    Take-Two drops ESPN name early

Reps for the publisher confirm that it is dropping the "ESPN" from its upcoming baseball game, now called "Major League Baseball 2K5."

Looks like it's just gonna be Major League Baseball 2K5

Wow, bold move. Especially with it being exactly a month away from release, that could really cramp their marketing of the product.

Why not go back to what it SHOULD be... World Series Baseball?

Why should it be World Series Baseball? That was Sega's flagship baseball product, but now it's Take-Two's. Using the 'Major League Baseball' name in it makes the game much more marketable. You can't count on gamers from years ago being your primary base.

Its bold, but a very intelligent move. Now in the upcoming games of 2007 series. EA can't capitalize on the ESPN name and won't get the popularity points out .....hopefully they will just remain 2k games or finally pick up Fox Sports for the rest of the 2k series games....so far the baseball will just be MLB 2K5.

Nothing wrong with that....smart move Take-Two! Let EA have the ESPN name now...so they can't mess things up for the next year generation of sports titles.

Why? Because now you have a Major League Baseball 2k5 and a MLB 2005. When you abbreviate them you have MLB 2k5 and MLB 2005. Not exactly a move that strives for distinction.

Who's doing the abbreviating, though? If it's just us fans short-cutting it as 'MLB 2K5', no biggie. If Take-Two says they're going to use 'Major League Baseball 2K5', then they should do that. What matters ultimately is what is on the box. Also, I have faith that a lot of gamers are able to differentiate between competitive products, by what the boxes look like and who is labeled as the publisher on the front of the box.

You guys don't have to worry about anything. They still use the "2K" name and as long as they still use the "2K" in their name people will know the difference.

VC can drop the ESPN name because they made ESPN respectable not the other way around. Besides dropping it this early will keep EA from cashing in on it. I'm sure if they did this to the Baseball game that they will do it to all the others too.

I would like them to make a deal with Fox Sports but to keep what ESPN just did from happening again I'm sure they won't be making any deals with networks anytime soon.
