    Re: Icon debate..part 17

I don't think it's that close at all. I'm not talking about how cursor batting and zone batting mimic baseball but rather in cursor batting I think there's less flexibity to chase pitches you weren't really expecting. Sometimes with the cursor I'll have it sit somewhere and if the pitch is a strike but not close to where my cursor is it's more difficult than change than in zone-batting.

Cursor system puts most of the technique on the human. Where zone hitting is influenced less by the excact precision of fast fingers but how the CPU determines were you should hit the ball.

Now as for realism that's a debate for another thread.

I also think that there's a better system than just zone or cursor. I don't know what it is. With MVP you might never see someone swing right over the top of a pitch or under it. That's a big problem for zone hitting because the CPU determines where the bat is going to meet the ball. I don't think the answer is WSB First person baseball view. How are you supposed to mimic the movements of a real batter. Let's say you see curveball but it has more bite to it. Real batters can adjust somewhat to it. Sure you might swing right over the top of it but you also can make an adjustment to make contact. This happens during the whole second or less it takes for a ball to cross the plate. I don't know how you capture that in a videogame.

All I know is if I don't watch the ball out of the pitcher's hadn in ASB I strike out very often. In WSB I like watching the ball and moving the cursor too. but I can see the ball better in that one so don't use an icon at all. In ASB watchig the cursor doesn't help me. I need to know what type of pitch it is so I can determine the movement of the pitch and make adjustments.

I don't get a chance to play much. But so far I enjoy both WSB and ASB. Problem is I always feel like I have too much control with the 3d cursor in ASB and don't feel the timing that I feel in WSB. I've tried the classic cursor and never hit anything on the ground and nothing but doubles and 5-6 homers a game....and I'm not that good at either.

Oh well...tough call this year since I'm only getting one game.

I understand what you are saying about the 3D cursor, but I think it is about discipline. I only use the 3D option if I am trailing or the game is tied, I think of it as a cheat almost. Otherwise I just leave the cursor alone to increase the challenge when I already have the lead.

Let's face it, baseball is the most difficult game to recreate in video games because it is the most difficult game in real life (though i can't play hockey, but that's just me) Hockey, Football and Basketball all translate pretty easily to videogames in terms of realistic gameplay and stats. With baseball, your average will always be higher than a real team (playing not simming) and you will always have more K's and less BB's. I think it is up to the individual gamer to add their own twist to make the game more real.

Personally I don't want to win all the time, and I certainly don't want to lose all the time. The way I play my season is this. I start off on veteran so that I don't get frustrated. As soon as I win 5 straight on veteran I switch to all-star to increase the challenge. If I lose three in a row in all-star, i drop back to veteran, and the pattern goes on.

In the game itself I do all kinds of things to try and increase realism. I pitch around big hitters alot and therefore increase my walk totals a little. I try not to swing until at least the third pitch of each at bat, if I fall behind 0-2, so be it, I want to make the pitcher work. Early in the game I will use the 3D cursor once I have men on base, but once I am ahead, no more 3D cursor. If I start getting alot of hits I will have all my hitters hit for power, decreasing my chances of contact and increasing my chance for homeruns, that way I don't get 2 runs for every 10 hits.

Anyway, my point is that if you establish some rules for yourself you can increase the challenge. Mastering a sports game is no fun, I think we can all agree on that. The reason why I think sports games are far more interesting than adventure games or RPG's is that you can't beat them. They always present new challenges and each game is different. If the game gets to easy for you, add your own rules and make it more challenging for yourself. The video game makers will never find the balance between too easy and too hard, that is up to you to find.

I agree. It was way too easy to get the exact hit that you wanted. Flyball, groundball, pull the pitch, it was way too easy. I am looking forward to the new zone hitting that ASB is using this year.
