from the guy hitting .164 or .188....

                    Just pinch hit!!!

                    M.K.

Thanks for the info both you guys. Great info to know. Make a lot of sense on the Stamina issue. It didn't really click till you explained it Knight. Now after reading that I can remember seeing it in a franchise I almost completed on 13. Is there any difference in 14 as far as pitcher stamina? I have noticed the manager hook has been a bit quicker on default sliders than last year. And I have been playing lots of quick counts and noticed reliever stamina being lower. It may just be me but a one inning pitcher getting tired after 20 pitches seems a bit low. Maybe that is an issue with quick counts though.

I downloaded the NL file off the vault, and have just a few quick questions for you.

I'm assuming all ratings for the NL are complete, right? I don't know why, but I was confused as to if some players were rated correctly or others were left for interpretation.

Second, I noticed there are a few more bench players than relief pitchers. I didn't actually count the amount of pitchers on each staff (dumb on my part lol). Was that done intentionally?

                          Thanks!

The ratings were done to be as accurate as possible, except for the appearences which arent 100% done yet. But, players have the right skin colors, right facial hair, right hair style and color....

Every player who played a game in the show in 1994 is in the data, so if a team used more fielders than pitchers, then they'll have more fielders, yes.

                              Awesome!

I think you'll have an easier time with equipment going foward because I generic'd the equipment of my template players, so some things (like that Nike logo on the jersey) are no longer around because they wouldn't have been around in 94. Also, modern catcher masks, knee savers, all braces, are gone.

Are there pieces of equipment you'd say A LOT of players use? I can edit my data to put it in so you won't have to change it in the future.
