MLB The Show vs MLB 2K
I have grown so tired of the endless comparisons, when it comes to these two franchises. It's the same argument/opinion/perspective in every debate. The Show has better graphics, The Show looks real, on and on...And not to side with one or the other, but I am not as impressed with the Show as most of the gaming fans seem to be. I began playing the show in 04-05 and yes, it has come a long way graphically. Something that can't be said about it's Engine. I see the same presentation, just as I mentioned before graphically improved. Same overlays, same cut-scene animations (Pre/Post at bat), same awkward warm up swing animation in-between pitches (when batter doesn't leave the box), same awful commentary, and I mean down to the topics discussed, this is ridiculous. Do to the fact everyone seems to be blind to the fundamental flaws within the game. Flaws such as the throwing motions (at times I ask myself who throws the baseball like this?). It doesn't seem you're really generating power on top of the horrid motion itself. As long as the blind following continues because the graphics remind you of real baseball or they add things like a balk or fake-throw. Sony will continue to push out the same engine with graphic improvements, similar to Madden NFL. I understand this is not the popular perspective in regards to this game, but AI don't care. 2K and Sony seem to have two completely different approaches when it comes to in-game graphics. Sony seems to be pushing for reality in the virtual world, while 2K aims at virtual reality. I've seen a number of post eluding to 2K needed to give it's baseball game the same treatment it gives it's basketball game. And I must say graphically it does. The graphics in NBA 2K11 closer resemble those of MLB 2K11. Yet it's held in the same light as MLB The Show. Yes I understand The Show offers a good depiction (visually) of what baseball is. Yet I believe 2K is working toward bringing the user the true feeling of being in the MLB. Just look at the pitch/hit/new fielding systems. There was a point in time where EA had a basketball/football game easy on the eye. Gave you the impression you were seeing real life in a video game. Meanwhile there was this company, not that easy on the eye graphically, pushing the envelope in terms of authenticity in game play simulation. The moment glitz and glamor stop holding the consumers attention, this company stole the show. Me personally, I am a huge fan of visual simulation in addition to game play authenticity in simulation titles. However when I play a game I want to feel as though I am on the field again making the decisions. To ensure victory or cause defeat. Yes, I know 2K is still not quite where they as a company would like to be, in terms of simulating the sport of baseball. Still lacking some of the minor fundamentals, but given their track record I don't see them stopping until the sports simulation standard is reached. I personally in playing the MLB 2K11 demo can see a bigger potential in the titles speed of growth, given they are closer to mastered the elements, with the hitting/fielding/pitching, that gives the user the feeling he/she is a part of what's going on. Graphically they will continue to grow yes. In the meantime I think they will continue to build on the fundamental, both they themselves and their competitor lacks. We just have to wait and see!!!Last edited by elimack; 03-03-2011, 07:00 AM. -

Second off, does A.I. mean anything to you?
Third off, 'given there track record you dont see them stopping'? Do you mean the track record of NBA 2k or do you mean the track record of NHL 2k? -

Haha...
You've grown so tired of the endless comparisons....that you've started yet another one!!!
Priceless.
Blind leading....on flaws?...this one is even better coming from a guy who seems to prefer a game that had so many flaws in the past the game was pretty much unplayable.
Yikes...are you really THAT desperate to get more guys into 2K?!
Sorry, but this post is pointless....to anyone except yourself really.

Re: MLB The Show vs MLB 2K
2K fanboys...
Why do so many gamers think good presentation = simulation?
Since when did that take priority over realistic gameplay? Cause that's all 2K is, and that goes for their basketball title as well. Granted NBA 2K's gameplay isn't bad by any means but it's not where it could be (passing is erratic, offensive rebounds are virtually non-existant) and 2K does football gameplay better than anyone, it's just too bad they can't make a football game anymore. MLB 2K, despite all of its improvements in the presentation aspect, is still dreadful when it comes to gameplay. Gameplay is everything to me. I played one game of the MLB 2K11 demo and deleted it. One of my very first plays I thought it was 2K9 all over again when the first baseman pulled his foot off the bag for no apparent reason. Those sort of things don't happen with a solid gameplay engine. It's sad really because if 2K ever put as much emphasis on gameplay as they do on presentation they'd be putting out one hell of a product. And no, my love of The Show has NOTHING to do with the graphics as I would still choose MVP 05 if the modding for it had kept moving along and staying up to date. That however was ruined by 2K's decision to release their inferior product on the PC market.Comment

Re: MLB The Show vs MLB 2K
I actually don't mind a comparison thread because I'm on the fence this year.
I've played The Show since it arrived on the PS3, and elimack raises some valid points, and I agree - after 4 years, The Show is starting to feel stale.
Don't get me wrong, it's still an amazing game - the animations are as smooth as silk, and the stadiums and player models are gorgeous. But even with the new analog controls, it's starting to feel like much of the same. I don't know if I'd be willing to play a full season of The Show with the same commentary and presentation elements that I've heard for 4 years now.
In regards to 2K11, it's technically not in The Show's league (pun intended), and everyone knows this. The graphics aren't as good, and the animations can be really choppy at times. But from what I've heard so far, the commentary is stellar, and the game just looks... fun. Obviously the developers at San Diego Studios must agree since they implemented 2K's analog controls this year.
Now, I haven't played 2K since 2K3 (which was amazing). Since I was playing MVP and The Show, I missed the shortcomings that befell the 2K . Thankfully, 2K11 looks to be an improvement. Either way, it will be new for me, and that what I'm personally looking for right now. Something different.Comment

Re: MLB The Show vs MLB 2K
All I got from that wall of text was:
-Better presentation = better game, even though that logic doesn't hold up (ironically, you admitted The Show had better visuals)
2K fails at everything but presentation/commentary. I put up with the series for years, because for a long time, all I had was an Xbox 360. I defended the series until I just couldn't deny how bad it was anymore. Even with all of the great exclusives Sony had been putting out, The Show was practically my sole reason for purchasing a PlayStation 3.
The fact is, the MLB 2K series is absolute, unmitigated garbage. It's had the same bugs in it for years. The graphics, which in a SIMULATION game, really do matter, are pitiful. The character models look awful. The fans in the stands look like burn victims.
2K Sports is trying their best to polish a turd, but they won't have anything good until they decide to completely overhaul and rebuild their game from the ground up. They need to go back to the drawing board, because what they're putting out, year after year, is just sad.Comment

You're guessing....at least I can base it on first hand knowledge.
2K baseball had zero(is there a number less than zero?...if so...use it here)...to do with the analog implementation. Zilch.
2K isn't even the first to implement it, so that little volley by the 2K rep was quite laughable...and the boys in S.D. got quite the chuckle from it.
The rest of your post....that's fine...your opinion and your need for gaming. I've got nothing against it....I just wanted to clarify that one little bolded section.

To the other poster: The Show's analog controls are much closer to those of MVP NCAA Baseball than it is to 2K's. So, if the Show is ripping off 2K by going to analog controls then 2K ripped off EA.
Now if only EA would rip off 2K for their football game. But that's a completely different topic...Comment

Re: MLB The Show vs MLB 2K
It's been my observation, that the people who try to like 2K's game are the ones that only have a 360 so it's their only baseball choice. It's almost like they have to convince themselves that they're playing the 'better game'. I think that it is just hatred of Sony in general. I've always said that I think Sony's first party exclusives regardless of the genre, are second to none. Again, this is just one man's opinion.Comment

Re: MLB The Show vs MLB 2K
Totally agree. Fact is, it's a more powerful machine and since their exclusives don't have to be ported to the 360 they can take full advantage of the PS3's power. God how I wish SCEA could make a football game. lolComment
