I think it only occurs when you correctly guess the pitch and location. If you don't play with guessing pitches then I think it does not occur.
Also, I just noticed on the game informer preview:
Quoute:
"If you’re really struggling and end up throwing a terrible pitch right over the plate, the game will zoom in on your pitch and highlight it in green, indicating that you’ve just pitched a telegraphed ball for the batter to knock into the seats."
So this is their version of a mistake pitch like mvp. I am not a fan of the zooming in and making a celebration of the mistake pitch. Especially if there is a green glow around the ball as it is coming to the plate! I hope this can be turned off as well! I am also assuming that this and slam zone are two seperate things.“The saddest part of life is when someone who gave you your best memories becomes a memory”Comment

So, yes, you can choose to use SlamZone even if the option is on. You don't have to guess the location of the pitch every at-bat.
What I hope, however, is that SlamZone isn't the only way to hit homeruns or get extra-base hits. I have faith in SEGA, but I've experienced too many situations where a company adds a feature like this (cough*EA and analog swinging*) and the only way to hit a homeruns is to either hold up and and in or to use the Power Swing.
I also absolutely hate the Power Swing option in video games. Never used it in ESPN games and luckily could still hit homeruns at a normal rate - which basically tells me you don't need the Power Swing, right?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: A few problems you've noticed so far
Originally posted by CardotIt seems that many baesball games struggle with the suspense factor. In ASB05, a batter would rip one down the line, and the announcer would immediately announce a foul ball. Moments later the ball would land 1 inch foul in the outfield. The most exiting moments in baseball are the anticipation on the long balls....will it clear the fence? Will it curve inside the foul pole??? I would like to see video games captilize on this a little more.
and as far as home runs... how many homers in video games arent "no doubters" that DONT clear the fence by at least 10-15 rows??? ive been playing asb and am now in my second season and have seen maybe... 10 balls that were not no doubt shots.
what do you want the homers to all be 'dramatic" and either/or?? that isnt realistic... most home runs in real life are blasts that are no doubters...Comment

Re: A few problems you've noticed so far
You read my mind. What else spoils it are those damn camera angles. The "ball landing marker" goes right to the wall and since we cant see the ball flight, there is NO suspense as we can tell its gone.
Every year the cameras are the one thing I ask about, and only HH let users define the camera. WHY must there only be the standard low, medium, high??? Without seeing ball flight, its just my guy chasing around the ball shadow all day with no suspense on towering hits, etc. zzz...zzz....zzz...Comment
