    MBMavs20 Pitch Edits 2023

Hello everyone, now that the season has started, I will post my pitch edits for the 2022 season. I hope you enjoy them.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

2022 data is under sheet 7 tab at the bottom.

Now, I know pitching edits are not an exact science, but I try and make them as realistic as possible. It drives me nuts when pitchers have incorrect pitches.

The following list of pitchers are listed with a Knuckle-Curve as their Curveball because I feel it best represents the movement of their Curve:

Ryan Burr, Michael Kopech, Jose Cisnero, Jake Odorizzi, Zach Jackson, Josiah Gray, German Marquez, Jose Ruiz, and Alex Lange.

ALL other pitchers who throw a Knuckle Curve should have it listed. I mentioned the above pitchers because they don't throw a Knuckle Curve. However, since they throw a faster Curveball, the Knuckle Curve better mimics the break of their curve. Hope that makes sense.

For pitchers listed with only 2 pitches, I give them a 4 Seam or Running Fastball as their 3rd pitch, and give them 15 control and 10 break.

I will also update injured pitchers who did not pitch last year and add rookies as they get promoted to the Show.

    As always, feedback is welcomed.

No knuckle curve for Gerrit Cole?

For pitchers with only 2 real pitches, does setting the third to have 15 control and 10 break influence the AI i.e. does it make the AI use the pitch less often?

Gerrit Cole does have a Knuckle Curve. Listed as his 3rd pitch.

That is a good question that maybe the developers could answer. My understanding is the AI will use the BB/9 rating when you sim a game, so the pitch ratings are more for the human player.

My bad, didn't see his name in that list in the OP

I was talking about during played games - have you noticed a difference in usage?

Not really. It’s mostly relief pitchers who only throw 2 pitches and they usually last 1 inning, 2 almost.

Any chance you could do Jhony Brito from the Yankees? He’s made two starts so far and looks pretty damn good.

              Hey MBMavs,

              I've always appreciated your work.

Have you ever listed your formula for how you do this?

Yes, I will start adding pitchers that make their Major League debut to the sheet.

I like to wait until the starters have about 3 or 4 starts under their belt.

                    Thanks Dowie.

I posted my control formula a couple of years ago on one of my pitch edit threads.

For control, I split the pitchers into starters and relievers. I take the best strike percentage for a starter and reliever in the Majors from that season.

Then, I divide strike percentage by ball percentage and multiply that by the best strike percentage for a starter/reliever.

For example, in 2022 Kevin Gausman led all starters in strike percentage with 70%.

If I take Justin Verlander's 4 seam from 2022, he threw 24% for strikes and 30% for balls.

So, 24 divided by 30 times 70 = 56 would be his control rating on his 4 Seam.

I usually will go 95 for the high and 20 for the low. If the pitcher has a low number of pitches I try and adjust accordingly. So, if a pitcher threw 10 sliders and 8 of them were for strikes, I don't want to give him a control rating that is too high. Unrealistic to me.

As for break, I came up with a formula years ago. If a 4 Seam has over 4 inches of horizontal movement, I go with a Running Fastball. If a Curveball has over 6 inches of horizontal movement, I go with a Sweeping Curveball. Splitter has more horizontal movement, I go with a forkball. If a Slider has over 5 inches of horizontal movement I go with a Slurve. I also prefer 2 Seam over Sinkers because most Sinkers have more horizontal movement then vertical movement.

Even if you give a pitch a 0 break rating, it will still movement a little bit so I used that as a starting point.

Everyone likes to do pitch edits differently so it's really up to the player. I think my edits work well with MLB and I enjoy making them.

Sorry for my babbling. I should just post a video. LOL

                        This idea intrigues me.

A lot of the Sony pitchers seem so generic.......this would def spice things up a little.

Does leaving the control and consistency sliders at default work best w/ your edits, or do I need to raise or lower those to get the most out of your edits?

The past couple of years I have used Mike Lowe's sliders in my franchise. In my opinion, the computer throws too many strikes so lowering the CPU pitch control and consistency helps.

The Sony pitchers have always felt generic. That's why I do my edits. Gives the user a little more variety.

Hey brother. Did 23 change how edits work. Some guys I cannot get MPH to where it needs to be. Ex Felix Bautista cannot get his sinker upto 99. I know in the past once all changes were made the numbers would be where they need to be. But I've tried everything and can't get the sinker upto 99. All other MPH on his pitches ate correct. Also on some guys cant get MPH down low enough and on some guys circle change I can move it 0 to 99 and MPH will not change. It will effect other pitch speeds but not the circle change. Hope that made sense.
