    Schilling To Sox Bullpen

BOSTON -- With their closer struggling and their ace at partial strength, the Boston Red Sox are sending Curt Schilling to the bullpen to plug a gap there and help him work his way back from an ankle injury.

"It's definitely the best thing for him," Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said Wednesday, " ... and it just so happens to be exactly what the team needs right now."
Schilling has been on a minor-league rehab assignment while trying to recover from a right ankle injury that put him on the disabled list after just three starts. In what was expected to be his last rehab appearance, he struggled to get through five innings with Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday.

Epstein said the team concluded that Schilling was "a long way" from being the ace who went 21-6 with a 3.26 ERA in the regular season before using an unprecedented medical technique to help pitch the Red Sox to their first World Series title since 1918.

"We don't need a five-inning starter right now. We need Curt Schilling to be himself," Epstein said. "We all feel he's not ready to be a dominant starter right now."

This is a good move for the Sox, because you don't want Schilling pitching a ton of innings right off the bat, and the Sox bullpen has been nothing short of horrendous (which isn't a bad thing )

already brought up in the team thread....

I think its a good move if he can be as effective as a reliever as he is as a starter.

But Theo said this was really just a temporary move, so who knows what's in store exactly...

Damon looks pretty irked about this move, insisting that Timlin should be closing out games because Schilling takes too long to warmup. Not good for team chemistry.

          Why is Damon saying anything?

No idea, but he isn't happy with Schilling closing out games.

He should stand by his coaches decision.

I'm a big Timlin fan but I don't understand what all the fuss is about? He has had some great innings but that doesn't make him a closer of the highest level or something

As for Schill...if the best way for him to rehab is to throw out of the pen so be it. I think Damon is tossing the "chemistry" thing 'cause he is still pissed Theo didn't keep the team just as it was last year

I had a little talk with Timlin once at Safeco field in the bullpen it was pretty funny.

Also got to watch some drunk guy yell at him for sucking in 97'. Good times.

Who cares what Damon thinks? He isn't a pitcher, and I fail to see how him having any negative comments about Schilling helps anything.

Last time I checked, he wasn't the coach.

I don't think the Schilling move is a very good one. But I am gettinng so tired of hearing about Johhny Damon he is so overated it isn't even funny,I mean all he cares about is getting famous since the Sox won the series. I admit he had a great series, but that was the worst thing that could of happened to Johhny Damon. Johnny go on another queer eye or write another book just shut up already.

Might be the biggest boneheaded move ever. Some starters can make good closers if necessary. Schilling isn't one of them.

Like I said in the Red Sox thread... its way too early to tell. Personally I think he'll be fine... he has the making of a good closer. He's got 2 great pitches... fastball and splitter... and he's clutch in big situations.
