Re: How 'bout that Darin Erstad

Yeah He has that big knee brace, That doesn't give him the flexibility to hookslide and to slide head first into the shingaurd isn't a good idea for Erstad.

So he had one option see movement, see the ball in the catchers glove...COLLISION.

Erstad was 100% justified in taking out that catcher. Just like Jermaine Dye was a few years ago when he hit benji and last year when Torii Hunter broke Molinas wrist on a collision at home plate.

Great play. Always want to see a player knock the wind out the catcher. You block the plate, you're just asking for it. I bet many Angels fans were shouting "Take him out!"..and even more were screaming a sentence filled with expletives.

Fosse was at least fully blocking the plate when Rose took him. It was the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning the Rose scored, so it wasn't meaningless. Everyone loves how Rose played hard for 27 outs, sprinting to first base on a walk, and running hard through first on the weakest ground out to second, yet you expect him to turn it off in certain situations. That isn't how the man is built and what made him a Hall of Fame caliber player.

On to the topic at hand......

I couldn't agree with RattDaddee more. This is an opinionated topic that doesn't have a right or wrong answer. That being said, Erstad did have the plate and decided to go up the line to take Estrada out. My biggest and only problem with Erstad on this play is the fact that his momentum didn't carry him over the plate. If it did he would have been totally justified in putting his shoulder into Estrada. He plowed through him and was no where close to the plate when the play was over with.

Estrada wasn't even on the plate when Erstad hit him. He had to turn out of the baseline to even hit him. He also went for the head not the glove. Its a legal play, but it wasn't necessary. And in Erstad's first at bat tonight Ramirez throws at him. Atta Boy Horacio!

If Horacio really threw at Erstad, thats a ***** thing to do. In fact, he probably should've been tossed right then.

There would be no reason whatsoever to throw at Erstad unless you're just that much of a poor sport.

Actually, no. Thats how baseball is policed by the players. Watch Baseall Tonight and see what they say. Its as natural in the game as what Erstad did.

If what Erstad was natural and legal, then whats the point in throwing at him?

Yeah, its unfortunate that Estrada ended up in the hospital, but it wasn't like Erstad was trying to hurt him...he was just trying to score.

He hurt one of your teammates and you have to stand up for your team. I would have been disappointed if he didn't throw at him.

He was released from the hospital this morning. Tests revealed no head or neck injuries, the results of a concussion test are still pending.

what HO-RAM Did was bush league. If someone was going to stick up for a player you do it in the same game not the next game. Smoltz saw nothing wrong with what happened its part of baseball things happen. Erstad was not going for the head. He just threw his shoulder and it so happened Estrada is a little catcher so thats where the hit ended up but, he wasn't trying to hurt him.

Smoltz was trying to get outs late in a close ballgame. It wasnt the time for a retaliation. Ramirez did what was expected of a pitcher in that situation, he stood up for his teammate.

And he did it the right way, he threw well behind Erstad. He could have drilled him in the head or ribs but he didn't. No one was hurt but he got the point across.
