    Re: XBN Reviews ASB

I gotta agree with truckie for the mostpart....there are some things that effect gameplay...drives me nuts! I play mostly online and when i do play offline..I only use the settings allowed to me online. Fielder cam is nice and fun but should not be the only pick online. I will definitly keep it and enjoy it but I will try out espn this weekend and see if the gameplay is right for me.

My one major problem with ASB is the lack of sliders. If you could do things like adjust CPU/user outfielder speed and hitting power this game would truely rock but as it stands now it is a very good game that doesn't quite realize it's full potential. The franchise modes and all that other stuff is superb but the play on the field suffers from several problems that IMO detract from the game ie: when the play just stops to cut to the next batter even though the ball is still in play this has happened to me a number of times. The replays are atrocious half the time when you look at a hit the ball has actually gone by the hitter and looks like the ball is comeing from either the ground or the catchers mitt. the fielders throwing in the opposite direction from the way they are looking. Maybe these are small things to some people but to me they are pretty big flaws because they affect the gameplay in just about every game.
I'm not here to judge one game against the other but to point out some problems that I think are keeping ASB from being a truely great baseball game.

I agree 100%. ASB could be the best baseball game of all time if only there were basic sliders and those weird animations are fixed. One of the things I like about MVP is actually seeing the ball hit the bat, it makes it so believable and realistic. The other thing I like about MVP is the replays. They use fantastic camera angles to make it look like a real baseball game. I just hope ASB will take notice of this and fix these problems for next years game.

It funny, I was reading the IGN review of ASB again. The title of the review is "Closest to the real thing. Farthest from the competition" Or something like that. Now what in the hell is that suppose to mean? I can even put into words how confusing that is.

Well, I have to say that straight out of the box I wouldn't be playing this game. No way. Far too many doubles off the wall for singles, players not tagging up and advancing when they should.

That said, after doing some major tweaking I have resolved that problem and am really enjoying this game.

I don't know about that, but EA does know how to play to the reviewers. MVP plays great out of the box, and whether or not the flaws bother you, they are not immediately apparent. ASB by contrast has some glitches that become apparent realtively quickly, while some of its best qualities can only be recognized after several hours of gameplay.

Since most reviewers don't seem to spend adequate time with sports games, I can see where they would like MVP alot more.

And Patsfan, thanks for the topic, but you'll probably get a little more bang for your trolling buck over on the ESPN board, so scoot.

I think you have a good point there. I don't have ASB this year for budgetary reasons, but I think my thought processes for last year's ASB and this year's MVP could illustrate a point (that's a scary thought actually!)

"What went through my head in the weeks of playing MVP"

Wow..this game is a lot of fun! Hmm...there don't seem to be too many CPU steals, but damn this game is fun. I didn't realize Sammy Sosa could lay out for a ball like that, but damn this game is fun.

"What went through my head last year while playing ASB"

Wow...batting is tough! Starting to get the hang of batting, but I still can't field the ball right. Ohh..so THAT'S how future throws work. Wow...this game plays more like baseball than any I've played. Damn...I lost a guy to waivers...guess I should have read that rulebook more closely. This game is great!

The sad fact is that most reviewers have the attention span of a 5 year old with ADHD on too much caffeine. They can't/don't/won't spend the time to appreciate a game like ASB.
