CPU able to lay down a bunt?!?!?

It's a little thing, depending on who you aks.

But I've noticed that after playing many ganes and watching many more, that the CPU is very incompetent at bunting.

What I mean is that ev'time the CPU tries to bunt someone over to 2nd or 3rd, the bunt is hit so hard and the pitch scoops it up so fast (it's never been the catcher that's had to feild a bunt) that he is always able to throw the lead runner out at second or third.

What slider can help fix this? I want the CPU to bunt better!!!

Re: CPU able to lay down a bunt?!?!?

I’ll tell you what I’m finding as I tweak player ratings: they are way, way off. First, all P’s except gold glovers need ALL their fielding ratings lowered to between 1-10, including arm strength and accuracy (which doesn’t affect pitching, only fielding throws).

Same goes for most infielder ratings by the way, and the cool thing is it slows the throwing animations down and they look much, much better.

Players’ bunting for hits ratings will probably need serious tweaking to (hopefully) get them to bunt properly and aim their bunt more. But think about it: the 3B and 1B guy don’t charge grounders (broken game play problem) so maybe this was the last minute, rush the game out fix – program the batter to bunt up the middle each time. Who knows? Only continued ratings edits and testing will tell…

I zeroed out CPU bunt sliders and hit and run, because CPU is bunt obsessed otherwise. And he's pretty effective against me, in part because he does it in unpredictable situations. Way too much CPU bunting.

I just ran three 3 inning games CPU vs CPU with the Hit and Run slider @ 45 and Sac Bunt slider @ 65. I had maybe 7-8 bunts, including one where the 1B came in got tangled up with the P, and the batter ended safe on first with no throw. More important, the batter moved the runner up each time. Now I do have individual fielding ratings way down, so that probably contributed to the bunting success.

I agree for the most part, they usually make for easy outs at 2nd or 3rd. But in a recent game Jose Reyes laid down a picture perfect suicide squeeze in the bottom of ninth in a tied game. Most painful videogame loss I've had in a long while. Just nothing you can do about it when the runner takes off as soon as you throw and the bunt is perfect the run scored about the time I reached the ball.

                    interstesting observations...

                    baa7,

what did you do with feilder ratings, lower ev'one by an average of 5-10 points and then lower all pitchers to a total of 1- 10? The throwing animations improve, huh? Slowing them down would be good b/c the CPU always seem to throw runners out by a mile. How long did it take you to lower ev'one ratings, about an hour or two?

Yeah, they bunt up the middle too much but I sawe a suicide squueze where they did bunt to the left side of the infield (would've been safe had they bunted to the right, but I can't remember if pitcher throwing was a lefty or righty).

I’m working with one team only at the moment, and playing them against themselves. I lowered everyone’s fielding ratings – everything, including Arm and Accuracy – to below 10. I did this with NFL 2K5, and just like that game, I’m seeing all sorts of new things: different game play and animations. No more 2B lasers to the 1B guy, and you can actually make out the throwing motions; 1B guy pulled off the bag on the throw from the SS, runner safe; 90% of the hits up the middle get by the P; two very close plays @ 1 from throws by the 3B guy, both outs by a whisker; a 6-4-2 DP attempt, runner just safe (I’ve also raised individual Speed ratings up).

Something else I started seeing: bunts down both lines. Before all this editing, I don’t believe I saw any bunts along the lines. They all headed straight towards the P… but that could be a coincidence.

And the slo-mo loopy web gems to the infielders aren’t as frequent, partly because the low Anticipation rating seems to freeze the guy for a moment, so they don’t react instantly.

Once I get a handle on how much these ratings affect individual player and position-specific game play, I’ll start raising some of the infielders back up to where an average guy should be and can be without being too good. But the P’s are going to stay in the 10 range. Their default ratings are simply way, way too high.
