    MLB 2k10 Wish List

Hopefully I'm not jumping the gun, but I believe now is the time to propose changes to this series that we (the sim community) want implemented. Let's face it, there are numerous options missing in MLB 2k9, and many improvements need to be made before this game can be truly excellent. Now, I realize everyone is awaiting a patch to fix AI hitter aggressiveness and some of the other issues such as first basemen being pulled off the bag. I'm under the assumption, possibly naively, that a patch will be released that addresses the larger problems in 2k9. This thread is NOT for obvious bugs present in the current game, nor is it intended to be an outlet for complaints or impressions of 2k9. There is a thread for impressions already stickied.

Anyway, onto my wishes for Visual Concepts:

    1) During my playtime with 2k9, it's become abundantly clear that the progressively lighting system is poorly implemented. I started a sunny 1 o'clock game and it was dark by the sixth inning. That's just silly. I'd rather not have progression at all than have it completely broken. One of the earlier games (either 2k5 or 2k7) had the progression and shadows right, and it looked great. Not sure what happened here, but it'd be nice if it were fixed. I know Blzer is the biggest proponent of this, and I wholeheartedly agree with him. It adds so much atmosphere to the game. VC, please bring progressive lighting back in its proper form.

    2) Active scoreboards.

    3) For the love of god, do NOT mess with the hitting system or remove cursor (zone) hitting. I repeat, DON'T remove it. It's awesome just the way it is. Please don't feel the need to "improve" it or tinker with it or install some new-fangled hitting device. The current zone system feels perfect.

    4) The presentation is wonderful, and I'm sure you guys are working on the kinks, but I've seen some strange stuff happen. It might be amusing to see Joe Girardi skate through the dugout fence while making his way to the steps for a mound visit, but it gets old fast. Also, what's up with the camera panning to open field for a few seconds? I suppose it expects a player to be there or something. Happens at least once a game.

That's all for now. Please don't take these complaints as nitpicking or whining. I'd just like to see obvious issues get addressed in next years game. Currently, 2k9 has a ton of promise, but it's held back by a couple giant chains. With a patch to fix the AI aggressiveness, 2k9 will be highly playable. It's already a blast. But we don't want a good game, we want a GREAT game! Thanks, and I hope everyone else adds their own suggestions.

As you can see from the link above, some of Trevytrev's wishes came true last year. Joe and John were ditched in favor of much better commentators, zone (cursor) hitting made a comeback, stadiums are somewhat improved, and the "meatball" is gone forever. Other things weren't added or improved. I think an awesome idea that would impact gameplay is number 9- giving teams their own personalities. That's just cool. Other things, such as the All Star Weekend, will most likely not happen.

Honestly, if VC manages to get the game play quirks worked out and this game plays as realistically as possible, I'd love to have a "virtual ballpark tour." Unfortunately, I'm sure that will never happen.

While I'm at it, I may as well be nitpicky about something. The Yankees uniform looks terrible. It has way too many pinstripes that are too close together. But it's a minor gripe, because the game play comes first.

Crowd noise definitely needs to be improved. I played a 16 inning game, and even with crown volume maxed there wasn't enough noise. The Orioles cut my lead to 5-4 in the 16th and loaded the bases with no outs. Camden Yards should've been ready to explode. Instead, it sounded a bit bland. Then again, they are Orioles fans...

As long as I'm discussing atmosphere, I think celebrations need to be put back in. The winning team should meet near the mound to shake hands after the final out, just like in real life. And supposedly there's no World Series celebration. That's unacceptable with today's technology. Though, I understand much had to be sacrificed in order to improve frame rates.

Perhaps my biggest wish: test the game properly so game-killing bugs don't make it into the retail version. I don't care if you have to delay the game by a month. Just stop releasing buggy messes.

              Re: MLB 2k10 Wish List

How about adding the fix of the stat overlays for hitters that stated they led or are ranked the league in areas which they didnt (Triples, Doubles, Average, RBI's...etc)
For instance, while playing with the Angels,

Howie Kendrick was 13th in HR's
Kendry Morales was 13th in RBI's
Kendry Morales was 4th in 3B's
Mike Napoli was 7th in 3B's
Erik Aybar was 5th in AVG

And the worst of all having a fielder walk to the plate in a cut scene and saying he led even ranked the AL or NL in wins, saves...
              For Instance....

Vladamir Guerro was 11th in Wins last year
Torii Hunter was 4th in SV last year
Kenrdy Morals was 12th in SV last year
Chone Figgins was 3th in wins last year

Since this is part of the Presentation aspect I think this majorly fails especially when this should have been apparent with the Beta Testing, or pre-release testing. The Commentating with Thorne is well done and hasnt got old yet.... but he does call Travis Buck (3 year Pro) of the A's some name that isnt even close EVERYTIME he comes to bat, yet says his name correctly when he catches a fly ball

So in essence....what he said below:

The gap between NFL2K and Madden was never as wide as the gap between any VC/2K/Kush baseball title and any of its competitors.

I disagree. Technically speaking, VC has never directly developed a baseball game. It's always been a different company. Under the Sega Sports brand, WSB went through multiple developers. 2k1 was a disaster due to no control over fielding. 2k2 was produced by Blue Shift for Dreamcast and played a decent, but offensive heavy game. 2k3 was an absolute gem- the game produced extremely realistic results, but lacked in presentation. 2k4 I passed on due to a few subtle changes. Blue Shift was fired and Kush (a former subsidiary of Visual Concepts) took over for 2k5, which I though was alright, but definitely not as good as 2k3. 2k6 I skipped, and 2k7 was pretty horrible in my opinion. And then 2k8...

VC has, to some extent, brought this game back to its roots. Cursor hitting has returned, and everything feels closer to what it used to.

I'm not sure what everyone's fascination/obsession with the MVP series is. Personally, I never got into it. I guess it's just taste. But let me say this, I don't want EA taking over VC. After all, who's to blame for your precious MVP disappearing? Oh right, it was EA that bought up the NFL license, and 2k got back at them by buying the MLB license.

                      Re: MLB 2k10 Wish List

This is just based on the demo, but it seems to be pretty close to the final game from what I've read.

-Complete overhaul of non-signature animations. Add a bunch of generic batting stances, running styles, etc. so everyone doesn't look the same in the field or running the bases. Add as many throwing, catching, diving, collision animations as possible. Make the transitions smooth.

-Better hit detection between players and objects.

-An option to just have an old style base stealing system where you just queue up a steal.

-Real zone hitting. Keep cursor hitting though.

-Pitching that isn't so pinpoint. Come up with a system that even if a perfect pitch is thrown there's still a chance it will be slightly off target. Basically have the ratings matter more. If my pitcher has a low rating it should have an effect. How about instead of having a little ball showing me where I'm going to pitch you show a circle. If you throw a perfect pitch the ball is guaranteed to break somewhere within the circle. Pitchers with good accuracy get a smaller circle, and it would vary in size by which pitch you choose. And make this apply to CPU pitching too! The CPU feels like the can throw it wherever they want and only throws balls or hits a batter if they want to.

                      -No bugs!

-And of course the AI hitting, but I assume that's being worked on for this year and won't be a problem next year.

Great list, JBucc. I agree with everything you said, especially about the animations. I know it's a lot to ask for, but they either need to totally overhaul their animations (not gonna happen) or add hundreds of new transitions. Really, I think the animation stiffness simply stems from this engine being obsolete. But again, for 2k10, there are so many other issues that need to be worked on that it's probably not wise for a brand new engine at this point. That would open up a whole new can of worms (and bugs).

I have to wonder, based on VC's work with the NFL 2k series, are they going to introduce a totally new engine next year? They did it multiple times with NFL, so maybe they plan the same for baseball. I just hope the quality of this series reaches that of NFL 2k5. That would be baseball gaming heaven.

                          My wish for 2K10 . . .

                          Better Collision Detection

Better animations (I thought the DP animations in 2K8 were better)

Bring back STEP INFLUENCE for hitting

                          Bring back 2K8's 3-pt pitching!

Bring back the missing sliders from 2K8

Bring back the ability to edit player's stances and pitching deliveries

Bring back some of the on-screen info that was taken out (pitch count, hitter's info, etc)

Make it easier for us to see who's batting

Make it easier for us to see the opponent's lineup card

                          Just my early two cents.

how bout actually paying attention to players race... McCutchen is white in the game and Cahill is black. WHAT? And thats just 2 examples. Also get the rosters correct. Top prospects are in the FA pool i.e Jason Heyward, Rick Porcello, Matt LaPorta and others not to mention Carlos Carrascois on the Padres AAA team under a fake name. Outfields that actually catch the ball. Too many times i have been in the circle to catch it out there and either the outfielder moves on his own and misses it or he is in the circle and the ball just hits him. An option to slide? I havnt found that yet. Better sliders, the ones from 2k8.

MVP to me was by far the best baseball game ive ever played. If we can get EA to come back and make MVP again and make it like it was, id be in heaven

Cursor hitting is the #1 reason the early 2K baseball titles were HORRIFIC. In fact, the only saving grace I can remember from any previous gen 2K baseball title was the old K Zone pitching meter. Everything else about the series has been rank steaming garbage.

If you don't understand why everyone loves MVP, there's really no talking sense to you about any kind of sports games at all.

But to answer your question, who's fault is it? It's Take 2 Interactive's fault. The NFL approached EA and offered them the deal. If EA passed, T2I would have taken it. T2I then made the pettiest possible response that did nothing but push EA out of baseball. T2I acted like a god damned child to try to get back at EA and did nothing but screw over baseball fans.

It's a shame GameStop took over EBgames and changed their return policy, or I might be able to get my hard earned $60 for the garbage I just bought.
