Re: Boston Redsox and Keith Foulke

    I have a question:

Is Foulke still pitching with the new arm positioning? I was watching one of the Sox-Jays games and because of the Memorial cup we got the boston feed. The announcers were showing the difference between '04 and this year. Apparently Foulke's arm goes further back then it did last year.

Maybe that could be a contributing factor to some of his problems if he's still experimenting with that.

Just give the Mariners a top prospect and you can have:

Eddie Guardado, 1.61 ERA 19 Saves .182 Batting Average Against

I definatly think you will see the SOX get someone in a trade before the deadline.

He might be, but I don't think it's on purpose. He has a fairly complex delivery and has yet to get it straightened out for an extended period. Around the time of the hall of fame game, he went to Alabama to work out at American Sports Medicine Institute. They corrected some things and in the 10 games following he only allowed 1 ER, struck out 9 and walked 2. It appears now that he is falling back into his old habits, although I can't pick up any noticable differences in his delivery.

Maybe we should just send him to Alabama once a week?

Interesting stat I just heard on WEEI:

            Foulke's ERA
            Save situations: 11.00
            Non-save: 1.40

He's been lights out true, but he has a tron rotator cuff right? I dont know how he is pitching the way he is and should get so much more recognition for it, but I dont want to grab a guy who probably wont be able to finish the year.

His problem this year in the rotation has been that he's had to throw too many pitches and it wears on him. In the middle innings he gets pounded either because he's fatigued or the opposition has gotten to see too many pitches to be fooled as easily. It would remain to be seen how his arm would respond to pitching on back to back days for an inning at maximum effort, but I really think if that won't stop him he could flourish in that role much like Miguel Batista has for the Jays. This move would also leave Arroyo in the rotation, where he has been better than Miller so far this year.
Well, he has had his msot troubles in the first and second innings. Now coming in in the ninth would still be his frist inning of work and you have to wonder if it would be the same struggles.

I think he has a partially torn labrum. I'm not a doctor so here's an article by Will Carroll of BP that talks a little about it

Pretty risky man. Maybe explore some other options.

I agree, but they could get him for extremely cheap because of it. I don't understand any of this medical stuff so I'm not sure what the chances of Guardado breaking down this year. It may be worth the risk if they can get him for less than a Kelly Shoppach.

                        This may sound crazy... BUT...

Look how many closers that have been dominant over the years are having huge problems this year and injuries.

As much as i like some of these guys, it wouldn't suprise me if a lot of these closers were on steriods too. Not saying that Folke was, but you never know with anyone out there.

It's a very good thought if you think about it... it would explain quite a few people that are getting hurt or just all of a sudden, lost their stuff.

It's been mentioned but I really doubt that is the case with Foulke. The reason is, he's had his stuff and his normal velocity for stretches of the season. I think if steroids was the issue, you'd see a consistent drop in his velocity.

After listening to Foulke on the Dale and Holley show today, I'm convinced there's something going on behind the scenes. It really sounds like Foulke is having some sort of personal or health issue that is affecting his performance. Holley said he expects something to come out in the next week or so.

To me, Foulke was always very overated and just had the best month of his career last October. Basically he's back to normal now.

And on a side note, I love how everyone was saying how ever closer is awful this year and how Mo has lost it blah blah blah, yet he has quietly but together as good a half a season as he ever has.

                              29.2 innings this year
                              16 hits, 3 earned runs
                              32 K's, granted a high walk total of 11.
                              0.91 ERA.

If it wasn't for that HR Varitek hit in the season opener he would have insane stats.

Before this season Foulke had 6 consecutive seasons of over 60 appearances and under 3.00 ERA. The next closest is 4 seasons. That's overrated? He's no Rivera, but he has been one of the most consistent and effective closers in baseball for the last 6 years.
