Tony Gwynn vs Ichiro Suzuki. Who's the better pure hitter

I'm going with Gwynn right now BUT that could change in the next couple of years.

It's gotta be Gwinn. I love Ichiro... but if you give him average speed... his BA drops a good 20 points IMO.

I agree. That's definitely not taking away from his raw hitting ability, but those infield hits rack up with his incredible speed.

Let us not forget that from 24 to 29, Gwynn was averaging over 30 steals a season, including three seasons of 37, 56 and 40.

Ichiro is probably a better hitter, but more informal. Ergo, Gwynn is a better pure hitter. His hits are legitimate (not to say infield hits are illegitimate, but I'm going by a boxscore perspective on what a single is).

              Tony Gwynn

Also here's something that puts Gwynn ahead in my books. I think Gwynn would be a GREAT hitting coach because he has so much baseball knowledge inside him. He had probably the best swing of any player in the last 20 or so years. (Wade Boggs and John Olerud in his younger years are close)

Ichiro wouldn't make a great hitting coach IMO because he has an unorthodox approach and most of his hits are of the infield variety. It's kind of hard to take an unorthodox approach and teach it to others.

Re: Tony Gwynn vs Ichiro Suzuki. Who's the better pure hitter

I am biased as Tony Gwynn is my all-time favorite player. But I have yet to see a pure hitter like him. Barry Bonds himself has said Gwynn is the one player he would pay to see play.

Too bad the strike killed the '94 season. He was hitting .394 and his average was rising going in to the strike.

If you can play 20 years of major league baseball, and never hit below .309 and have a .338 lifetime average, it's pretty tough to top. Not to mention 9 batting titles.

Sports, you know Gwynn took over as the SDSU baseball coach right?

Yes i'm aware of that but since I don't follow college baseball I don't know how well the school has played since Gwynn joined up. Maybe you can enlighten me on that. I still think that Gwynn would make a great hitting coach somewhere in the big leagues and perhaps even as a manager.

They played a pretty tough schedule and struggled out of the gate. But they have been playing well in conference play. He's done a good job there. I went to a hitting school where he was an instructor one year when I was in HS, he has a great knack for getting what he's trying to teach you about hitting across so it's very easy to understand.

Tony Gwynn. The guy would watch every at bat to see what he did wrong and how to improve. He would watch film like nobody's business. He was truly a student of the art of hitting.

Gwynn. I won't regurgitate the reasons previously stated justifying my opinion.

Gwynn. Ichiro could pass Gwynn in my book, but he's got about 10 more productive years to do so.

Are you comparing Gwynn with his career over and with Ichiro still years to play?

I think it's much eaiser to go with Gwynn because his career is over and all the numbers are on the table, but don't count out Ichiro.

While their styles are very different, you need to compare them to similar players. I would compare Ichiro more with Rod Carew than Gwynn.

If you want just pure-hitting stat laid out between Gwynn and Ichiro, you just compare their season averages and see who comes out on top.
