Has anybody else noticed that whenever a Yankee fan begins speaking about this 'true yankee' nonsense, he almost immediately appears like the most arrogant person you've ever seen? I can almost picture a Shooter McGavin type saying this tripe.

Honestly, I've never come across such a bullcrap concept in my entire life. It's simply another way for Yankee fans to feel as if they're superior to others. We get the point - you've won a truckload of championships. You've been pretty damn good. There's no need to make yourselves look pompous while celebrating your success.
    Bravo! Bravo!

Yankee fans didn't coin the term "true Yankee".... the media did. And if the media keeps writing this thoughtless articles about the subject.. I think Yankee fans are more suited to state their opinion on it then a fan of another team. We don't talk about it so we can feel superior to anyone. How does rooting for a good team make the fan superior to anyone else? The team may be superior to others but the fan..... nope. There are on the same level as everyone else.. just a fan. We're proud of our team's success... but just because my team is successful... how does that make me a better person than a fan of any other team? It doesnt.

So if the media is gonna analyze the "true Yankee" debate... Yankee fans have as good of a view on it as anybody... and thats why we feel like we're the most qualified to talk trutfully about it... because it has to do with out team.

        Re: "True Yankees"

I don't particularly see the late 90s yankees (the 98 team in particular) as being the model for all yankee franchises... that team was a brilliant ball-club that would absolutely find every conceivable way to beat you if you let them... I would say talent for talent they weren't even the best team in their respective years... now this isn't the way I would describe the murderers' row yankees or the Mickey Mantle and Joe Dimaggio teams which simply seemed to have twice as much talent as all the other teams in the league (similar to the present team)... as someone pointed out, would Reggie Jackson be a 'true yankee'--- he was about the most self-promoting wind-bag to ever grace the field.... he was cluch though... but still...

To me, a true yankee is a guy who comes up with the yanks or flounders elsewhere before blossoming on the yanks and who gets the job done however it needs to get done... but saying any ballplayer who does this on any team, say David Ortiz for example, is a 'true yankee' is a load of crap.

          Re: "True Yankees"

I hate the term "True Yankee". It's almost impossible to watch or listen to any baseball thing in New York without that being thrown around. "Oh Rodriguez is isn't a true Yankee" or "Giambi will never be a true Yankee". Just give it a rest. Seriously this plus the "Seeee-ya" call by Michael Kay are some of the worst things NY has to offer.

So true, so true. It's part of the true bandwagon mentality.

              Offender #1: Jay Mohr.

I found that column so utterly absurd that I think there's a 25% chance the entire thing was a joke.

In an unrelated note, I feel just as strongly about Red Sox fans as I do about Yankee fans. That's a whole other story though..
