I would have to agree with this comparison based on things like pitch targets, text popping up in 2K8, and yes, on-field sounds. All contribute to 2K's game looking and sounding much like a cartoon version of baseball (apart from the nice graphics and player models). Certainly, if you compare a TV broadcast to both The Show and 2K8, it's not even close. The Show looks like it was made to emulate modern baseball. 2K8 looks like it was made to provide gamers - and young gamers, really - with a cool, fun alternative-take on the game. And I suppose that's not bad, just a game design choice.

I will absolutely jump on GT5... but what else? Honestly, I do not know... I've been an XBOX guy and now I've owned a 360 since launch. There is nothing on the PS3 to date that has been remotely interesting but... times are changing.

The Show + Blu Ray just might be enough to persuade me to make a move...

I bought the ps3 for MLB The Show. I don't regret it at all. But I kept my Xbox 360. I wouldn't trade a system for another. You will regret it. I'm not full of money I just saved up. I must say the show is well worth the price of the PS3. Plus you get Blu-Ray.

Hopefully there's a bright future for the ol' games in the past like:

          - SOCOM
          - ATV Offroad Fury
          - Twisted Metal
          - SSX (though I know it's now for all consoles, I feel the PS2 controller is far and beyond most suitable for this series)

It's just unfortunate that Sony lost all of its exclusives (most importantly GTA and Guitar Hero), because otherwise I feel it would be right up there with Microsoft when it comes to competition.

But most importantly, The Show and Blu Ray together (not just Blu Ray movies, but the technology available for SCEA to completely max out this game) make any of my other points I said just completely moot, especially if you're a baseball fan. If there's one thing 2K is seemingly limited to, it's the "balance" that they somewhat have to maintain with their systems. They can make this game for PS2 like five times more powerful with the space they have, but I fear they won't take advantage of it. Why? I really don't know. They seemed to do as much as possible for Xbox when PS2 was just given a big middle finger when it came to sports games, so now they should do the same for the PS3 over 360. SCEA doesn't have this conflict, so they can do what they need to to get the game where it is.

... but game space is no excuse for four years of atrocious bat sounds and poor marketing.

To each his own, but bro honestly you can do better things w/ your money than blowing it on another console when you say you're only going to play one game on it.

This is the same way I feel. Don't get me wrong. The show is a really good game but I don't want I buy a system for 1 game. I had a ps3 and got rid of it because of lack of games and the quality of them as well. Many people are going crazy and they have not even played this game yet. I think 2k8 is going to surprise alot if people. That's my opinion. I say people need to relax and wait.
NBA2K is the standard of sports games period.

I am not doubting your source, but I'm sorry I just find that very hard to believe. Current statistics (as of Feb '08) indicate Xbox 360 is still ahead in sales by close to 7 million units (17,194,000 vs 8,196,000). Given the current sales trends of both units, PS3 would have to sell close to 9 million units this year to even get close... and thats only if Microsoft only sells 2 million units this year, which I'm sure they will surpass. In contrast, PS2 in its heyday would sell 7 million in a year and I'm sorry a PS2 this PS3 is most certainly not. Coupled with the fact we are heading into a recession, I really can't possibly fathom how PS3 would outsell Xbox 360 this year.

I agree that EA might be off in regards to the PS3 catching up to the 360, but I don't think it's far off to say there's a chance they could outsell them this year.

And even though the 360 might have 11M units in North America, if Sony can get their number to around 5-7M that's at least a strong base to justify supporting software for it.

I agree with you. That is why I traded all of my XBOX 360 and accessories for the 80gb PS3. No cash left my wallet and I'll get the sports title I want. Not practicle to have both systems. MS should have done something with the High Heat series. Anyhoo, happy with my exchange and the Show on 3/4.
Things are looking up for sports gaming!

I agree. I think PS3 will outsell them this year. Come the holidays or maybe even as early as the summer I really think Blu-ray is going to catch on. MGS4 and hopefully a God of War game by the holidays and they will be in very good shape.

Re: Bat Sounds, The SHow and other 'little' items...

My opinion - If you've got the money, go for it? Heck, I just bought a PS3 mainly for The Show and as a VERY good Blu-Ray player. After using the PS3 for 3 weeks now, I've realized how much more sound the hardware is on the PS3 than the 360 and it has become my console of choice for the future. Online gaming is the PS3's biggest downfall IMO, but if you don't game online, it's a superb machine. I know many have complained about the lack of games, but frankly, the PS3 was released a year behind the 360 so it will catch up...and if I were a betting man, I would bet that this is the year it will happen.

I still do have the 360, but it's only being used for arcade games by my fiance. Some might see that as a waste of money instead of trading it in, but we all have different incomes and different levels of disposable income. What you need to ask yourself is "Can I afford this? If I do buy it and get laid off tomorrow, will I be OK to pay my bills/mortgage/car payment etc... for the next 6 months on money I've saved if I can't find another job before then?". That's the way I view it...although I make sure I have enough money saved for a full year of being laid off because the job market in Pittsburgh is terrible.

                      Jumping off my financial soapbox.

Excellent post and one i fully agree with.

I have a 360, Wii (the wifes christmas present from me to her, she uses that mainly) and now a PS3 as of yesterday, which i only bought, i admit, for The Show, Blu Ray is an added bonus, after playing The Show demo for 5 minutes i knew i had made a good choice, its staggeringly good.

Yes i dont need all these systems, but i want them, and i can afford it and still pay a big mortgage and other bills ok, so why the hell not?

Got to live a little sometimes

I have to develop a convincing arguement for the wife on why I NEED two systems. My game library on the 360 is sick (lots of games) so I'm not willing to trade the sytem. But The Show... mmmmm... so good. The demo is simply jaw-dropping good.

2k7 and 2k8 look way better...Plus The Show can't even get player bodies and sig stances right.
