The Yankees have gotten away with inconsistent play in the AL East because everyone else there seems to have done the same thing for one reason or another. I don't think they get away with their play in the NL East, but that's just meComment

What the **** are you smoking!?
What he is saying is that Jeter transcends the sport of baseball as Jordan did with basketball and the purpose behind the All-Star game is to showcase its star players.
Say what you will about Jeter, but none of us know how he would or wouldn't be on another team. The fact is, is that a lot of very good players have seen their careers hit a roadblock when they put on a Yankees uniform. Yet Jeter has not only thrived in this arena, but he's become the captain and leader of the most publicized, scrutinized, and media covered franchise of any sport in the western hemisphere.
Last I checked, there have been many, many players in the NBA All-Star game (as well as the MLB All-Star game) that were added to the roster during off years or after their respective primes were over.
I agree with Dibble. I won't lose any sleep that Jeter isn't in the game, but I'd much rather see him there than Michael Young and most definitely over Podsednik.<!-- / message -->Comment

Re: Rob Dibble on Jeter snub
I love to hate the yankees, but Jeter should be there. He should go instead of Sheffield. Sheff is a mercenary-- I don't care if he hits a home-run every time he's up, he's still a mercenary and I've seen enough of him to last my whole life... but Jeter ALWAYS does something unique when the money's on the line.Comment

.310, 11 homers, 37 RBI. 68 Runs, 10 Stolen Bases....utter garbage, right?

Actually, Jeter has a better OBP than Young, more runs scored, and more sb's. Going just by stats, you could make a case for either one.
Like I said earlier in the thread:
Young has more hits, doubles, triples, homers, RBI, total bases, less K's, a higher Batting Avg, and a higher Slug. pct. This isn't a lifetime achievement award here. Young has had the better year.Comment

Re: Rob Dibble on Jeter snub
This article is a reason why people dislike the Yanks. I could care less about Jeter being in the ASG. I don't hate him or anything, in fact there are a lot of the current Yankees that I like(A-Rod, Matsui, Sheff). But this article just bleeds pure bias and it really gets on my nerve how this guy will go to great lengths to suck Jeter's johnson.Comment

The game of baseball is not always entirely about statistics, although Jeter is still statistically in the top three of all MLB shortstops. (Please check things like this before you post that he has "been garbage") Can you please tell me what you consider every category? Because last I checked, Jeter has a better OBP, more SB, and more runs scored than Young. Add to it that Jeter is a lead-off hitter and I'd say he is playing his role perfectly.
I come here hoping for a legitimate baseball discussion and I get utter garbage instead.
Shouldn't you be the one that should be checking your bias at the door?Comment

BTW, he has the second most strikeouts of AL shortstops, which obviously doesn't help his cause. While he has more SB (10), he's been caught four times (which happens to tie for the lead of SS) and has a lower stealing percentage than Young. Look at the stats, and I see him solidly behind Young and Tejada in nearly every hitting stat there is, including a lower SB percentage. The only advantage Jeter has is in OBP and walks, which directly correspond, and runs, but the Yankees as a team lead the Rangers and Orioles in total runs scored.
Now tell me why he deserves to go, since the stats dont stack up and he's the leader/captain of an underperforming team.Comment

Re: Rob Dibble on Jeter snub
He's not even the best shortstop in the division. I'm not biased either, but Miguel Tejada is the ONLY reason we haven't completely collapsed yet. He's a top 2, probably the best SS in baseball, and arguably the best player in baseball. I would take him and Michael Young over Jeter this year.Comment

Re: Rob Dibble on Jeter snub
I don'tr even think Jeter's the best clutch player on his team right now. Hideki Matusi is definitely the most clutch player now on the Yankees and arguably in the entire major leagues.
Despite Jeter's stats.. I voted Matsui in that 32nd man voting. Just too clutch to ignore.Last edited by Armitage; 07-09-2005, 05:55 PM.Comment
