Man! Does anyone else remember this game?

If you haven't played it, you need to find yourself a copy (they're cheap) and see how AWESOME this game was! It had lots of the little things that made you say "Wow, that's so cool!" when playing! Honestly, HH was always my choice of baseball games for it's realism, but since I've moved to ESPN, it would be nice if Sega would actually use this game. The player graphics and animations were REALLY GOOD in this game! Some of it's best features:

Batter/Pitcher interface
Player models
Signature batting and throwing stances (Remember Batista of the Oriole's stance? Or Bagwells?)
UNPARALLELED team/stadium specific animations

The last one was just too good. I mean, they had the Milwaukee mascot sliding down after a HR, and the boats in SF bay fighting it out after Barry launched one.

Man, this title was a total blast. If only they made it with the quality that they're putting into sports games now, it would honestly be a LOCK for best baseball game....

I loved that game wasnt it out only for gc. THe graphics were awesome there were the best id seen at that time and the animations were awesome i wish they would have continued to make that game.

I hadn't played it yet, but I always wanted to... why did or didn't people like it? Well, actually I know why people liked it, but why DIDN'T they? Was it too arcadey?

I loved the game, thought it was great. Amazing batting stances, in my opinion the greatest superstar batting stances I've ever seen. Same with signature windups, just uncanny. It wasn't perfect, of course, no fantasy draft, only 5 roster spots outside of the main 25, not many free agents in the game, etc, so it was hard to keep the rosters current. Also the pitch speed was a little slow for my taste, and the batting cursor wasn't something you could toggle on or off. People complained about it being too arcadey, but there were different playing levels and sliders as well, and that really affected the way the game played. The game was beat up in reviews, but that was more than likely because the reviewers just played it for 5 minutes and didn't bother exploring many of the features. It also has one of the best home run derbies I've seen. I always liked WOW's baseball engine vs. the one Sega currently uses, Blue Shift. Take a look at the official site, it's pretty cool:

Here's what Sega SHOULD do: Take the Home Run King engine. Update the rosters obviously, and new ballparks. Give us a few more signature batting and pitching motions. Bump up rosters to 40-man, plus create any MLBPA free agents. Allow the behind-the-pitcher view to actually be used (they have it in CPU vs. CPU, it's great to look at!). Allow the hitting cursor to be toggled on or off. And FINALLY, release it on all platforms, and I think you have one heck of a game. The competition is getting fierce, clearly from the early build movies games like MLB 2005 on the PS2 look much improved, as does ASB. If WSB is just touting K-zone and really driven on first-person baseball, well, there are plenty of other options.

One more thing on the HRK engine - THQ came out with Baseball Advance on the GBA over a year ago, and it uses a bare-bones engine from this game. It's a GREAT handheld baseball game, and why they never released a sequel is beyond me. I still play it when I travel for work! I even emailed THQ about it and they only responded by sending me a link to the new NGAGE baseball game, which is awful.

Never got to play this game. Though there was an almost cult following. Some said HR Kings is what WSB 2k1 should have been.
