I found out why players continue running around the basepaths!

And it took me just now to realize it.

When you're running to first (or second, or third, or whatever), you can pre-determine your desired path, which is of course the problem.

As you're running to first, if you pull the L-trigger once, look in your baserunner window, and you will most likely see a 2, meaning you predetermined your player to go to second base. If you press L again, you will see a 3, and if you press it again, you will see an H. So, basically, you can predetermine your runner to round all of the bases before you even reach first base. So 3 clicks of the L-trigger while rounding the bags just may make you run all the way.

The problem is, if you accidentally pressed it more than you wanted to, there are only three ways to stop to what you desired to stop at:

    1) Press R while running to 1st base to reduce the amount of bases you want to go. If you do this while going to any other base, you'll run back to the previous bag.

    2) Slide into a bag, then he will finally stop.

    3) Round the bag, and run back.

I hope this makes a little more sense now.

Re: I found out why players continue running around the basepaths!

I literally practiced all this for two days, just to get it down. The only thing I'm not good at yet is stopping my guy on second from stupidly auto-running to third when the ball's hit. My guy on second always takes off on his own, without me sending him, even if first base is open. If it's a grounder to third, the 3B guy tags my runner out every time. I can never remember to quickly pull the R trigger the moment I hit the ball when I have a runner at second -- so I can manually send him to third if I choose.

Great....the base running has been killing me too....I do believe there's also an option in the main set-up that let's the CPU control all but the main base runner if you don't take control....Set it to auto.....It won't control your main base runner but all the others till you tap the button to take control...However you still have to be real carefully with that "L" trigger...it can be brutal !!!!!

        Thanks for the help.....

            mrmorning,

That's what I've done. I usually don't worry about the lead runners, for the most part, as the AI does a good job of moving them. I try to concentrate first on the batter. It sure was frustrating in the beginning, that's for sure.

Re: I found out why players continue running around the basepaths!

There's a couple other controls you left out......

Pressing left on the digital pad once will advance all runners by one base, twice will queue up two bases, and so on. Pressing right once will cancel out one of those presses, and if all of them are cancelled, will return all runners.

The baserunning gave me a lot of trouble at first, but I'm getting the hang of it. One thing that's become routine for me is to ALWAYS queue up second base with the L1 button when I can see I've got a clean base hit to the outfield. That way the runner rounds first aggressively and puts himself in position to take an extra base, instead of turning outside the baseline and stopping. If the outfield handles the play well (which obviously will happen most of the time), I can easily retreat back to first with R1. If you watch the CPU play, you can see that it does the exact same thing on base hits.

Always take control of the lead runner he is usually the Y botton I think. Tell him how for to run and then switch to the next runner which I believe is B. Tell him how many base to take and so on and so on...but all the base runners have icons that corresponed with bottons. Thats how I control my baserunners.

What I mean is that people were complaining that their runners would just continue to round bases without stopping... it's because they pressed L (or left on the D-pad) one or two too many times. Here is the reason why, and it's because the game has those predetermine controls.

Did anyone really not have this figured out less than 3 hours of owning this game ???

Seriously..... there is BIG white numbers in each window that shows what base you have selected your runner to go to. Took me like 4 games to get it down pat.

And you dont have to slide to stop at a particualr base either. Say you have a runner going from 1st to 2nd , but you accidentally hit the trigger too many times and youve sellected the runner to go to 3rd. Just hit the R trigger one time and the "3" in the runner window will turn to "2" and your runner will stop. Basically whatever the WHITE number in the baserunner window says is where the runner will stop. No matter what base your going to.

Myself, I first tell the lead runner where to go then I tell the hitter where to go. Whoever needs some speed boost is who I start clicking on. Its second nature now.
