      Nope

If the game makes him a coach, I will do my best to hire him.

        Ohtani First-Ballot Hall of Famer
Two-Way Star Garners 98% of Ballots

The hype of Ohtani's arrival in the USA was amazing, and there were a lot of questions and risks along the way. The Angels did what they could to maximize his value while not overworking the young potential star.

Later on, that included ending his two-way playstyle once the hitting side, and especially the defensive side, of the game took too much of a toll as he entered the twilight of his career. That said, that was at age 33 when he started becoming much less of a hitter and he moves to only pitching at 35.

In that age 35 season, he went 16-1 with a 3.05 ERA, this coming from a year prior where he also went 16-1 with a 1.57 ERA. From there, though, his body started to give out and he left baseball just two years later.

His final totals in a 15-year career:

        Pitching: 219-77, 2.98 ERA, 2,542 IP, 2,935 K, 78.7 WAR
Won 20 games three times (all in a 6-man rotation), won AL pitching triple crown from 2024-2026.

        Hitting: .295/.359/.529, 243 HR, 759 RBI, 173 OPS+, 27.3 WAR

        Awards:
        12-time All-Star
        6-time AL MVP
        8-time AL Cy Young winner
        Won Rookie of the Year
        6-time World Series winner
        1-time Playoff MVP

          2038 Angels

What ever caused the offensive explosion in the AL seems to be reverting more to normal according to BNN. While the AL is expected to have elevated run scoring, only one team, the Yankees, is expected to break 900 runs.

Another trend across baseball: the return of the stolen base. Teams have been increasingly aggressive, and BNN expects that trend to continue with about half the league having more than 100 SB. The Angels are expected to lead the way again, potentially breaking 200 SB (but not the insane nearly 300 prediction of last season).

Maeda, Masuda, and Guardado are again expected to be the engine that will power the Angels' offensive machine. All three should do it with batting average and extra bases while Maeda adds the walks.

For the first time in a while, an AL staff is expected to rival the Angels. The Mariners are expected to be in striking distance of the top ERA spot. The Angels are expected to be on top, but perhaps it's not quite as strong top-to-bottom any longer. McGlauflin looks to be the next big stud, but everyone else might not be that far above the pack.

The bullpen could be a problem, which was also the concern last season. Four-fifths of the Angels rotation is expected to be among the top pitching performers, but none of the relievers, not even the closer. Fortunately, Moulin likes giving starters as many innings as possible, and he might be inclined to remove pitch counts, given the potential weakness of the bullpen.

In all, the Angels are expected to win 98 games, enough to win the AL West by a handful of games over the Mariners. The Yankees are slated to be the top team in the AL with 101 projected wins. The AL Central? That division might not have a team eclipse 85 wins.

On the farm, the Angels have fallen to 8th with Maeda coming off the list and no other top 10 kids. The highest are a pair of 3B, Ishida and Beccara with Ishida the lone resident in the top 20. Behind those two is Luis Amarante, an outfielder that's close to being ready for the majors. Behind him are a slew of pitchers that don't project highly so far, but BNN thinks may contain a few surprises if breaks go their way.

One of those might be Yuji Nomura, a 19-year-old who recently raised his velocity to touch 102 MPH at times with his fastball and sits around 98-99 MPH consistently. He also has four developed pitches, very advanced for a teenager. The question will be command and consistency of movement on his pitches.

I've had that happen to a few players.

For me, I don't think it's forced retirement. I think they were out for like 8 months or something long like that.

                  2038 Season Report

The Angels exceed BNN's expectation, but one thing that didn't was the overall level of offense. The Angels led in runs, but no one had over 900 in the AL. One reason was the stolen base numbers for most teams, especially the leaders, were far lower than what BNN expected.

This also caused the NL to go into an offensive drought of sorts with some teams not even scoring 600 runs.

In any case, the Angels were indeed led by the trio of Masuda, Maeda, and Guardado...though the latter of those three is again raising some concerns. He drew less than 30 walks and his batting average at times nearly dipped below .300. While that's not normally a huge concern, his batting average is almost his OBP so he'll need to keep it very high to continue being considered a lock at the position.

Maeda, on the other hand, shows no lack of walks. He led the league in the category and nearly broke the .500 OBP mark. He stole 50 bases in 59 attempts and picked up 50 doubles as well.

On the power side, Nakatani came back to his usual home run totals and Hirano continues to be a consistent, if not great, contributor with the long ball. Bobby Rambo's 25 HR were solid as well, and probably about what should be expected from him.

The pitching staff was about as expected, perhaps a bit better in the bullpen. That bullpen production might have been from Moulin's extending the starters as much as possible. Hatakeyama and McGlauflin were the innings recipients of that strategy, checking in at first and second, respectively, in the AL in innings pitched.

McGlauflin also posted a no-hitter, the first of his career, this season. After teasing with multiple one-hitters, including another one this season, he was able to keep the hit column clean. The no-hitter came on the 4th of July against the Red Sox. The odd thing is that McGlauflin struck out only six hitters.

The young flamethrower wasn't quite as dominant as last season, but the Angels will take 16-6 with a 2.59 ERA and 8 WAR with no complaints. Of the 66 runs he gave up, 13 came in one start. Without that start, his ERA would have been 2.12.

In the bullpen, the back end was fine with Herrera and Vaughn doing the deeds in the late innings. The rest of the bullpen was a mixed bag. Expect Moulin to continue extending starters in the postseason, and perhaps for the foreseeable future.

                  Angels Playoff Action

Once again, the Angels had to face the rival Astros in the ALDS, and, once again, it went the full five games.

This time, the team traded wins through the first four games in what was a series of pitching duels. In the end, the Angels, behind Hirozo Maeda's 3-for-4 day, won the deciding game 4-0 to face another repeat foe, the Yankees.

It would be no sweep this time. In game three, the Angels bullpen collapsed, allowing six runs in the final two innings. The rally was capped by Juan Rosello's walk-off grand slam off Angels closer Alfredo Herrera. The home run was his second of the game.

That emotional win wasn't enough to turn the series as the Angels struck back with back-to-back nine-run games to win the series on the road.

In the World Series, the Angels faced an NL East team again, but this time it was the Braves and their 104-58 record, nearly matching the Angels' own 105-57 mark.

The two teams split the opening two games at Atlanta with the Angels suffering two major injuries to their pitching staff in the process. Mukai would be replaced in the rotation by Mavity, who would pitch game six, if necessary.

The Angels found themselves pushed to the brink after dropping the next two games at Anaheim. It took a 10th inning win to keep the series going and moving back to Atlanta for game six.

Game six is where it would end. The two teams fought to a 3-3 tie through seven innings, but the Braves scored two in the 8th to take the lead, and they would hold on in the 9th for a 5-4 win to win the World Series.

"People will point to the injury, but we won't blame anything like that. We had the chance to win it late but we couldn't get it done. Simple as that, " Moulin commented postgame.

                    First American Two-Way Player Retires
Jeff Robenson Calls it a Career

Shohei Ohtani was the first two-way player in the majors, but the first American player that played both sides was Jeff Robenson. He was drafted by the Rockies as 2024's first overall pick out of USC.

The next season, he debuted for the Rockies as a two-way player, playing primarily at first base when not on the mound. After 11 seasons with the Rockies, he signed with the Royals as a free agent, where he'd play the next three seasons before announcing his retirement.

He batted .305/.359/.549 with 283 HR and 819 RBI. His total WAR as a hitter was 34.2 in 5,057 plate appearances.

On the mound, Robenson was 121-78 with a 3.82 ERA, a 3.40 FIP and a 121 ERA+ and 75 FIP-. He accumulated 53.2 WAR on the mound in 1,941 innings, striking out 1,980 hitters along the way.

Boston Beats Angels at Their Own Game
Red Sox Snatch Latest NPB Pitcher

"We did this to show the Angels, and everyone else, that Japanese ballplayers do indeed like the other teams, " Anthony Renteria, the Red Sox GM, commented.

With the "Japanese Invasion" as strong as ever, that statement might seem a decade or so late as many a former NPB player has made success in the MLB. However, the Angels are one of the more prolific signers of Japanese players.

Shoji Matsumoto, the starting pitcher signed by the Red Sox, is considered to be a solid talent and it is expected that he will do well in our league. No one knows for sure what made him swing towards Beantown, but money is not likely to be one of the issues as Matsumoto signed for just $15 million per year in average value.

"There must have been something about the organization or the city. Perhaps he wanted to be a part of the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. What ever the case, I'm pretty sure other teams could have gone far above $15 million per year. Heck, two days earlier, the Rangers signed a pitcher for $28 million per year and the Phillies gave a 38-year-old pitcher $27 million per year, " an analyst for MLBN commented.

Granted, the Phillies signed Jaheim Shabazz, one of the most consistent and underrated pitchers in the league. Shabazz is coming off his 12th consecutive season of producing at least 5 WAR and the lowest WAR value he's produced is 4.7 in his rookie season.

But the Rangers signing, SP Oeke van der Veen from the Netherlands, looks much more dubious considering Matsumoto was available and most scouts think is a better pitcher than van der Veen.

Perhaps that explains the situation. The Red Sox and Angels may be been pretty much the only interested parties and the Angels lost the coin flip this time.

"Of course, the Angels will probably just trade for him in two or three years, " the analyst chuckled.

Service Time Until Free Agency Extended Again

A while back, MLB owners voted to extend the required service time to enter free agency to seven years, up one from the previous six.

Now, that has been extended to eight years, just one year less than the NPB's nine years requirement.

Some wonder if this is because of the said influx of Japanese players. Players from across the Pacific won't see a problem...they are used to this structure...and perhaps as more of them enter the MLBPA, owners are making small nudges more to their Asian sister leagues.

"This is interesting. I'm surprised the players went for it. Perhaps the higher overall salaries make it more palatable, " a Chicago radio host commented.

Also, the MLB owners voted to raise the DL days to 12 days minimum, up from 10.

                        Re: OOTP 19 Franchise Progress

                        2039 Angels

BNN feels the AL is catching up to the Angels, and for good reason. Even the most die hard of the Angels fans have to admit that the rotation is not as strong as in prior years where it was high-end from top to bottom. Mukai at #4 is still solid, when healthy, but his HR/9 rate has skyrocketed the last couple seasons, a serious concern. Matsui, the #5 starter, should be respectable, but not near dominant.

This puts more pressure on McGlauflin, Kahng, and Hatakeyama to stay strong, and Hatakeyama is arguably in that same "solid but not dominant" category, just with 230 innings to go with it, which has value in and of itself.

Offensively, the pressure is mounting here as well. Nakatani's departure will likely diminish an already below average home run lineup and put more pressure on the contact-and-gap hitters to do their thing consistently. Moulin's run-manufacturing skills might be tested more than ever this season.

Fortunately, he has Maeda and his insane on-base percentage, and Masuda, who brings a lot of things to the table, to head up the lineup. Guardado moves down to help bolster the middle third of the lineup. Moulin will also have Luis Amarante to utilize. The young outfielder has great skills on the bases.

Also working in the Angels' favor is that whatever the offensive explosion the past couple season in the AL was has reverted back to more normal tendencies, if BNN's expectation are close to reality. This will make the Angels offense more effective, by comparison, and help the Angels staff carry the load more easily.

Luis Amarante is the new face to the lineup. At the plate, he's straight average down the page. Nothing extraordinary, nothing stand out, but no weaknesses either. When he gets on base and when he takes the field is where he will be exceptional.

The bullpen also has a new face in the person of Luis Mijares. His live arm will be counted on to improve a bullpen that must be better than last season, especially if the lower offensive environment proves true. The Angels figure to be in a lot of close games, and they can not afford to lose leads, or games, late.

On the farm, 3B Ishida will move up to AA in his first taste of the high minors. Some wonder if his poor contact ability will get exposed and what adjustment he'd make as a result.

SP Ismael Solorio and his 97 MPH fastball will try life at the AAA level to start the season. He, too, might see his weakness exposed, in this case his inability to get movement on his pitches. Scouts think he could improve his command, and that might help him avoid barrels more often.

SP Orazio Diiasio is interesting in that he's already been exposed at the AA level and now he's been elevated to AAA. This seems strange, but scouts think the struggles at the AA level have promoted adjustments and they want to see if that's borne out in Orazio's AAA results.

Then there's 3B Beccara. He's had an easy time of things from the R to AA levels, though his stats dipped for the first time in AA. Now he will arrive at AAA and some wonder if his laid back style and lack of instincts will start to hold him back.

"I don't know if he takes this seriously or wants to push as much as he could. He's okay on the field and during mandated, structured team activities, but he's not a guy that will do much work outside those times. Maybe now it will burn him and he'll change up...or we can just forget about him, " a team scout commented.

Overall, the Angels' farm comes in 7th overall with Ishida the lone Angel prospect in the top 20 (19th).

Just picked this game up with the WS special that was going on, played it for a brief time previously I believe was OOTP 16. Anyway I'm diving in head first as I know have much more time and patients to give a game like this a good go.

With that said I have started a new franchise with the Marlins, so let the rebuild begin. Completed our first series with the Cubs to start the season out. Able to win 1 of the 3 games in the set at home so not too bad, next up the Boston Redsox. A tough schedule to start for what should be a long year with a lot of losing.

                            Re: September 1 2019 Update

Dang, it's been over a month since my last update and I've since finished the 2019 regular season...

The Carolina Knights posted a 99-63 record and flat out ran away with the NL East by 11 games. The 2nd year expansion club has earned home field advantage in the NLDS versus the 96-66 LA Dodgers. The 106-56 Cubs await the Wild Card game winner; the D'Backs and Mets will need to play #163 first to decide which team visits the 96-66 Cardinals in the 1-game winner-take-all.

The AL side of the bracket features a trio of 100-win teams: the AL East champion 102-60 Yankees, the AL West champion 103-59 Astros, and the AL East runner-up 100-62 Boston Red Sox. The Astros will host the 90-72 Cleveland Indians, champions of the AL Central, in the ALDS. The 93-69 LA Angels powered by Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani will take on the Red Sox at Fenway Park for the right to face the Yankees.

NYY's Giancarlo Stanton just missed tying Barry Bonds' single season HR mark. Stanton swatted 72 HR, drove in 156 RBI, and finished 2nd in the AL with 9.7 WAR. The Bombers blasted a record 346 homers as a team, with Josh Donaldson chipping in 50, Aaron Judge with 31, Gregory Bird with 31, Gary Sanchez with 29, Clint Frazier with 24, Gleyber Torres with 23, and Khris Davis with 22.

Even with all those dingers, the Yanks were outscored by the deep and balanced Houston Astros. The 'Stros scored a ridiculous 1013 runs in 2019, and got major contributions up and down the lineup. Free agent pick-up Bryce Harper didn't disappoint deep in the heart of Texas [.329, 54 HR, 134 RBI] as he paced the Junior Circuit with 10.1 WAR. Their "other" free agent pick-up Paul Goldschmidt rebounded from a disastrous 2018 in a big way [.275, 40 HR, 113 RBI]. Jose Altuve [.324, 13 HR, 76 RBI], Kyle Tucker [.276, 31 HR, 93 RBI], Carlos Correa [.283, 28 HR, 112 RBI], Derek Fisher [.253, 32 HR, 110 RBI], and George Springer [.270, 36 HR, 121 RBI] rounded out a lineup that had bat for days.

As for the Knights, they cruised down the homestretch, but are a little unsettled heading to the postseason. Injuries to starters Marco Gonzales [7-5, 3.67 ERA] and Chris Bassitt [12-5, 3.57 ERA], relievers Trevor Rosenthal [0-1, 2.70 ERA] and Joe Jimenez [8-1, 1.46 ERA, 27 HLD, 9 SV], and rookie starting second baseman Thairo Estrada [.303, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 2.1 WAR] contribute to a cloudy outlook. Some tough decisions need to be made as far as who makes the playoff roster.

Is anyone using any specific settings that ARENT default? Just wondering if default really is the way to go for realism, or if someone has found any adjustment that works better.

Carolina Advances to NLCS; Knights to Host Cardinals

The Knights and Dodgers took it to the limit in the NLDS like an Eagles song, and Carolina emerged with a 3-2 series win. Carolina CF Kevin Pillar was awarded the NLDS MVP with his .429 batting average and plethora of doubles, but James Paxton was probably the better choice.

                                Game 1: CAR 12, LAD 1
The Knights jumped all over Walker Buehler. Buehler gave up 6 runs in 2 IP and threw only 35 of 72 pitches for strikes. The Knights amassed 17 hits and 7 bases on balls. Lead-off man Kevin Pillar tied an NL playoff record with 3 doubles--he also chipped in 5 RBI. Every Carolina position player recorded at least one base hit, with Michael Brantley, Jose Abreu, Max Schrock, and pitcher James Paxton having multi-hit games. Paxton also went the distance with a very economical 87 pitches. The Big Maple struck out 9 and walked 1.

                                Game 2: LAD 5, CAR 4 (10 innings)
Mike Clevinger didn't dominate for the Knights like Paxton did in the previous game. Clevinger lasted 4.2 IP while allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and 1 BB. The Dodgers struck early with back-to-back 1st inning RBI doubles by Cody Bellinger and Alex Verdugo. Yangervis Solarte evened the score with a 1st inning 2-run homer off of Julio Urias. Solarte would drive in all 4 of Carolina's runs. The game went to the 10th inning tied 4-4 and Justin Turner homered off of Zach Britton to provide the tiebreaker. Carolina can point to loading the bases with nobody out in the 7th inning and only scoring 1 run as why they were put in position to lose.

                                Game 3: LAD 7, CAR 6 (11 innings)
Pivotal game 3 was a topsy turvy affair as the series shifted to Dodgers Stadium. Yangervis Solarte knocked in Kevin Pillar who doubled to lead off the game. Joc Pederson greeted Carolina starter Tyler Mahle with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the first. Carolina scored again in the 2nd inning on Sandy Leon's solo homer. The Dodgers would soon take the upper hand as they continued to work over Tyler Mahle. Pederson homered again in the 4th inning to make it a 3-2 Dodgers lead. Lefty reliever Aaron Bummer was greeted by a Cody Bellinger solo homer in the 5th and also allowed a run to score on a passed ball after a Yasiel Puig double. Carolina would score the next 4 runs using a bit of small ball and a 2-run Kevin Pillar homer off of Kenley Jansen in the 8th. With a slim 6-5 lead, the Carolina bullpen once again came up a little short. Justin Wilson walked Joc Pederson to lead off, then Joe Jimenez got Justin Turner to ground into a fielder's choice. But, Zach Britton coughed up the lead surrendering back-to-back singles to Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger. The game went to extras and Alex Meyer pitched 2 IP of quality relief before running into a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the 11th. Andrew Toles walked it off for LA with a sac fly against Phil Klein.

                                Game 4: CAR 7, LAD 0
With elimination in the air and champagne chilling in the home team's locker room at Dodgers Stadium, James Paxton came up big for the Knights. The Big Maple fired 6 innings of no-hit ball before giving up a 7th inning single and giving way to the bullpen. Carolina played long ball against LA starter Trevor Cahill and friends. Carolina catcher Chris Herrmann smacked a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning after getting his first start of the series. Michael Brantley and Jose Abreu delivered back-to-back jacks in the 4th to put the game out of reach.

                                Game 5: CAR 6, LAD 4
It was a party atmosphere early as the Knights smacked around Walker Buehler for a second consecutive start. Carolina would take an early 6-0 lead. Jose Iglesias got them on the board with a 2-run HR in the 2nd inning. Jose Abreu went deep with a 3-run blast in the 3rd inning. Kevin Pillar drove in Chris Herrmann with a 4th inning sac fly. Then, Mike Clevinger started to lose his edge and the Dodgers closed the gap with a 4-run 5th inning. Yasiel Puig led off with a single and Keibert Ruiz doubled him home. Chris Taylor singled to drive Clevinger from the game. With 1st and 3rd and lefty Aaron Bummer on the bump, the Dodgers put runners in motion to force a Chris Herrmann throwing error, which allowed Ruiz to score from 3rd base. Taylor subsequently scored on a wild pitch and Andrew Toles walked to continue the onslaught. Bummer rallied to strike out Joc Pederson and retire Justin Turner before walking both Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger. Bummer was removed with extreme prejudice and Joe Jimenez gave up an RBI single to pinch hitter Jed Lowrie. Luckily for Carolina, Kevin Pillar gunned down Corey Seager at the plate to maintain a 2-run lead. Fortunately the Dodgers never threatened again and the Knights were able to celebrate at home.
