Re: Speed Ratings - MLB The Show 17
I haven't been able to take a deep dive into individual ratings for the Pirates, but Jordy Mercer's arm always seems a little underrated. According to DaddyLeagues, he's at 70str/64acc.
The strength is in the ballpark -- he pitched as a closer in college -- although it doesn't really capture his quick release. He also has a track record of accuracy with only 6 throwing errors in nearly 3500 innings since 2014. So I guess in scouting terms, it's probably above average strength and plus release & accuracy.
EDIT OK, so DaddyLeagues is useful... to show I'm not a total homer, the following arms are overrated IMO:- Cervelli (77/73) Not with his career 21% CS
- Stewart (75/75) Career 30% CS but tailing off recently and eye test just doesn't say above average
- McCutchen (72/69) No way, probably below average strength & avg to below accuracy, hence the fuss about moving him to RF.
- Jaso (76/67) I know he used to catch, but I can't see this.
- Freese (73/55) More of an average arm, can't see it being stronger than Mercer or Kang.
Some guys who probably deserve a bump in addition to Mercer:- Marte (83/59) Probably should be stronger and definitely more accurate. Can't pile up assists like he does without on target throws.
- Polanco (72/65) Accuracy probably OK, but strength could be raised.
- Kang (66/72) Should be stronger and, in fairness, less accurate
And since this thread was started for speed ratings, guess it's worth mentioning I don't see anything too crazy for the Bucs. Maybe some +/-5 guys or adjustments to fit your scale, but no one glaring. The closest might be Josh Bell, who has a 40/80 run tool according to Fangraphs, is a bigger guy coming off knee surgery and is rated 60 speed.Last edited by Qb; 04-10-2017, 12:03 PM.Comment

Re: Speed Ratings - MLB The Show 17
Not sure if it's been touched upon and I know it's technically not just the speed rating but has anyone looked at the corresponding steal rating for some players? I ask because whenever I look at Jean Segura and his, what I consider low steal rating even though he stole 30+ bags last season, I'm left trying to figure out what the scale is for that rating exactly. I'm sure he isn't the only one around the league with that issue so was curious if anyone had done anything about it or has a recommendation.Comment

Re: Speed Ratings - MLB The Show 17
Quick little update on Rajai Davis: played ~30 games with him as my 4th outfielder and saw his speed drop from 91 to 88. I presume this means had I left him at his default 98 he'd be a 95 by May 1, and it suggests that there's no telling how much speed he could lose by season's end. Might be best to just leave him at default.Comment
