    Let's talk Baserunning

It's in the manual, but it's hard to get used to. It's such a different concept than other console games we've played. I'm still fighting it, but slowly getting the handled.

It appears that you control the lead runner. For example, if there's a guy on first and there is a hit into the alley you will see your guy on first (his window) pulsing. As it's not really clear to me, if I just continue to control this lead runner and, say advance him to third, or even home if the ball goes to the wall, will the CPU take care of the trailing runner, or will he always stop at first?

How do you guys see it?

Ok, its pretty difficult imo. But this is how I've got it so far... the triggers on X-Box advance and retreat all runners... When you select a runner by pressing the according button, you can then advance/retreat them with the right and left arrows...

The area I keep screwing up is the speed burst. A is speed burst, however A is also the runner out of the batters box, so if you have a man on 2b and you hit the ball, by using the speed burst you are actually taking control of the hitter and deciding his actions. The lead runner is left up the cpu and often doesn't move on his own. So this often results in ugly base running. So the trick is, don’t use speed burst until you've set everyone destination...

At least that’s how I understand it...

well, all i know is this. I'm confused as well sometimes, and i ended up with the funniest situation before. Jeter at the plate with Womack on 1st. Hit into the alley and i guess i fumbled the runner advancing a bit. What ended up happening is that i had Womack finally advancing, but Jeter only about 2 steps behind him. What ensued was that i sent both runners all the way around the bases. THrow to the plate just arrives with Womack so he's safe, catcher gets barreled over, and Jeter trips over both of them and safe for an inside the park HR i guess?

odd and funny to say the least

If there's anyone who has this down I'd like to hear from you. I find myself watching the baserunning windows when I should be watching where the ball is. It should be natural to advance the runners without having to watch the windows, but man.......

I think I'll play game on ROOKIE and up my hitting, lower the CPUS ratings, and see if I can get some practice in.

                Here's the deal...

You have to know who you are controlling at all times.

Baserunners are assigned the button of the corresponding base that they are on. So...a guy on 2nd is the Y button. If you only want to incrase the man on second's lead off the bag, press Y and then tap the left trigger.

If you want to automatically steal use the directional pad and point towards the base you want to steal. If you point towards third and you have a man on second he won't move.

If you want ALL the runners to advance press the white button
If you want ALL the runners to hold, press the black button

As for the runner speed burst. A isn't the speed burst button. Pressing the runner's corresponding button is the speed burst for that runner. So if you want to execute the hit and run, swing with A, and then start tapping B repeatedly.

It is pretty confusing, but as I've gotten more used to it, I've been able to execute some great baserunning. In my opinion, it's something that is pretty intuitive but because baserunning has been a pretty ignored part of baseball video games, it is taking people some time to come to grasps with it.

If you control one runner will the CPU automatically control the others?

I have already run myself out of a few games by not knowing how to control these baserunners. It is so new that I guess I can't get the handle on it. For example, Aramis Ramirez is on second and Corey Patterson is at the plate. Patterson scorches a ball in the alley and I have Ramirez come on home to score. However, Patterson continues to keep running all the way into a force-out a third (or on his way to home). I think I have figured out that you have to push the trigger button once for each base to move up (or back), but it just seems a lot harder than it should be. I'm playing on All-Star level so baserunners are at a premium. Any help is appreciated.

Like I said...it's really tricky to get used to.

Once you do...it's very intuitive and you can pull off great running plays regularly. I'm still working on it myself, but with good steals, slides, and lead-offs at the right times I've managed to do pretty well.
