I remember reading somewhere that it was to trick uninformed consumers (mainly parents) into thinking "Oh - All Star Baseball has the year 2005 in it - it must be the newer game versus the older MVP Baseball 2004"

Yes, it has been around for a long time, and EA is definitely the one who started it.
The first time I ever remember seeing it was for Madden '92 on Genesis, which came out in late '91.
The reason they are now using the current year is because when Triple Play came out for ps2 in 2001, they just called it "Triple Play Baseball" so that they could then use the current year in subsequent editions.Comment

Oh, and if they were to name it ASBB 2004 again, people would probably get confused which is which. Especially those unfamiliar with the series.Comment
