anyone else blocked from buying the game by Wal Mart/Target?

I found MLB 2K11 at both Wal Mart and Target today and when I tried to buy it, the cash register wouldnt let them check it out to me. Bummer.

Yeah I believe the game is already in stock. I was talking to my mother who works in retail about it (I'll get a discount when I buy the game ) and she said that they got a shipment on Friday of games due out on Tuesday. I mentioned the name of the game and she said that she thinks the PS3 version is in the store already but doesn't know about X360.

    I'll find out tonight though.

Really? They wouldn't sell you a game before the release date? WTF kind of business model is that!?

      /sarcasm.

It's not released until Tuesday, so the registers block the sale until the street date. Not really surprising.

Same as with any street dated release, the registers lock out sales of those games until the actual release day.

I'm actually surprised there hasn't been more of the where/when stuff about this game yet - this is the first post I've seen about someone trying to get it early.

I received another email from Best Buy about my in store order this morning, warning me to pick up my game or else the order would be canceled.

The nice woman behind the counter processed my order and told me she needed to grab the game from the back. She came back, game in hand.

Seconds later, a teenage employee came running out to tell her the game comes out Tuesday. She told him she was going to just give me the game anyway since I was there.

He protested. A lot. She backed down and asked if I minded coming back Tuesday.

I would have had it if some 16 year old at his first job wasn't such a stickler for the rules.

Stinks too. I have tomorrow off.

That does stink, but the street date rules are more serious than they used to be. When a game gets sold early, it now generates a red flag that alerts the DM. A lot of people end up in trouble, and Best Buy pays a fine for the sale to 2K.

Basically, other stores would pitch a fit if Best Buy broke the street date, as it would eat into their sales. And if 2K, or any publisher, didn't harshly enforce the street date, then a lot of stores would order far fewer copies.

Interesting, was there one event that caused this to happen or just a bunch of little things that all added up to force them to take it more serious?

I would think that mom and pop stores would be selling it. Several copies of The Show have been sold and I believe these types of stores are where the guys have been buying it. Just surprised that we haven't seen copies of 2K11 like we have of the other game.

Wouldn't a game actually want stores to sell it early - that way if people were choosing between two competing games coming out on the same day (like with baseball this year), they might be tempted into buying whichever one they could get first?

I have often wondered why they don't release games early in that situation.

                        Funny thing...

Not only has Best Buy sent me an email thank me for picking up my game, but my credit card was charged. As far as Best Buy is concerned, I've picked up the game. Street date broken!

I'm excited to get my hands on this Tuesday. Kind glad my wife is out of town for a few days!

Are you kidding me! Some snot-nosed 16-year-old punk prevented you from getting the game? What's it to him if it's sold early? It's not his store.

You should have opened up a can on him.
It's on me. I shook his hand too hard. It was a hard ... kind of a slap-shake.

He was trying to impress the girl who was flirting with the guy by selling the game early... No?

Well just an update to my last post. The store my mother works at has the game......The PS3 version.

She says they may get the X360 version in tomorrow but if they don't i'll have to go scrounging around for it at other stores. I hope like heck I can find it as I couldn't find it AT ALL last year.
