Yet even more scores...this time from OPM

Sorry if this is old, but I didn't see it on our boards.

The lastest issue of OPM broke down the 3 baseball titles as follows.

Best pitching: MVP (mentioned 989's mimicing of the meter, liked the K zone, but prefered MVP's meter to them all)

Best Hitting: MVP (Said was the best by the slimmest of margins, but said hitter's eye feature brought it home.)

Best Fielding: MVP and MLB 2006 *tie* (Likes the A.I. on all counts, but enjoys the preloading throws of MLB and MVP)

Baserunning: MLB 2006(Said they had the most simple and intuitive system only fautl is lack of controllable slides.)

Graphics/Presentation: MLB 2K5 ( Said animations on MLB were fantastic, but presentation was ho hum, MVP was solid, but 2K5 took the cake because of presentation and commentary.)

Franchise: DRAW all 3 (This one puzzles me as both MVP and MLB 2006 have deep involving franchise modes, complete with emotion between game, yet 2K5 is still pretty much bare bones. OPM says they all do great jobs and was too close to call.)

Gimmicks: MVP (Said MVP had better unlockables *like this catagory is a huge concern for the hardcore fans)

Overall: (Saying it's a solid year for baseball sims with no title showing any glaring weaknesses. While you can't go wrong with which game you choose, MVP has the best overall package.)

Now I liked what he said above, but scoring is what threw me off.

    MLB 2006/MLB 2K5: 3.5/5
    MVP 2005: 4.5/5

If they are so close, why the one point differential between the two. At least give the other two titles 4's if you say its a close race.

    Oh well...there it is.

These number scores never make any sense to me! Their words never match the number scores. I just basically read what they have to say and take it from there.

What I do like is when they compare all the games as they did above. That way you can compare and see what area a game is perceived to be stronger in than another! That comparision is much more valuable to me than any number score.

Well, it's nice to hear a little more about what MLB 2006 is REALLY like (since you can't really trust previews anymore), but some of things they said about MVP and MLB 2K5 prompted this from me: what are they smoking?

AMEN, nemesis04! My soapbox has always been that there is no need for that score at the bottom of the review. It only muddies and confuses the situation. In my book, the numbers are meaningless. We should not be fighting about numbers. Ever.

edit: I could probably live with a thumbs up/down system. But we would be able to discern that from the text of the review anyway.

Everything said about MVP and MLB2K5 in their review I agree with. I returned MLB and kept MVP. I was going to buy MLB2006, but now I'll rent it. If it's not greatly improved over last year's game, I don't see myself paying 40 bucks for it. Maybe next year if MVP goes away.
                    NFL: Patriots
                    MLB: Red Sox
                    CB: Tar Heels

MVP sure wasn't greatly improved over last year's game, as its almost the same exact thing with a few minor touches.
