Is it just me, or do others have less hope for WSB's future evolution every time they finish reading one of FatPitcher's posts?

4. I think if you took 45% WSB, 45%ASB, 10%HRK, 0%TP, you'd have a great baseball game.

Add a little bit of High Heat to that list, as well.
Might as well have them all represented.Comment

Re: Pitch count/history in ASB?
Where are you getting the idea that all the hits in WSB are scripted? That's not true. And where are you getting the idea that I'm mocking ASB? ASB is a pretty good game. I'm mocking YOU for defending it to the death, putting a premium on the most arcane details, and claiming that some really small things in WSB "ruin the game." (I'm talking about things like home run collision, pitcher warmups, career stats...not AI or difficulty).
I'm not God's gift to baseball games or whatever, but I have a more objective view of what important and what's not than people who sleep with their ASB disc under their pillows. (You are taking this whole thing very personally...why?) I don't think ASB is a bad game, but if you insist on trying to insult me and start a fight any time I make a post, I'll point out the flaws in your arguments (which in this case includes showing that ASB is not the holy grail you claim it is). I'm sorry that you are too emotional about this issue to discuss it without resorting to taunts and insults; maybe you do have something useful or convincing to say, but instead all that comes out is bias and bitterness. I have fun with baseball games, and talking about them should be fun, too. There's no need to rage against people that don't agree with you.
And this may be news to some, but most people take the day off from work on Sundays. I just take long lunches.Comment

Re: Pitch count/history in ASB?
Come at people with an air of arrogance and you'll get it thrown right back you... especially when you are making claims about a game which you've played for only a few hours.
You look at things like pickoff moves as mundane details that aren't worthy of your time if they won't help you sell copies... I look at them as a small part of a whole game. Baseball, to me, is the greatest sport ever created, and its history and tradition is without equal. ASB plays like it was made with a similar mindset, and that is why they have had/will have my business for as long as the game continues to be made.

Re: Pitch count/history in ASB?
Details are good, but if you ever played WSB2K2, you know that there were bigger fish to fry. It's not, "Do we want pickoffs from the windup?", it's "Do we want pickoffs from the windup if that means we spend another week tuning stealing, ship late, and go out of business?" When you've got your gameplay systems pretty much down pat for a couple years, you have a lot more breathing room to add details and features that would wreak havok if you were trying to make another changes (animation, physics, AI) at the same time. All 3 of those things were changing in WSB, so it would have been risky to try and throw in the proverbial kitchen sink. You might argue that we had some trouble just with the changes that we did do. The AI could have been better in a lot of areas, for example.
It's not that details aren't important, it's that you have to have the foundation complete first. ASB is obviously in a more advanced state of development than WSB; it would be kind of silly for us to try to beat them in terms of sheer number of features and detail. What we hope to achieve is to make things we do add appealing, enjoyable, and accessible. Franchise Mode is an example of that. We don't have Expansion mode, extra stadiums, etc., but we do have a Franchise mode that most people prefer over ASB's...not because it's feature-laden or refined, but because we threw in some things that a lot of people find fun or engaging. You'll see a lot more details in WSB next year than you did this year; the most important ones, of course, are the ones that make the game more fun for everybody. Double play animations, controllable leadoffs, and jumping would be more important than, say, mascots, manage-only mode, and collectable cards. It's not that those last ones are worthless, but stuff that needs to be in the game takes priority over random neat stuff.
By the way, I'm really not that involved with actual gameplay stuff; about 90% of the work I did for this year's version and am doing for next year's is on Franchise mode.Comment

Re: Pitch count/history in ASB?
Fatpitcher, good to see you still posting, unlike ASB producer.
I'm a big WSB fan, but only for multiplayer b/c the computer is just too easy and the whole pitching down the middle thing shouldn't work.
Any word on those things being fixed for next year? Thanks man~University of Evansville Graduate

Re: Pitch count/history in ASB?
Yes, as a matter of fact I've spent the last couple days completely redesigning pitching and batting AI (again). The provisional title for next year's game is "WSB2K3--Revenge of the CPU"
You should really cut the ASB producer some slack...a producer's time is always in short supply and I think we can all agree that if it comes down to it, that time is better spent working on the game than on a message board.Comment

Re: Pitch count/history in ASB?
Fatpitcher, you say 90% of the work you did and are doing is on the Franchise mode....then you stated your completely redoing the batter/pitcher A.I. How large is the WSB team (developers)?
Anyway.....if its true that a large emphasis is on simply making the computer a little more competitive/realistic.....its music to my ears. I certainly love the details ASB offers but cant seem to get past the fact that I simply do not enjoy the gameplay.
Oh, and be sure to go nuts with that ESPN license!gt: casey yellowstone PS5Comment

pitchers [in ASB] catching everything hit up the middle no matter how hard it's hit
<hr /></blockquote><font class="post">
I rather have that then mess up my no hitter because the pitcher in WSB cannot catch a line drive hit to him.
Oh, also fix:
1) Pitching Low and Out Curves and High and In Sliders because the AI hardly swing at those.
2) Put in a jump catch animation cause I hate seeing balls flying over the 3rd baseman's head when he could easily jump 3 inches to catch the ball.
3) Outfielders standing by the wall and watch a Home Run ball just barely go over the wall. He should jump 3 inches to catch it.
4) Move the batting camera in 3 inches. It sits out too far making hitting difficult due to the user's point of view.
5) Some pitchers like Sele and Wakefield have unrealistic pitches such as their sliders and curve balls.
6) Check out Wakefield's Knuckle Ball and get that fixed.
7) User cannot steal Home from 3rd until the picther release his pitch.
8) Orioles get too many singles because they [user] hit the ball just over the infield and under the outfielders. CPU should bring the outfielders in.
9) Stealing bases are too easy on picthers with slow releases such as Mussina.
10) I'll think of more, only played the game for 2 hours last month.Comment

I haven't had any problems with the low and out curves. With high and in sliders, you're not going to get many swings since it's not a pitch that is going to be a strike (in real life) very often. This is more of a problem with the exaggerated strike zone, and should be easy to fix.

Actually, I think it's a problem with the game in general, regardless of who pitches.
And yes, a jump animation is a must.
What's your obsession about 3 inches all about??!?

Well, just because a guy quits posting, you'd think I stopped reading altogether. I don't post because it doesn't foster productive discussions - its much more interesting to see what you guys like & dislike rather than be bombarded with questions (like I'm sure I'll get after I post this).
I read everything I can get my hands on in an attempt to make ASB a better game. I'll also throw in here that myself and a large number of my dev team spend time with other people's games, and if you look at our game, you'll find its influenced by a wide range of old baseball games - some of the old World Series games included.
That said, there's one thing you'll never see us do, and that's bash another company's game - its extremely unprofessional.Comment
