It was def. an outing I needed. I'm still 17 GB with 33 games to go so its pretty much over for me. I am even 13.5 GB from the wild card. On the bright side, my minor league system seems to be going as expected. My AAA, AA, and A sqauds are rated 11th, 16th, and 2nd respectively (they started the year 15, 17, and 4th). Def. a step in the right direction imo. I may not compete until 07-08 because my pitching staff needs an immense amount of work (starters ERA: 6.33) and may take 2-3 seasons to fully develop a respectible staff that will compete in the NL east.
Well Hitstreak, sounds like you got something to look forward to. Isn't it fun as you get near the end of the year you start looking forward to the off-season, especially when you know what positions you need to fill. Keep it up!

Well, I completed my opening series against Toronto. I went 1-2 in the series, winning the third game. I told ya'll about game 1 extra innings loss, well game 2 wasn't even close. I actually was leading the game 3-1 until the 6th when it all fell apart. Game 3 was a nail-biter up until the end when I was able to push across a runner to win 6-5.

Before I go and start my series with Oakland (I think I'll be lucky to have 20 wins before the all-star break) I got a question for ya'll. Do ya think I should do like the Yankees and go to a 3 man pitching rotation? Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

      Re: Owner Mode

I wouldn't go with a 3 man rotation personally because it would be completely unrealistic as your 3 starters will have 50 starts each. However, its your franchise and if you feel that is the best case scenario, then by all means go for it. How is your franchise going? Im going to update tonight after work.

I started with the ones from mvp mods earlier this year with updated contracts, managers, etc. I have played about 7 games since my last update because I have been incredibly busy. This game is extremely fun once you really get toward the end.

            Major Bump.

Anyone still playing owner mode out there? Hitstreak, you ever finish the Nats season? Recently I've gotten back into owner mode because of the strategic part of it, and while my team sucks(around 18-32), it's still pretty fun. I've been splitting my time between 2k10 and owner mode on MVP. To sum up my team, we can't score and the pen can't keep a lead.

Hey whats up Duke. I actually have gone back to mvp 05 because I just couldn't get into MLB 10 the show. Not saying its a bad game, but it just can't compete with the strategic aspect of the MVP IMO.

I am in fact in year 2. I finished 70-92 in year 1 which obviously did not make the playoffs. I just looked at my spreadsheet and I actually finished with $4,658,555 in the red which really messed me up during FA signings. I had to cut my payroll from $55 million orginally to $33 million year 2. As of right now, I am 19-19. No power though (22 team HR) but I did focus on my pitching which includes: Scott Olsen, a much improved Jason Bergmann, Jordan Zimmerman, Strasburg (whom i drafted and edited), and a serviceable Ross Detwiler.

I focused on speed and defense during the off-season since I really couldn't afford big time guys. Kyle Blanks has 6 Bombs, Adam Dunn has 7 HR, and Ryan Zimmerman has 5 (thats 18 out of my 22 bombs ). Fans are starting to come in so that helps. I am only $2.6 million in the red now. With 4.5 GB from the Mets (who lost to the Angels in year 1's world series) I am in the market for a potential bullpen arm and perhaps take a chance on a power bat.

                Re: Owner Mode

Just played an 11 inning game against the Giants in which I won 3-2 on Adam Dunn's walk off bomb into the right field seats. That win snapped a 7 game losing streak. After an abysmal 70-92 season in year 1, I actually put together a solid squad in season 2. Although my payroll is a league low $33 million, I have guys who can do a bit of everything. I have Christian Guzman hitting a respectable .281, 6 RBIs, 12 R, 5 SBs, and a .370 OBP at the top of my lineup, Jesus Flores who has caught 33% of base runners and is hitting .308. Even Willie Harris is hitting only .242, but has contributed with timely hits (9 RBI's in 15 starts).

Pitching has been pretty solid as well. Scott Olsen is 2-3 with a 4.56 ERA, 24 K's, 15 BBs in 8 starts, Chien Ming Wang (yes, I signed him) is 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA, 27 K's, 10 BB but is on the 15 day DL, Jason Bergmann is 3-3 with a 3.75 ERA, 30 K's, 12 BBs, and Joel Hanrahan has converted 7 of 8 Save opportunities and actually leads the majors with batters hitting only .141 against him.

Here are the standings in year 2 NL (as always, play every single game):
                NL West
                Dodgers 25-14 0 GB
                D-Backs 23-17 2.5 GB
                Padres 17-23 8.5 GB
                Rockies 16-22 8.5 GB
                Giants 15-23 9.5 GB

                NL Central
                Cubs 26-12 0 GB
                Cardinals 21-17 5 GB
                Brewers 20-18 6 GB
                Pirates 19-20 7.5 GB
                Astros 17-22 9.5 GB
                Reds 16-23 10.5 GB

                NL East
                Mets 24-16 0 GB
                Nationals 20-19 3.5 GB
                Braves 20-19 3.5 GB
                Phillies 17-23 7 GB
                Marlins 15-23 8 GB

I actually feel I have a chance as opposed to last year. I dont have too much sock on offense but if I can get a bullpen arm (which i failed to do so last year), a bat (Blanks turned out nicely), and perhaps a starter I can really wreak some havock on the NL East this year.

Nice to see you still playing it. Sucks about the 70-92 finish last year, but I guess you can't expect much better from that Nats team(sorta like my reds team).

Wow, suprised you are above .500 considering your $33M payroll, must've take some lessons from the Florida Marlins  That's cool to see you think you have a shot at competing, seems very hard to do in owner mode(which makes it fun).

I know I have no chance this year as the reds. I'm just looking to shed payroll and maybe pick up some mlb ready prospects if possible. I'm going to wait as long as possible though, because I want to try and gain as much money as I can from the media and tv before shipping away some higher priced players. I'm not looking to trade away guys like Arroyo, Harang or Dunn, but I want to shed some of the lower salary guys(around 2 or 3 M) like Hatteberg or Jeff Conine. I'm also contemplating trading away Kyle Lohse, whose in his last year of his contract but is having a great year so far. He's the only one I could really get a few solid prospects for, so it definitely has to be considered.

I haven't been able to get in a game since last time, but today and tomorrow I plan to play some games. I just don't want to see anyone come out of my bullpen, only way I can win a game it seems.

Edit: Forgot to ask. You said you've started to get fans to come out to the park. How many fans would you say you average per game now?

I am actually averaging about 12,200 fans per game (10,833 last year). Because of my poor perfornace in year 1, I was not able to upgrade any seating which was clearly unfortunate. As of right now, I am about $1.5 million in the red with 3 more home games. Chances are I will finish the series in the red. At 20-20 now and still 3.5 GB, I really need to upgrade my club. Since my daily revenues are only $33,000/game (not a typo), I really have to make sound financial decisions.

I wrote earlier that I am in a 3 year rebuilding phase. Year 1, I stockpiled my farm system via trades and draft while also signing solid minor league coaches to help with their development (My Single A, Double A, and Triple A squads are ranked 2,5, and 9 respectively). Year 2 is where I focused more on improving the MLB club through veteran trades and savvy FA signings in order to allow my players to develop in the minors while also fielding a competitive team. Year 3 is the point of no return. Thats where many of the players I obtained in year 1 will start seeing the field. If the move pays off, I may have a competitive club for 3-4 rock solid years on a payroll maxing out at $50 million. If they fail, I perhaps set back the franchise 4-5 years because I would then have to repeat the process.

Sucks you weren't able to upgrade your seating. I did some projections and found that I'd have enough money to get the 2nd level of seats in about a month, but I haven't figured out if that would end up putting me in the red at the end of the year. I've been getting about the same attendance as you did the first year(I would love for that 12,200 you're getting now, but I'd have to put together a half decent team for that ).

Edit: It wasn't the seating I was thinking about, it was the upgraded scoreboard. Definitely can't afford the seating.

Wow, your daily revenue is low. That's gotta be tough trying to survive on that.

I was lucky enough to inherit such a good farm system being the reds. I'd say I'm on the same plan as you, because I have most of my prospects ETA being 2007 which is the third year. Although I wouldn't doubt if it were to be the 4th year where they were all ready to put it together.

I did play two games yesterday, both against the Astros. First game was vs Roy Oswalt. I was able to get to him and score 5 off of him. It's just too bad my pitching sucks, Lance Berkman took me deep 3 times this game leading the Astros to a 10-5 win. 2nd game I lost 9-2, ending a terrible month of may at 7-22.

I have an Owner Mode that's been dormant for a few years and your guys' posts have gotten me excited to play MVP again lol. Quick question though: what do your guys' sliders look like?

If I remember correctly, I played very close to All-Star default with some minor adjustments.

Believe it or not, I actually alter my sliders depending on various factors such as the ballpark I'm at and whos pitching. If Brandon Webb is pitching against me in Arizona, not only do I make the sliders more hitter friendly, but I edit the sliders for the pitcher as well so Webb can really give me a run for my money. Conversly, If im at Dodger Stadium and playing against Chad Billingsley, I will make the sliders less hitter friendly and lower the sliders for the CPU pitcher so he will then throw more balls, more pitches, more walks, etc.

Here's my sliders. I wouldn't say I'm that good at the game though, so if you are good at it these might be a little easy for you. I don't even remember the last time I hit a homerun, I keep moving up the power slider to no avail though. I just chalk it up to my horrible team(except Dunn who should hit some, but he doesn't seem to want to).

They're not perfect, but they're good enough for me. I am probably going to be raising some of the injury sliders and probably raise the user power slider(because I haven't hit a HR with these yet) but the rest of it I'm pretty satisfied with.

Good luck with finding the right sliders, and don't be afraid to do some tweeking of your own(if you have time) because that's what got me to my set.

Reading through this has gotten me interested in picking this game back up.

Quick question for you franchise fellas

How is the progression system and are you rewarded for trying to develop young players?

I'd really love to find some current rosters for this on the PS2, because the owner mode has pretty much been unrivaled even to this current day.

I used Kraws 08 (mvpmods) rosters and just updated some of them myself in 09 before I started my owner mode. Won't start over anymore because I know I will never finish more than a season if I do.

Ok, so I'm now 21-21 after beating the Dodgers. Scott Olsen threw his 5th solid start of the season, going 6 strong innings, allowing 2 runs, 5 hits, 4 K's, and 2 BBs. Unfortunately, Saul Rivera blew the save by giving up a solo shot to Matt Kemp in the bottom of the 9th inning with 2 outs (thats what happens when you fall behind). I decided to give Hanrahan the day off as he had pitched 3 straight games (bad move). However, I was able to strike out Casey Blake to end the inning tied at 3. During the top half of the 10th, I wasted no time. Christian Guzman led off the inning with a double just inside the right field line against Jonathon Broxton. After I sacrifised him over with Ron Belliard, Josh Willingham hit his 2nd HR of the year into the left field pavilion (missed 23 games due to injury). Thats all I needed as I used Joe Beimel and Garret Mock to close the door.

I am a bit surprised I am 21-21. I think hiring the right pitching coach does matter. I had a horrible year last year as I finished 70-92 with a team ERA of 5.11 (played EVERY game even though I knew I was out of contention). This year, I have a little less pop, but my team ERA is 3.66 which has kept me in most games. At 4 GB now, I am starting to believe that I am truly 1 solid SP and a power bat away from really making a run at the wild card (and maybe the division if the Mets collapse )

I must make sure that my upgrades make financial sense. Since I only make $33,000 of revenues per game, I must evaluate whether my added on payroll will off-set the increased revenue I will recieve. In other words, I cannot afford a player who will increase my payroll by 15% if my daily revenues will increase by only 3-4% because that would truly set me back financially.
