My All Star Baseball 2005 Manage Only Mode Franchise/Case Study

We manage only fans get the short end of the stick. We are a dying breed. We have to resort to playing games that are years old because of very few newer options. In my case, I have always played La Russa baseball for Sega Genesis. I have probably completed 5 whole seasons on it and parts of many others. Well like many others I was always hoping for a new console game that had an in game manage only mode worth playing. After being disappointed again this year (I do not have a PS2 - so couldn't try The Show) I started to search forums looking for anything. I found ASB 2005 and bought a copy (xbox). I have read about every topic on this forum regarding ASB MO mode. I am making this thread as a resource for future manage only players to save time and not give up on this game after a short trial - because it is a pretty good MO game after a few tweaks are made. I will start by listing some results from my first season. I played this as an expansion franchise playing in the stadium "The Mac":

I played about 70 games and was about 5-10 games under .500 in the NL Central. Here is what I learned:

There are bugs - many of which have been detailed on this forum many times over.

OF arms are too strong resulting in singles off the wall, baserunners not advancing when they should on base hits and sac flies.

There are very few walks. VERY few.

There are way too many K's, not enough runs, not nearly enough home runs. I was leading the league in ERA and was dead last by a wide margin in both runs scored and home runs allowed. I was deep enough into the season to know it was not a short term streak. I was tempted to give up on the game until one day I decided to mess with the settings. To my amazement, the settings for pitch speed and swing type both had a huge impact on the game for both teams. I had played so far using the default settings of sim (fastest) pitch and Timing batting. I played a few weeks using slow pitching and I was seeing a big jump in the number of runs scored per game so I decided to sim the rest of the season and start fresh.

I decided that I would play in the Acclaim Sports Park as it's bio said it was prone to high scoring games. I played on the following settings:
    Pitch type: Rookie (Slow)
    Swing Type: Zone
I also turned the batter aid on and the pitching aid off though I am not sure at all if they have any impact. After 35 games here were my results:

My hitting stats: Avg: .283 Runs: 117 HR: 13 Slg: .422 OBP: .289 BB: 7 (not counting intentional walks) SO: 185

My Pitching stats: ERA: 3.67 Runs: 128 HR: 12 BB: 31 (does inclduide IBB) SO: 106 WHIP: 1.40

I was getting better results but it still wasn't good enough. Still not nearly enough HR's and way too many doubles and triples in my home ball park which has a very deep CF wall. I realized that I needed a stadium with shorter walls to up the homers and reduce the extra base hits. So I started messing around with the settings again and tried the 3D Cursor swing type rather than Zone and immediately I noticed more home runs being hit. I continually tweaked the settings and came to the conclusion that Slow Pitch and 3D along with a smaller ball park would be my best bet. The following post contains my results with these settings:

Re: My All Star Baseball 2005 Manage Only Mode Franchise/Case Study

I started a brand new expansion franchise in Puerto Rico called the Outlaws. I chose to play in Kydd Memorial which has short dimensions and an awesome ocean view. By the way, which city you choose has a big effect on the amount of money your "salary cap" will be set at. Generally the bigger the city, the bigger the salary but it does vary. Your stadium also has a big impact. I have played 31 games of this season so far.

    Pitch Speed: Rookie (Slow)
    Swing Type: 3D Cursor
    Hitting Aid: On
Pitching Aid: Off (Again, not sure if these aids have any impact)

Hitting stats: Avg: .292 Runs: 118 Doubles: 77 HR: 21 Slg: 433 OBP: 296 BB: 2 (not including IBB) SO: 171

Pitching stats: ERA: 2.63 Runs: 87 Doubles: 51 HR: 19 BB: 22 (includes IBB) SO: 91 WHIP: 1.16

My record is 18-13 which makes this the deepest into a season I have been over .500. My offensive numbers are up especially my home runs. My pitching staff leads the league in ERA which is a surprise. I fully expect my ERA numbers to go up as I have played 70% of my games away from my hitter friendly home park so far.

My batting average is up but my walks are still non existant which makes me last in OBP. But my OBP+Slg is a very realistic number as it is right in the middle of the NL, as are my runs scored. So it makes for a nice balance. Here is my lineup so you get an idea of the quality of my team in comparison to the stats:

    1. Alex Sanchez
    2. Alfredo Amezaga
    3. Mark Texiera
    4. Pat Burrell
    5. Russ Branyan
    6. Miguel Cabrera
    7. Craig Wilson
    8. Kaz Matsui

    SP:
    1. Sidney Ponson
    2. Ramon Ortiz
    3. Ben Howard
    4. Ryan Dempster
    5. Luis Martinez

    RP:
    Scott Linebrink - CL
    Rocky Biddle
    Chad Bradford
    Scott Sauerbeck
    Tom Vance
    Fernando Rodney
    TJ Tucker

Just a few other points of emphasis:

I do set some ground rules for myself as to not take advantage of AI bugs. I allow myself only one succesful drag bunt per game. If you drag bunt with a speedy hitter than can bunt well (Alex Sanchez), you get a single probably 75% of the time. I also allow myself only one successful squeeze play per game. The non suicide squeeze is successful nearly every time you try it. The other ground rule I have is that I only do trading through the trading block via one for one trades. The AI can be had very easily by trading 2 of your guys (average players) for one of theirs (superstar). Not cool.

That's about it for now. Please post your feedback and your results/findings/thoughts about the game. It really is a cool game and by far the best manage mode modern console game that I have played. I plan on playing the entire season on the current settings as I like the results and feel of the game so far. I will continually update my season results and post any other findings that I come across.

    Manage on!!!

Very interesting post. ASB 05 is my fav baseball game of all time because I love Manage Mode and the franchise mode is what I am all about. I love the challenge of being a GM and having to think in terms of waivers, rule 5, arbitration etc. Now, to your post. I too saw the same thing when I started my season. I don't have a problem with BB's because I use the random count generator (I have had games where I walk 8-10 times, usually average around 4-5). My problem was the HR's and runs scored. I was seeing a lot of low scoring games (1-0, 2-1, etc). Well, I tweaked the settings and moved the hitting time to 3-D cursor and it almost completely eliminated the swinging K's where the batter swings at a pitch completely out of the zone. I also saw a lot more HR's and runs scored. I am in September of my season and am in the middle of the pack in ERA, whip, RS, and HR. I am going to try your suggestion of lowering the pitch speed and see if that boosts offense because it could still use a boost. My leading HR hitter only has 21 in September.

          Great posts guys.....
I too used the random count...and although you still see alot of K's...you see walks!!!

I found my old copy of ASB2004. That game was excellent in terms of manage only mode pitching and batting. Much better stats!...but ASB2005 had so many more options..

Traded for him. There are a lot of borderline stars available in the expansion draft. Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Paul Konerko, Freddy Garcia, Javy Vazquez, Pat Burrell, Ray Durham, etc. Not a truly realistic expansion draft but my team is still not a powerhouse by any means. Tried to acquire more offense to help boost the offensive stats. Cabrera is only rated as a B- (he's closer to a C+ than a B) in this game. I don't have any players above B- on my team. Cabrera has actually been adisappointment so far. He is hitting around .270 with no homers. I believe I traded Javier Vazquez for him.

Re: My All Star Baseball 2005 Manage Only Mode Franchise/Case Study

I have thought about using some form of the generated pitch count to help draw walks but it I don't mind it as long as the OBP + SLG numbers are good which they are.

The pitch speed definitely has an effect. That was the first and only thing I changed at first and I saw the difference right away. I started a season with the medium setting and after 25 games I had like 5 homers. Switched it to Slow and they went right up.

The park you play in makes a difference. The fences at Kydd are way shorter than say Acclaim. I just played a series at home (Kydd) vs the Rockies and my pitchers got rocked 2 of the 3 games. Lost 11-4 and 11-8 before winning 5-2. Their lineup is stacked and Helton is just about impossible to get out. They also stagger their lefties and righties in their lineup so it is tough to match up with their lefties late in the game.

Through 33 games I am now 19-14. Leading the NL East by 1 game over the Phils

Offense has scored 133 runs for an avg of 4.03 per game
Hit 25 homers for an avg of .75 per game
Pitching has allowed 100 runs for an avg of 3.03 per game
Allowed 22 homers for an avg of .66 per game

Have a pretty long homestand coming up which will up the homer numbers even further. Burrell currently leads my team with 7

Another thing that I forgot to mention was the Contact vs Power at the plate. I still don't have a good grasp on which one is better to use in certain situations. But as I have gone on, it seems that using power results in better overall hitting. For most batters I will use power until there are two strikes and then I will use contact. Same batters that have no power would struggle when I used contact. When I used power, they tore it up. Alex Sanchez is an example - since I switched to him using power he is been a beast. It could be a short term thing but the same seems to be happening with Kaz Matsui. Then again there have been plenty of times where guys have homered on 2 strike counts using contact. What have your experiences been with contact/power?

I am actually torn on that. It seems sometimes that when I use power guys hit better, and then other times like it just ups my k's. What I have ended up doing is using Power for my hitters with good power ratings when they are in a hitters count, and then contact with 2 strikes. I actually see more HR's off the contact swing I think.

I too seem to be seeing quite a few homers off of the contact swing but see more hits in general with the power swing. But the hitters seem to be more selective and take more pitches early in the count with contact. Hard to get a good feel for it

                      Update

I have now completed 45 games and am currently 28-17 - 1.5 games up on the 2nd place Phillies. By far the most success I have had in a season so far. Phils come to town for a 4 game series next. My team is 19-6 since starting the season 9-11. Though we took a blow when Pat Burrell broke his knee cap diving for a ball and will be out till mid august. He was leading the team in HRs and RBIs at the time of his injury and batted clean up every night. Could be a big loss. I am still leading the league in batting avg by a slim margin (.291) and have fallen to 2nd in ERA (right around 3.00). Also middle of the pack in home runs hit and runs scored. Thought I would post my stats of each player along with a few notes.

                      Hitters - Avg - HR - RBI
                      Andres Galleraga - 500 - 0 - 1
Signed as a free agent just a few games ago

                      Alex Sanchez - 424 - 0 - 16
Alex has absolutely been on fire. Leads the NL in average and doubles, is 2nd in runs scored, and is 5th in NL MVP voting. A lot of his avg comes from the near daily drag bunt. Remember I limit myself to one succesful drag bunt per game. If I did a drag bunt with Sanchez every at bat, he would hit 700-800 no doubt. Has a ton of speed and range in center but has a terrible arm.

                      Alfredo Amzaga - 381 - 3 - 18
Platoons at 2nd base with Ryan Freel. Amezaga destroys right handed pitching (terrible vs lefties) and has been an outstanding #2 hitter all year. He and Sanchez at the top of my lineup have been as good as it gets.

                      Ryan Freel - 349 - 2 - 18
Only plays vs lefties and wears them out. Very valuable bench player as he can play every position outside of catcher. Good speed and defense. Hits 2nd in the order vs lefties.

                      Russ Branyan - 321 - 9 - 29
Has been a very pleasent surprise. Now leads the team in RBI and HR. Versatile defender. Only plays vs RHP but will see more action vs LHP with the injury to Burrell.

                      Miguel Cabrera - 315 - 3 - 16
Has really turned it on as of late. I have moved him up to 3rd in the batting order with the injury to Burrell. Excellent right fielder with a cannon for an arm. Also plays some 3rd base. Kills LHP

                      Yorvit Torrealba - 310 - 1 - 6
Has been a very solid backup catcher. Always starts vs lefties (Wilson starts at 1B vs LHP). Fair amount of doubles and has a strong arm.

                      Mark Teixeira - 287 - 4 - 18
Seems to be coming out of a slump that dropped his avg to 260. Has really struggled defensively at 3B where has made quite a few errors and routinely makes high throws. Do not want to stick him in the outfield due to his D- speed rating (same as Branyan at 1B).

                      Pat Burrell - 272 - 7 - 28
Injured while diving for a ball, will be out for 3 months. Seems to be more clutch than good - has come up with some big homers/rbi. His defense is pretty bad in left but he does have a strong arm. Will miss his offense for sure

                      Ben Broussard - 271 - 1 - 8
Originally was starting and hitting 3rd but quickly was surpassed in the lineup by Branyan. Will be the guy most benefiting from the Burrell injury as he will be my LF vs righties. Was nice having his bat come off the bench.

                      Kaz Matsui - 264 - 2 - 12
Currently on the 15 day DL. Plays good/great defense and gets an occassional hit. Not a bad SS/8th hitter. Leading candidate for NL rookie of the year.

                      Craig Wilson - 257 - 5 - 16
Slumping as of late (on the not hot list on the game). 3rd on the team in homers - above average offensive catcher.

                      Terrence Long - 220 - 0 - 2
Hasnt produced much offense in his limited work. Occassionaly use him as a defensive replacement in left for his speed and range. Weak arm

                      Ramon Santiago - 182 - 0 - 0
Backup middle infielder has been starting in place of Matsui and has done nothing. Most likely to be sent down when Matsui returns.

                      Jeffrey Hammonds - 000 - 0 - 0
Free agent pickup when Burrell went down. Will start in left vs LHP but is 0 for 8 so far. Has a lot of trouble running down fly balls for some reason. His speed and range arent that bad. May have to find another option.

                      Pitchers - W/L - ERA - Appearances
                      Sidney Ponson - 5-2 - 3.42 - 9
Started out red hot but has cooled off. Among the NL candidates for the Cy - has 3 complete games.

                      Ramon Ortiz - 2-1 - 2.68 - 9
Has been saddled with a lack of run support.

                      Ben Howard - 2-3 - 4.08 - 9
Shelled in his last outing in Atlanta. Among the candidates for NL rookie of the year.

                      Ryan Dempster - 4-3 - 2.87 - 9
                      Has been better than expected.

                      Luis Martinez - 4-2 - 2.12 - 9
Something about this guy makes him better than his C rating. He was outstanding for me in another franchise I had going. Could make a run at the Cy if he can get some more wins.

                      Scott Linebrink - 1-0 - 1.45 - 19
Leads the NL with 15 saves. Could not ask for more. Has an awesome splitter than gets a lot of ground balls.

                      TJ Tucker - 2-0 - 4.12 - 12
Long reliever that has done a decent job.

                      Chad Bradford - 5-1 - 1.00 - 20
Devestating vs righties. Somehow has 5 wins out of the pen. Has been my best middle reliever.

                      Rocky Biddle - 1-3 - 4.41 - 15
Was slated to be my main 8th inning guy but has struggled. Looks great at times then will turn around and blow a lead, especially of late.

                      Scott Sauerbeck - 2-0 - 2.84 - 20
Has taken over as my main setup guy along with Bradford. Has done a good job vs righties and is lights out vs lefties.

                      Fernando Rodney - 0-0 - 0.00 - 5
So far so good for this recent call up.

                      Mark Guthrie - 0-0 - 0.00 - 3
Finally healthy after a lengthy injury. Lefty specialist replaces Shane Nance

                      Shane Nance - 0-0 - 4.32 - 8
Demoted to make room for Guthrie

Just a quick update on how my season ended up...

First off, I took your advice and messed with the settings. The game plays SO much better with the pitch speed on slow. I also made another discovery my accident. The game plays better using the fielder cam. I'll post more on that later on.

Anyway, I have been playing through a Manage Mode only 2004 season with Atlanta. The season was a real challenge and very similar to how most Braves seasons go. I started out sputtering and was around .500 in when June rolled around. That is when I took off and put together a good June and July to get into 1st place. Through August and September the Mets and I switched on and off leading the East. Finally, with 6 games left, 3 against the Mets at home, and 3 at Chicago, I was down by a game.

I had lost my 1B (Travis Lee, he had a solid year for me) to a pulled hamstring, so I was amazed when my boys showed up for the series against the Mets. We swept them 7-5, 7-3, and 2-1 (11 innings). Going into Chicago I had a two game lead and was feeling pretty confident about winning the Braves 13th straight NL East Pennant. Then I ran into the Cubs.

The Cubs were battling St. Louis for the Central title. I faced Kerry Wood in game 1 and he was dominant, striking out 11 through 8 innings while giving up only 3 hits. Cubs 4, Braves 0. However, the Mets lost to the Expos, so I was still up by a game! Next game featured Russ Ortiz (Atl) against Greg Maddux (Chi). The Braves roughed up Maddux and led 5-1 in the 5th when all hell broke loose. The Cubs put up an 8 spot on Ortiz and the pen and ended up winning 12-7. Again, however, the Mets lost to the Expos. The big blow in this game was Marcus Giles broke his hand turning a double play and was done for the year.

I went into the final game knowing I only needed a win to secure the Pennant. This game featured Horacio Ramirez (Atl) vs. Matt Clement (Chi). Clement is a Cy Young canidate with a 17-7 record and 2.41 ERA. The Braves struck first going up 1-0 in the 1st. It wasn't too last. The Cubs put a couple of big innings together to win 10-4. This time, the Mets won. There would be a one game playoff in Shea to determine the NL East Champ.

The game featured the Braves best starter throughout the year, Orlando Hernadez, against Steve Traschel. The Braves held the lead 1-0 in after 1 when Chipper got a two out single to bring in Furcal from 2nd. The Mets evened it up in the 5th. And then I became Grady Little. I had noticed at the end of the 6th that Hernandez was not locating well, but I decided to let him go out for the 7th. He ended up walking a few guys and giving up a crucial two out hit that brought in 2 runs. Mets would hold that 3-1 lead for
the rest of the game and end Atlanta's string of 13 straight NL East crowns.

I'll be posting a complete recap of my season in the dynasty section with stats, standings, etc if anyone is interested. It's back to the drawing board in the offseason to try and reclaim the Pennant. Sorry for the long post, but I really got into it. Man, I love this game...

Wow now that is what it is all about.. So much fun having a challenge rather than walking to the playoffs with 120 wins. Sounds like a very fun season. I woul dbe very interested in checking out your stats. Where is this franchise section that you speak of? I would also be interested in hearing your thought on the fielding cam and the slow pitch vs fast pitch. I have suspected that there may be a difference in gameplay depending on the camera angle that you use. I know the pitch speed makes a difference. Ive been playing my expansion franchise pretty steady and my team is still doing quite well. I will have to post an update before the all star break.

I'm not going to attempt to be a jerk... but there is a wonderful game on PC perhaps you would like to try. It's called Out Of The Park Baseball and it's completely about being a manager/owner of a baseball team. You can get packs that everything is MLB related, or you can build your own baseball world.

It's pretty sweet... and perhaps you guys would like it.
