I'm just going with the progressing settings that adjust as I get better, and right now, I'm on Veteran (about 6 games into the season). I've noticed that I get relatively few walks, and I have to adjust the CPU control and strike frequency quite low to even draw one or two a game. The most ridiculous example was RA Dickey. I had CPU control at 3 and Strike Frequency at 1, and he had something like 76 out of 88 pitches thrown for strikes. It was insanely frustrating. I mean, I got some hits off him and won the game, but the ratio was way off. If I didn't jump on the first pitch, it was 0-2 every at-bat. Other games haven't been nearly that bad...I usually draw at least 1, maybe 2 walks. But it's still not optimal, and the control and strike frequency sliders are still at 3 and 1, respectively.

Is All-Star more realistic? Will I get thrashed as a newbie?
This is my problem too. I can't hit on All-Star but Veteran is just too strike heavy. I rarely get a 3-0 count even taking every pitch and when I do here comes strike strike strike. 3 ball counts in general are rare. Overall strike percentages aren't bad, but it's when they throw those strikes that really throw off the balance and make it hard to draw walks, even being patient. You just end up hitting with 2 strikes in nearly every at bat.

This is with strike frequency, pitcher control, and pitcher consistency all at 4 on Veteran.

Quick Counts are a nice option (esp. on the lower levels), because the simmed pitches are based off of hitters and pitchers ratings, thus resulting in a realistic count when your AB "actually" begins...

I'm using that, and have CPU strike frequency on 3, because they still pound the zone on counts with 3 or less "virtual" pitches...

Might not be for everybody, but I'm getting solid strike percentages out of the CPU versus my Veteran hitting interface, using the aforementioned adjustments...
