Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
I recently read an article in SI about Bobby Valentine, and his experiences in Japan. This got me wondering about this game and how it portrays the Japanese baseball experience. The offensive style in Japanese is about being conservative and safe, very fundamentally based, as I see it. A lot of bunting, slap hitting, and little or no stealing; is the game designed for this style? The atmosphere: do you hear the beating drums, the chants, the festive atmosphere?
I don't have a PS3 but of course want one (currently have a 360 that is gathering dust). I admire all of you that are discussing this game on this strand, I bet you are having a blast.
Japanese baseball has always intrigued me even though here in the U.S., Japanese baseball is considered 4 A (term from the SI article). Japanese baseball has to be considered a legititmate system, look at the talent that is coming to America, and who won the WBC.Comment

Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
tomba, I have always played imported baseball games, from the days of greatest nine baseball for genesis, and saturn, the very first pro yakyuu and netsu stadiums, now I am just waiting to get my copy of this version. Its a shame that american companies can't learn from these imports on how to make a really good game. the only us company I feel has made the right descisions as to how to make a good baseball game has been 989 sports with mlb 07. But imports to me are always the way to go to get the best baseball experience.Comment

Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
Hadn't played this (like a week or so?) and fired it up after i was playing MLB 2k7. Noticed right away that the animation in the game is much more life like. I'm hoping this weeks the show for Ps3 can be as good in this department...Brand New Tomba Slider sets ready for Next Gen Versions of NBA,Madden and Fifa Stay Tuned...Comment

I agree..just wish 2k can learn from Konami...It would be cool of Konami took the same engine they are using for Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4 and import to the US and make a MLB game here for usPSN: ckarlic

Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
Well, hmmm.
ALL of them are playable, all of them have different looks and feel and all of them are worth the money.
I paid 40 for MLB 2k7
I paid 75 for PYS4
I paid 20 for MLB 07 (after trade in credit)
Honestly to say which one is better is tough.
The pitching system goes to MLB 2k7,yet PYS4's animations and execution is a notch better.
The hitting system is great and believable on MLB 07,but more exact on PYS4.
The graphics are very believable on MLB 2k7, yet PYS4 does a great job of conveying the atmosphere and recreating the visual look of japanese baseball while MLB 07 the show is far better than any screenshots or vid i have seen of the game prior to it's release along with the fact that MLB 07 has amazing framerates(the other games have tricks you need to do but they are minor to get the framerates going good)
All in all and you probably want a clear cut answer.
If you wanna play JUST baseball exhibition games in any kind of stadium and weather get MLB 2k7. if you wanna play some really thinking mans baseball get PYS4 and if you a little bit of both get MLB 07.
BUT ALL of them are worth the money and are the reason why PS3 has won in my book this spring...Brand New Tomba Slider sets ready for Next Gen Versions of NBA,Madden and Fifa Stay Tuned...Comment

Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
For that, I give it a tie with 2K7, which with the right sliders plays a decent game of ball and is very pretty to look at. If Spirits had an English component, I'd probably like it better. As of now, it is my "off" baseball game---whenever I need a change of pace.

Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
Hey guys, are you still playing this game? Just got my ps3 and ordered this game. Reading what everyone said convinced me. Should be in the mail today or tomorrow. I've printed out the translation from Japensebaseball.com and am pumped to play but now there's not much activity on this thread. Are you guys busy with The Show right now? I've been playing it too but am looking forward to this game. Tomba, Jim416, Farve4vr.......anyone?Originally posted by ImTellinTimIf I lived in Waco, I would find you and kick you right in the nuts.Comment

Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
Anyone still playing this game? Or is MLB The Show taking up most of your time? I just got my PS3 two days ago and was looking at the impressions in this thread. PSY4 looks really tight. I found it at a local mom and pop video store in my area and was thinking of picking this up. Anymore impressions you guys could offer? Thanks.

Re: Update on Pro Yakyuu Spirits 4
Looks like just you and me on this board, at least for now LHT. I've had this game a few days now and I'll share some quick impressions.
I printed out the translation that can be found on Japanesebaseball.com. It was helpful. The main menus are in both English and Japanese. Once you click on one of the main menu choices it goes to all japanese so the translation guide is a must.
I messed around with the settings and went through the tutorial. This is also a must plus you get points for completing the individual assignments and you can spend the points in the VC shop, buy uniforms, extra stadiums, etc.
Played several exhibition games while messing with the settings. Finally settled on the CPU being "medium" difficulty with the pitch speed as slow. I never have cared for the cursor hitting system however it appears to have been really well done in this game. The cursor is shaped like a bat or it can also be round. You can have a regualr size cursor or a large one. I found the zone hitting in this game to be too easy, even on "fast" pithcing. I settled on the normal bat cursor and even with these settings I am for the most part getting my rear handed to me.
Pitch selection is done with the left stick while the right stick can be utilized to put a little more zip on your fastball. There's all the basic pitches and not all pitchers hav the same pitches. Timing is crucial when pitching. It's not a meter system but is set up like one. You basically have a cursor where you want the pitch to go then you press X to start your wind up. A blue circle then shows up and you have to press X again at the time the blue circle closes on the ball. If you miss or don't time it right you can get rocked. You can actually get rocked anyway but you are more likely to do so if you mess up the timing.
Hitting is fun. The strike zone shows up with hot and cold zones before each pitch, not sure if this can be changed as the translation did not tell about everything. Press X for what I would say would be a regular swing or O for a slap the ball swing. I don't strike out much, as I said I have the pitch speed as slow. Making contact is not the problem but I seem to pop up or ground out a lot. Guess I am not getting the main part of the cursor lined up with the ball. I have hit like three homers in 12 or so games. Doubles are as they should be. I have yet to hit a triple but I've noticed that some of these Japanese ballparks appear to be smaller than our major leagues so that might be part of it. I have seen errors in the field on both sides. Animations are very good and the graphics are on par with 2K7 with the exception of the fields, grass, dirt, etc.
A couple of things that bother me about the game.
1. The fielding view when I am batting and the ball gets hit. It seems like the view is always like from the first base line between home and first. There may be a way to change this but I can't seem to find it.
2. Hit variety seems to be lacking a bit. I make a lot of outs popping up to the 2nd baseman, as well as others, who stands in the same spot to catch the ball too many times for my taste. This may be my issue though as I may be just a bit off, although consistent, on my bat cursor placement on the ball.
Having said that, I do really like this game. I have 2K7 and The Show as well. If I had to pick one to play it would be The Show. This game though is fun for a change of pace and I do like the challenge. Did I mention that I have won 2 out of 12 games? I am using the Giants as I beleive they are supposed to be pretty good.
Anyway I hope that helps.Originally posted by ImTellinTimIf I lived in Waco, I would find you and kick you right in the nuts.Comment
