Considering you don't actually "play" baseball games, you don't really have a horse in this race, right?

If you want to bring up The Show, then fine, it is the greatest console baseball game to let the CPU handle everything while you watch it play out. It's not a as realistic as a good text sim, or even Baseball Pro, but if you need to sit on your couch and use a console, it really rocks.

It's just not that great for gameplay. At least for folks that play 2K12 and post in this thread for no other reason than to discuss a game they love to play.

Now, if one were to be keeping tabs on this forum to make sure no one had the gall to possibly mention that they might like 2K12 better than The Show, I'm sure that person might find my opinions ludicrous. You would think they would just find another place to hand out, though. But there are different rules for for guys from the Show thread that keep tabs here.

I do a lot of comparing. Every year I compare the two games and it's really not worth the headache more times than not. But if you look at these two videos head to head what do you see?

Same teams. One game is at night. One game has more details in the stands and more fleshed out graphics. One has more animations and the players move more realistically. Both are baseball. If you can look past the surface stuff. Both have an analog meter you can use but are very different in execution. The commentators are different. But what makes 2k more fun to some people? It looks worse. That much is for sure. But it doesn't look that bad.

2k baseball is really one of the few sports game on the market these days that still exists as a 2nd fiddle. We've seen Live try to create a nitch and go by the wayside. We've seen football games go not necessarily for the better. We've seen hockey be monopolized. Soccer still has 2 games in town. But all these sports games seem to be consolidating. I'd like 2k to stick around.

If 2k cleans up some of its issues I don't see why it can't be a more comparable game. But this wasn't really meant to be a comparison between the two games. I just want to know why people say I find it more fun.

Well...not exactly.
I can at least claim to play every baseball game produced. EVERY one.

But the title is very ambiguous.
I need a reference point.
It doesn't say "what make 2K FUN?" ...it say's "what makes 2K MORE fun?"
Hence my question.....

If the question is just "fun?"

-stats. They do a superb job at it.
-presenting stats in game. Ditto.

I didn't mention the other game specifically because I didn't want to start a flamewar or even a comparison with the other game really. Just more wanted to know why people make that comment "I find 2k more fun"...

I actually agree with Plache. This thread isn't about the show. I was more talking about 2k. Like what are things people like about this game. Am I insuating over the other game? Sure. But not really..... I more meant in general but what does this game offer that no other game does that makes it more fun? I didn't mention the show on purpose but it could be fifa for all i care.

I find this game fun in spots. Other areas not so much, but certain things keep me coming back over other games in general. Other things make me want to run away screaming.

I think the person who made the point this game doesn't take itself too seriously was good. I think people are taking what I said too literally.

Just wanted to have a nice conversation about what makes this game more fun. But there is always someone who will take things too seriously.

I Also agree with the guy who said if people were talking about what makes the show better than any other game in their forum and some 2k guy came in he'd look ridiculous. Because that's all i was trying to do was look at the positive aspects of this game and what it does better than other games.

God forbid someone try to have a positive thread about this game. The Show fanboys really should not be here. They are basically trolling my thread.

Plache and Oread actually gave me the kind of responses i was looking for and kept it on topic.

Since 2k13 is in development I thought it would be a good way to give some direction to this game and how we hope the series ends up this gen. If anything I think this series has had things it offers but it has been kind of stagnating. It's lacked focus and direction since 2k7.

I think it has potential to be a very good game but it hasn't been in a while. 2k12 is pretty good but it lacks in areas.

Trying to have a constructive discussion about this game is all vs destructive and rehashing teh same stuff. I like this series. I'd like to think there are other people out there who still want to see it improve. I hope it doesn't go in the can like so many other sports games. I think it has potential to be a good game.

Ths series has been running on vapors and an mlb license for so long. I'm one of the few who is actually happy it's back for another year at least. Maybe 2k can make something out of it vs just rehashing the same crap.

watch the videos I posted. This game isn't that far off. It has that dreaded p-word is all. IT's a fun game that has things going for it. It also has warts. If the show wasn't around we'd all be talking about this game and what it has to do to improve. That's all I'm trying to do is generate some of that.

I for one am glad that the series has continued because I love the variety from different baseball games. In the early 2000's I think there was 4 games and I played them all, enjoying the different experiences.

But, answering the question from the OP (who I mostly agree with)

The pitching interface is a blast, and fielding is not routine and boring like most baseball games. Throwing is also fun and challenging at times depending on the fielder.

That being said, the quirky animations, player models and sub par graphics are a big negative for me. Also, while batting has improved in the last few versions, I still feel a bit like I'm hitting with a whiffle ball bat.

I remember making rosters for that game up to about 2003 (as well as possible at least). Man, I was a 12-15 year old nerd.

EDIT: And to clarify for the potentially unaware audience, I meant "Ball in a Cup" as not only a good thing, but also a distraction from what I'm sure people were expecting the real answer to be.

I played all those. I'm late thirties here and have been around. Love baseball games.

If I had to rate 2k baseball

2k7 was about an 8. It was a solid game. It was a little arcadey but was polished for the most part and had good direction. It was end of cycle imo.

2k8 completely scrapped what they accomplished in 2k7. Looked terrible. Looked like 2k7 but removed a lot of cutscenes. Played good. Was a stuttery mess. But introduced what we have today as far as the gesture system and fielding throw meter. It actually played a really solid game of baseball but was a mess. It took an old engine and downgraded it graphically. Looked like 2k7 played like the games we have today. 2k8 was like a hybrid game where nothing really worked. 6.8

2k9 was an arcadey piece of trash. Hitters swung at everything and couldn't hit a curveball to save their lives. They introduced a new graphics engine. You also could hit a homerun whenever you wanted. There was way too much contact in general. That game was a 6 at best. I think this was the game with all the morphing issues as well. I give 2k9 a 5.

2k10 actually marketed that players didn't morph anymore. I don't remember too much abotu 2k10 but I think it was more along the lines of what we have today. 6.5

2k11 continued the trend. Very similar to 2k12. Colors were more washed out though and it wasn't as graphically impressive imo. More gameplay improvements but still felt somewhat bland.

2k12 is probably the best in series since 2k7. Hitters are patient now. Pitching control is more random. Colors pop more and player models seem more legit. Stadiums also look nicer. Still a lot of quirks though. They really worked on getting their gameplay right. IT's probably back to a 7 or so.

I don't see why 2k13 can't take that next step and polish the series off and get this game back to around an 8 where 2k7 left off. If this game is in a 5 year cycle we are about there. It sucks they only have 2 months to work on it. Hopefully they've been working on it anyways. I'm somewhat excited about this years game for these reasons. There's a trend. I think from 2k10 to 2k12 they worked on getting the gameplay right. Now they just need to polish it off and get that in between stuff.
