Re: Want to Check Swing W/ the Swingstick? This is Your Day!
I agree it's clunky. I was just pointing out that the game developers might have looked at it differently, thinking they'd come up with a cool way to mimic check swings, when in fact it doesn't really work very well.Comment

No offense, but this info was discussed here shortly after the game came out. Can't check a power swing - most people know and understand that. Nice though that you can provide this info for those who have been playing the game for a month now without reading their game manual and who were wondering which button to push in order steal second and stuff like that
(The instruction manual apparently isn't clear enough for a lot of people. How many threads have you seen about how the SS is too clunky or not designed properly, just to find out that they were trying to do a complete swing by quickily pressing the stick down and releasing it, and swinging late everytime? I do think the manual doesn't explain the check swing mechanic clearily enough, and a huge majority of people can only do it with random success. I was simply trying to clarify how to accomplish it at will, and not by random success.)Last edited by sleepytercel; 04-04-2007, 12:18 PM.Comment

Re: Want to Check Swing W/ the Swingstick? This is Your Day!
I am a little confused. At one point you mention that "you must not let of the "R" stick with your thumb....", but then you say "let go of the stick just a sec..."
Please clarify if you could... and then you say "push it back down"... Do you mean push the stick down as pushing it in? I would think pulling it back down makes more sense?
ThanksComment

Overall, now that I am comfortable with how the mechanic works, it doesn't feel so "clunky" anymore. It actually seems to be logical when you get used to it.Comment

Re: Want to Check Swing W/ the Swingstick? This is Your Day!
I still think the logic behind the whole thing is broken.
The guys that check their swings are the power/agreesive guys. These are the guys that gear up for a fastball and know that if they get it they are going to swing out of their shoes to try and hit it out of the stadium. The instant they see the ball break or cut or just realize that it's not the pitch they are looking for, they try and stop their swing. Most hitters check their swings because they are fooled on a pitch (either pitch type or location).
Guys that are contact hitters usually just react to the pitch. These guys usually don't get fooled because they're not already pre-determined that they are going to kill the next pitch.
This is what my experience and gut feeling tells me. Unfortunately, I don't think they keep a lot of stats on check swings to actually prove it. I can tell you that as an A's fan, Bobby Crosby is notorious for checking his swing. He's also known for swinging his hardest on every pitch and is pretty much a guess hitter (this is why he strikes out so much). Another guy that stands out as a check swing artist is Gary Sheffield.
I really can't explain it any more, but to me it makes sense that the more aggressive you are at the plate, the more likely you are to check your swing. I'm not saying every power hitter is agressive, but most are. This is why usually the guys at the top of the Strikeout list are guys that swing for the fences (Adam Dunn, Ryan Howard, Jim Thome, Richie Sexson). And like everything there are exceptions (Mark Belhorn), but I think my logic is correct here.
Either way, no matter what swing type you are attempting, you should at least be able to try and attempt a check your swing. I could see if it was just harder to succeed when doing a power swing (as you are putting more force into the actual swing) than when just taking a normal swing, but the fact that you can't even attempt it is just a poor idea.Last edited by Trevytrev11; 04-04-2007, 12:46 PM.Comment

You have to NOT let go of the swing stick in order to check swing.
After you pull the swing stick all the way back, begin to push it up just about a 1/4 of the way, THEN pull it back. Don't let the swing stick get back to center when you're pushing it up. That's it!

This is the real issue IMO. People are used to letting the swing stick go when they hit. But in order to check your swing, you have to NOT let go, but actually keep your thumb on the stick while swinging, and THEN pull back if you want to check your swing. Seems people are first going to have to unlearn letting go, and instead learn to keep their thumb on the stick - which could be a problem for some.Comment

Re: Want to Check Swing W/ the Swingstick? This is Your Day!
Its actually a bit easier to check swing using classic interface. Not a whole lot, but a little. There are actually two ways you can do it.
1. Pull on the right trigger right after you swing before the bat reaches the plate and you'll check swing.
2. Think of the A button in terms of the swing stick. If you press more than half way down on the A button you've gone too far and won't be able to check your swing. If you stop pressing before your swing reaches the plate you'll check your swing.
Believe it or not the 2nd option is actually easier. Hope that helps.Comment

Re: Want to Check Swing W/ the Swingstick? This is Your Day!
Good points, but I'm not sure power swingers check any more than contact swingers. But I get your what you're saying, and this would be a non-issue if they'd simply go back to two-button swinging where you could check either swing (as I recall). Or how about you have to push up on the swing stick for any swing - which makes it easier to pull back and check - but to use a power swing, you squeeze the L trigger while swinging (or whatever).
But that is a whole different issue for another discussion.Comment

Re: Want to Check Swing W/ the Swingstick? This is Your Day!
Alright put it this way baa. I read the manual the first day I got it. The check swing is incredibly complicated so I never went back to read it again. There is a little thing on the check swing in the manual and that is it. They didn't go in depth to describe how to use it. It just says once the swing has started pull back immediately. On another note this has to be one of the hardest things to do. You have to have incredible timing and you have to judge if the ball will be in the strike zone or not. That just sounds really really hard.NHL-Minnesota Wild

Re: Want to Check Swing W/ the Swingstick? This is Your Day!
I know many people on the 2K boards were really having an issue with it. Usually if I post a thread, I'll post here too. However, I don't think there's anything wrong with having an actual thread on it, considering that the instructions were buried in conversation.
I updated the first post citing your quote and forum links.Last edited by sleepytercel; 04-04-2007, 05:11 PM.Comment
