    Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***

After a disappointing 2030 season, my 2031 Braves are right back on track heading into the trade deadline. There have been a significant amount of injuries to the team as there were last year, but the team has plenty of depth and I am not dealing with an entire roster of players all having simultaneous down years.

My team has an MLB best 74-34 record but only a 1 game lead in the division as the Mets have kept up and are 73-35. No other team in the NL even has 60 wins as the Cardinals are the 3rd best NL team at 58-50. The AL does have 4 teams above 60 wins with the Blue Jays leading them all at 66-42.

My pitching has been elite once again, the best it has been in any season thus far, with a 3.11 era. Surprisingly, that is not the best in baseball, only second best. The Mets have a 2.89 era which is just ridiculous.

On the other side, my offense ranks 3rd best in the majors despite all the injuries my team has racked up this year. Acuna has missed 41 games. Harris has also missed 41 games. Gelof has missed 74 games. Abrams has missed nearly 20 games. About all the core pieces of the lineup missed significant time, but the lineup has continued to chug along.

In the offseason we did let Matt Olson and Max Fried hit free agency. Both actually found their way to the Mets. Fried had regressed statistically for 3-4 straight years and simply wanted too long term of a deal for way too much money each year, so it was not viable to re-sign someone at his age for the terms he wanted. Unfortunately, he has bounced back in a big way and has a 2.67 era for the Mets. Olson, on the other hand, had simply regressed significantly and has found himself DFA'd by the Mets and hasn't really had any impact at all this year.

While Olson was primarily a DH for me the last two years as CJ Abrams of all players was moved to 1B by my coaching staff, he was still effective for me in his final years despite clearly regression. It's sad to see him fall off a cliff so hard, but at least it was not on my dime. Freddie Freeman is still chugging along at 41 years old and I actually signed him to a 1-year deal to be a captain in the locker room and a decent bat off the bench. However, he's actually been the DH for most of the year. He's only hitting .246 and has a -0.1 WAR in 73 games, so he's not been anything special, but it was only $6 million to bring him back home for what I suspect is his last dance.

It took me a full year, but I was able to replace Sean Murphy with another elite catcher. After the abysmal showing from the position last year for my team as I rotated in bodies trying to just get average play, the Rockies saw their stud catcher Drew Romo hit free agency. I was able to sign the 29 year old 75/75 catcher to a 5-year $102.5 million deal with a team option that 5th year, so I once again have the best catcher in all of baseball.

I think I have the best team in baseball once again, but the Mets are going to be a pest to deal with all year with their pitching staff and defense. Their rotation on paper is barely a top 10 unit, but it has an elite defense behind it, so even if their staff is overachieving some at this point, the regression won't be too hard with that defense.

I have also built an elite defense which is why I think my team era is the best it has been in this entire save. I do think while we both have elite pitching and fielding, my offense is clearly better than the Mets and that will be the difference maker that hopefully keeps me in 1st place once the season is over with.

      Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***

2031 regular season comes to an end. My Braves held on to win the division. The NL East as a whole was an insane division. The team remained injured all throughout the year, but the depth I've been lucky enough to build was enough to win yet another division title.

Unfortunately, Michael Harris will be out for likely the entirety of the playoffs. Reliever Xian-yao Huo has had a blister that has bothered him nearly the entirety of September that will hopefully go away by the time the NLDS begins so he can make the playoff roster. Rookie pitcher Rob Ruf is also on the IL as we enter the postseason, but he has been injured since early May, so his loss doesn't feel as significant since he has been gone nearly the entire year.

Here's some snips showing off what happened in 2031 which was apparently Max Fried's redemption tour.

        Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***

2031 was a return to the top for my Braves. The team also had a near flawless playoff run, but after getting up 3-0 in the WS they gave Cleveland 2 games before finishing them off for good. 4 titles in 5 years. I don't know what happened in that 2030 season. Everyone on the team just had down years simultaneously I guess.

I'm honestly a little shocked at the dynasty I've been able to build in this save. Like I said before, I had never won the WS in a past OOTP title. I always had pretty realistic Braves' experiences where my teams would win the NL East and then choke in the playoffs consistently. I want to see how great of a run I can have with this Braves team I've built, but I've also had so much success in this save that I already feel fulfilled and partially wanting to take on another challenge like being a GM for a small market team, or being a manager only for one of the bottom of the barrel teams. I may end up putting this save on a hiatus at some point and doing that. We'll see.

Anyways, here are some snips showing what happened in the playoffs.

          Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***

And the WS champion player card summary. The year Harris had despite being injured so much is just incredible. The guy put up 4 WAR and barely played half a season.

          Spoiler

Heading into the offseason there aren't too many tough decisions to make. Freeman did retire on his own and will get #5 retired. I was thinking of forcing him to retire if he didn't do it on his own, so I am thankful I didn't have to do that. He got to go out on top. The only thing is he wore #22 this past season and the game is trying to retire that, but I will fix that to #5.

The irritating thing is my owner died a few years ago and his son took over. Despite his Generous Financial trait he has cut the budget 3 straight years. It had gotten up to $280 million in 2025 & 2026, then was dropped in 2027 to $264 million. Then it returned to $280 million for 2028 & 2029. Then my owner died, his son took over and immediately dropped it to $278 million in 2030. It was $274 million this past year in 2031. Now heading into the 2032 season the budget is $270 million. Very very irritating.

With all of the budget drops I have not reduced my scouting/development budgets at all. With how much the budget has decreased to this point, I may have to, though. I really don't want to as it has clearly been great for my organization, but heading into this 2023 offseason I have a negative $2.9 million in available money, so I can't even act in free agency without making some moves with currently signed players. Fortunately for me, Freeman and my RP Juenger are the only two players with expiring contracts that I don't have under arbitration control, so I will survive, but it would still be nice to have some money to spend should I need it.

What is hurting me is I did not expect my budget to decrease year after year once I started winning WS titles, so I had spent money getting Acuna to be a lifelong Brave. He's making $28 million per year. I also re-signed Strider to keep him a career Brave and he is making $24 million per year, then $22 million per year the final 2 years. When I made those deals I had a budget of $280 million that I expected to increase in future years. Instead, it's gone down by $10 million in 3 years. I also signed Gelof, Barnes, and Chronowski to long-term deals when they were younger. I still did it the Braves way and got all of them pretty cheap relative to how well they perform, but I made all of those deals under the assumption my budget would go up, not down. All that has led to money being super tight.

Again, I am fortunate that so many of my players are already signed or are so young they are incredibly cheap. There was a rule change in one of my earlier seasons that increased the amount of control teams had over players before they reached free agency or even arbitration, so I have a huge amount of my players on $720k contracts for the next few years, so by the time Acuna is old and finishing his contract up with Strider those guys will start entering arbitration, so the timing may be okay, but it's going to start getting really tough if the budget is cut each year moving forward. Realistically, I can't keep this dynasty team together if the budget goes any lower than where it is right now. I don't see how I logically could field a competent team with the deals I already have in place.

Great write up. The dynamic game worlds in this game are always interesting.

Recently started a new game and tried out just letting the manager control the lineup/rotation. It's hard to resist interfering with how they do things sometimes.

Really hoping for some expansion on the GM/Owner interactions in the future. It's a cool concept, but the current iteration is pretty pointless and doesn't really feel like it adds anything to the game. It would be nice if you had more control over what you suggest as a team goal, and it would also be nice to get more transparency in how the owners approach finances to avoid situations like you described.

I happened to check out the OOTP forums this morning and saw that there is a new beta version out there. Some people were praising the changes, but if they go through then you're really screwed. The contractual demands for some players have been adjusted, one person commented that Ohtani went from asking for $41M pre-patch to $60+ which would make his AAV about 50% higher than any current player in the league.

              Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***

Started a franchise and committed myself to letting the manager control the day to day. Well mostly, Snitker kept wanting to bench Ozzie because I had a better defender. So, I made it so I could override overall team strategy.

Really enjoying this method of play so far. Getting away from some of the daily lineup micro management that I was previously doing is a nice bonus. I can just focus on roster construction and watching the stats accumulate.

The more I play the more I'm convinced of 2 things when jumping into the games instead of simulating them.

The simulation engine does not handle the live game very well. I have noticed this in OOTP for years, but if you play every at-bat then you are guaranteed to see at least 1 passed ball that advanced a runner in every game.

There seems to be an anti player bias when with pitching. I don't understand it, but I consistently notice that my pitch can not have a clean inning. Usually this does not result in damage on the scoreboard, but it's still very annoying. I could have the most elite offense ever, and I will definitely put up runs. I'll also go through stretches of having 3,4,5,6 guys straight go down without a fight though. That is not the case when my pitcher is in (no matter how good he is or how bad the opponents are...I've tested this by forcing the other team's pitchers to fill all 9 lineup spots and they will still get 4-7 hits in a game with a walk or 2).

                Re: ***The Official OOTP Thread***

Just started up a 2024 KC Royals play through as GM only. I did a live start and simulated through the playoffs to the 2024 off-season. My goal is to build up the Royals to perennial contenders and then take a new job offer at another poor team and start the process all over again. I want to be known as the rebuild guy who gets teams out of the dumps. I'm fairly hands off with the manager but I do tell him who I want in the starting line up, as well in the starting rotation. I will not be micro managing every single game, thats too time consuming.

                2024 KC Rankings
Farm System - 28th (Only one top 100 prospect)
                Budget - 28th ($148,000,000)
                Player Payroll - 27th ($76,000,000)
My owner is very demanding and fiscally controlling.

                2024 FA Class
INF - Donavan Solano (1yr/$8mil). He will mostly be used a platoon against lefties at second and first. His versatility though gives us alot of flexibility when guys need a day off. He also is a great leader in the clubhouse and brings a good veteran presence for the younger players.
1B/DH - Carlos Santana (1yr/$5.5mil). His veteran, switch hitting bat is a perfect addition to our lineup. Right now we have left hander Vinnie Pasquantino starting at first base, so I love having a right handed bat available off the bench for him.
RP - Phil Maton (1yr/$3mil). As you can see, there's a theme here. Veteran players, one year prove it deals, and at positions where I need depth and they will play alot. Maton is a perfect piece to our bullpen, he will more than likely play a set up or closer role for us.
SP - Charlie Morton (1yr/$4.5mil). A solid middle of the rotation piece to try and solidify our rotation this year, which is arguably the weakest part of our team.
RP - Brent Suter (1yr/$1.6mil). Veteran lefty depth in the bullpen. Nothing more.
RP - Kyle Finnegan (1yr/$1.7mil). As you can tell, bullpen depth was my main concern for year one when taking over this job. This continues to help that.

                INT'L FA Signings
SP - Jesus Morales ($1.5mil/16yo/20ovr/80pot). This was a tremendous signing for a us. Just one week after being signed, he was ready for rookie ball.
                C - Baldassare Boazza ($1mil/17yo./20ovr/80pot)
                OF - David Ramirez ($1.1mil/18yo/20ovr/75pot)

                Opening Day Rotation

                9. Nate Eaton RF/R

                10 Day IL
3B Maikel Garcia - Sprained Wrist (2 days)

I do have GM firing on, so I do need to meet my owners goals. For 2024 his priority is our team record. He wants our record to, "Not suck completely." I'm thinking 70 wins is probably a reasonable goal for us.

                  2024 KC Royals Recap

                  First Half Record: 42-48
                  Second Half Record: 24-48
                  Overall Record: 66-96
As you can see, we got off to a pretty solid start, we were only 6.5 GB of the final WC spot going into the AS break. We made two moves at the deadline, moving our only all star, closer Phil Maton, as well as OF Edward Olivares. These two moves seemed to have a negative impact on the team and we went into a bit of a downward spiral after that. Another major factor was that we lost Bobby Witt Jr. for 2 months right in the middle of the season which didn't help.

As you can see it was a pretty rough year all around for us, though we did have a few bright spots. Bobby Witt Jr., MJ Melendez, Tyler Gentry and Carlos Hernandez really stud out to me. I think we do have a few good young pieces but we are still quite far away from competing for a playoff spot, especially on the pitching side of things.

I love the random stories that the game produces. This is part of a historical save of mine where I just wanted to create a stacked team of all-stars.
