that's not really variable umpire, but yes it is a positive that players have different strike zones based on their hieght and stance. if my memory serves me right the shortest player ever to play in a major league game was some migit the tigers put on their roster. seems like they just wanted to get a baserunner, so they let him pinch hit but didn't allow him to swing. his strikezone was so small, he easily drew the base on balls, the tigers put a pinch runner in for him and they had the baserunner they wanted. maybe, just for fun tonight, i'll play around with the create a player and try to make the shortest guy allowable and give him a real crouched stance to see how many walks i can draw.

but back to the variable umpire. i heard that different umpires had different personalities in the game, but it seems like balls and strikes are all called pretty consistantly. maybe, its there, but its pretty subtle if it is.

I loved the faded strike zone approach ASB 04 had as well. So, while they need to make the strike zone smaller, umpires aren't always so black and white with their calls. There is always that gray area, and the corners and borders should be faded. That would probably make for a lot more walks.

I agree 100%. Not only do they need to lower the top of the zone, they need to lower the bottom as well. Most umpires will call a strike on a ball that is say a balls width below the zone. They should keep the variable umpires, but change the default zone from say the bottom of the knee cap to either the top of the belt or the belly button. Then the variable umpires can base their calls off of the new zone.

Screw what the rule book says, this is supposed to represent real life, which doesn't represent the rule book. Also, if this is the case, why have the ability to argue close plays if they are always 100% right?

When I was showing new cursor ideas I also made an adjusted strike zone. Here's what I think it should be like for a guy's stance/height like Curtis Granderson:

All-Star Baseball had strike zones recreated perfectly before the series went extinct.

So the more accurate thread title would be, "When are video games going to once again get the strike zone right?"

I remember a few HH games where I couldn't even try nibbling on the black because it would never be a strike. I've never experienced that in MLB2K7 as I've always had pitches on the black called strikes.
It's not as good as HH's variable umps.

There needs to be more variety as the variable umps are only slightly different. The difference is so small it's almost unnoticeable. Which I guess is the case for you.

I got ya. That must be the case. I'll have to pay closer attention the next few games I play. Been a little busy recently so haven't had a chance to play since Sunday.
