You do realize that the HR derby format changed this year and is by country right? Bay is from Canada and will represent Canada in the HR Derby. Lee is from the US so the only HR "team" he could play on would be the US. Maybe he was asked to participate and chose not to?

No doubt Lee's having a great seaon, but that has nothing to do with the HR Derby or being the representative for Canada.

        read..

the commissioner's office said Friday it will have eight players represent their native countries at the July 11 event.
        United States- Alex Rodriguez
        Dominican Republic- Manny Ramirez
        Canada- Jason Bay
        Japan- Hideki Matsui
        Puerto Rico- Carlos Delgado
        Venezuela- Bobby Abreau
Curaco- Andruw Jones (considering he's the current league leader)
        Panama- Carlos Lee

Only problem is that this means Miggy doesn't get a chance to defend his title.

Re: MLB changes HR Derby format

I know I relize they changed it but it was much better seeing the best HR hitters in the game, not the world, Matsui aint even a "HR hitter" Bay is good, but i much rather have it being the old format and see those guys, I hope they get Ichiro to do the HR derby, thatd be cool...So who would you guys rather see...Pujols and Derek Lee or Matsui and Bay?

Re: MLB changes HR Derby format

I see. If you prefer the old format then that's great, but it's not Bay or Matui's fault for participating.

I actually don't like either format. I'd prefer seeing the Old Time HR Derby. The one where each player would play 9 innings and would get 3 outs per inning. Anything aside from a HR was an out.

I'm just not a big fan of the basic format in general right now.

As far as players, it's tough because some players don't want to participate. Some think the HR derby messes with their swing or could cause an injury. So maybe Lee or Pujols were asked to compete and declined to do so?

Is that list of players already confirmed?

Carlos Lee, Andruw Jones, Tejada and bay are all in it.

Manny has said before he wouldn't go because he feels it would mess with his swing, and he doesn't feel it's worth it.

That says Sacremento, CA. However, I thought he was born overseas as well? Maybe he was born here and spent most of his childhood in Japan?
