Re: MLB 2K11 Roster Adjustments, Ratings and Accessories - MLB 2K Insider Will Check
Some pitchers like Baez of the Phillies are not given a four-seam fastball but a two-seam fastball when he/they throw both. Baez, for example, throws his four-seam fastball more than twice the two-seam fastball. Still, 2K has him with just a two-seam fastball.Comment

Its really not that hard to get it right. I also noticed that they gave pitchers pitches they used to throw like Ramon Ramirez of the Giants has a splitter but he hasn't thrown it since 08.Last edited by jack1535; 06-04-2011, 01:47 PM.Buffalo Bills

For you guys doing ratings adjustments or adding pitches, how are you determining control and movement ratings?Comment

Re: MLB 2K11 Roster Adjustments, Ratings and Accessories - MLB 2K Insider Will Check
I don't add pitches for that reason. I take away what shouldn't be there and replace it with one of his other pitches in the game. When it's speed, I just make that adjustment. There are times when another pitch could be added, but I don't do that because there's no concrete method known to me.Comment

Splitter like 2K, fastballs are not broken up.

No Splitter, two-seam instead.
Stange, huh? Is it 1) FB, FT, SF 2) FB, FT 3) FT, SF or 4) FB, SF?Comment

I don't know what you're doing and I don't really care. FanGraphs clearly distinguishes between his (Danys Baez) 4-seam fastball and 2-seam fastball, and frequency as well. http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfx.asp...367&position=PComment

Splitter and just fastball (not defined 2-seam or 4-seam). The two fangraphs Pitch Type and Pitch F/X pages often contradict each other (remember Ubaldo?). My point is, you have three algorithms classifying ball movement by different methods (the third being Inside Edge). That the Pitch F/X results you love to preach as gospel can't even identify Baez as having a splitter (perhaps treating it as a 2-seam?) shows it's clearly fallible and really, this whole thing subjective.Comment

For me it is quite simple in the link I posted. I sometimes also check Texas Leaguers Pitch F/X. I am only concerned with 2008 to 2010.
There is no confusion that I see. TexasLeaguers Pitch F/X confirms what FanFraphs shows for pitch type (no splitter): http://pitchfx.texasleaguers.com/pit...o=6%2F9%2F2011
Neither FanGraphs or TexasLeaguers show a splitter for Baez. 2k gives him a splitter in the game.Comment

Neither FanGraphs or TexasLeaguers show a splitter for Baez. 2k gives him a splitter in the game.
Splitter Effectiveness: 0.57 runs above average
Splitter Usage: 28.9%
Splitter Velocity: 89.9 mph
Splitter Movement: 2.0 inches right to left, 4.2 inches down
Because fewer pitchers throw splitters than sliders, curves, or changeups, you can see that the value of the 10th-best splitter is much lower than the 10th-best version of those other pitches.
After missing all of 2008 with arm problems, Baez has returned this season throwing his splitter about five times more often than before.
It has some cutting action to it with a fair amount of drop.
Since Baez is throwing the pitch far more often than he ever has, batters are perhaps being slow to adjust to his new splitter-heavy style.
Also, did you bother to click on my link to Fangraphs? They have two distinct pages showing Pitch Types and Pitch F/X results. They often contradict each other. Like in Baez's case...

Note he's thrown it his entire career and 11% of his pitches this year. SF = Split-Finger if you have issues reading the breakdown.Last edited by VC_Plant; 06-10-2011, 03:35 PM.Comment

This is the last thing I'll say on Baez: He throws a four-seam fastball and throws it more than his two-seam fastball, but in the game he does not have a four-seam fastball. Thus, he should have a four-seam fastball in the game--and that/this is addressed to whoever wants this kind of information.Comment

Yadier Molina of the Cardinals is rated Contact 73 against lefties and 72 against righties. The three-year split stats (2008-2010) for Molina are .262 against lefties and .295 against righties according to ESPN baseball site. So, it doesn't look like Molina's ratings are accurate. According to the splits, Molina should be much better against right-handed pitchers.
If you just go by 2010 season, Molina was .281 against righties and .217 against lefties.Comment
