I must admit this is a realy good review by the original poster. I think it is tough to tell how bad or good the game will be. So just wait until the demo comes out before you all worry!

Re: My MLB 2k8 Video Thoughts
I guess the more important question, as a former Division III pitcher, is whether or not the batter can dictate where that ball is hit based on the direction of the swing stick. If I am batting, and recognize a slider down and away, can I pull the R-stick back, and then push it forward to the 2 O'clock position, and take that ball into right field? I know Brinkman said that the where the ball is hit is based largely on timing and the player ratings, but if the pitcher is working me away, away, away, will the game give me the control to go with that pitch, and make the pitcher pay for living out there on the outer edge? Likewise, if I try to sneak a 2 seamer on the inner half, can the batter pull back and go to the 11 O'clock spot on the R-stick and yank that pitch to the left side? I am honestly happy that there is no pre-loaded Power or Contact decision, and I believe this will help make the game play a bit more realistically. Sometimes that easy sweet stroke launches the ball farther than trying to crush it. But even a .200 Bush leaguer can go with an outside pitch and push it to the opposite field. I sure hope that they had the sense to make the swing stick directional at the very least.

Now, say you're that same batter on an outside pitch, and you swing early enough to pull the ball with a pull swing. Well, you probably got the barrel on the ball, but you hooked the wrong kind of pitch, and probably grounded out to second base. At least, this is the case in real life. Hopefully they replicated this in 2K8.
And finally, you got the inside pitch that you wanted. You swing early enough to pull it with your pull swing, and you connect. That should be the best possible resulting hit you can get. Hopefully this is how it was done.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: My MLB 2k8 Video Thoughts
Blzer, I would be happy either way. If, and this is the big IF, they replicated the timing of the swing enough to dictate, at least in part, where, and with how much gusto the balls goes where it would go in real life....I am a happy guy. My beef with the games of yesteryear has always been the ability to throw normal physics and laws of motion to the wayside, and pull off feats of impossibility at the plate. Can studs time a swing right and yank a pitch on the outer half, and pull it over the wall? Sure thing. Joe Carter was an animal, and Mike Schmidt used to pull pitches that had no business being pulled. But David Eckstein is not, I repeat, NOT going to take a two seamer on the outside black, and pull it 425 feet. So as long as they have at least taken some sort of natural laws into account, and the timing of the swing actually dictates where the ball ends up... Well let's just call that a step in a positive direction.

Re: My MLB 2k8 Video Thoughts
real life hitting is all based on timing...your not gonna hit an inside pitch the exact same way that you hit an outside pitch, you let the outside pitch get deep and the inside one you hit out in front. Its all timing, and so is mlb 2k8Comment

Re: My MLB 2k8 Video Thoughts
Very good objective post by the thread starter. I think people were expecting way, way too much from the get go. This is a case of people wanting too much, too quickly. WE have got to remember that this was just 4 game play videos, and it was of a preview version of the game. Who knows where that version of the game is at, compared to what the finished version is gonna look like.Comment

Re: My MLB 2k8 Video Thoughts
i do hope you can control where you "aim" your swing. i shouldnt have to intentionally swing late if i want to hit a groundball to the 2b side so i can advance a runner to third.
and while i dont need a "power" swing (although i wouldnt mind one if it actually demanded you be more accurate with your timing), i do think you should be able to influence groundball vs flyball.
"the bigs" did all of this right. push the stick to pull an inside fastball? power hit to right for a left hander. push the stick to pull a a fastball a little outside? weak grounder or popup because you couldnt pull it. same for trying to push a hit down the 3b line, do it on an outside pitch and it works, on an inside pitch and you are punished with a near automatic out on weak contact.
i dont get the feeling 2k8 is going to have a system like this. timing is obviously crucial, but major leaguers arnt always just neutrally going up there trying to hit a ball as well as they can... sometimes you need to just get the ball in the air for a sac fly or a grounder to advance a runner and such. trying to pull a ball to right would substitute for a power swing, but with the proper pros and cons instead of just nearly automatic HRs or robbed HRs. i want that control.Comment

Re: My MLB 2k8 Video Thoughts
But if you pause it, on the video [diving play] where it shows Mark Reynolds coming up to bat, and it shows the cut scene of him getting into the box, you can clearly see the "3D Grass" for a split second before the video decides to blur itself.
Now that the storm is settled and we can go over all the videos slowly, you can see all the player controlled mishaps that is NOT the game.Last edited by EnigmaNemesis; 01-27-2008, 10:35 AM.Ⓥ Boston Red Sox | Miami DolphinsComment
