    AL Rookie of the Year

I can't remember a recent year where the AL rookie of the year race was this tight. There isn't one deserving player for rookie of the year but a number of them. These are the first ones that come to mind for me:

    Huston Street - 14 saves, 1.41 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 4-1 record
    Dan Johnson - .317 avg, .404 OBP, .939 OPS, 10 home runs
    Robinson Cano - .283 avg, .303 OBP, .740 OPS, 8 home runs
    Tadahito Iguchi - .283 avg, .350 OBP, .793 OPS, 10 home runs
    Aaron Hill - .300 avg, .350 OBP, .788 OPS
    Grady Sizemore - .289 avg, .333 OBP, .739 OPS, 13 home runs, 60 RBI
    Joe Mauer (eligible?) - .299, .374, .806 OPS, 8 home runs

I don't know if Mauer is eligible for this year or not, perhaps someone else knows that. From here, it looks like Street has the edge as he has been dominant out of the pen, where as no one else has been truely dominant from the plate. Cano will probably get a lot of support because he's a Yankee, but Sizemore and Iguchi are more deserving at this point. Dan Johnson has under 200 at bats at this point, so its hard to vote for him. If he keeps up his current pace for another 100 at-bats or so he could make some real noise. If Nick Swisher has a strong finish for the A's he could also inject himself into the race.

I think Mauer is eligible. The cutoff is 130 at-bats and he only had 107 last year.

Either way, my vote goes to Huston Street.

      Don't forget:

      Gustavo Chacin - 140.2 IP, 11-6, 3.39 ERA
      Jonny Gomes - 184 AB, .288/.367/.585, 14 HR

I think Chacin has to be the front-runner right now....

I'm almost positive Mauer is not eligible.

        I'd give it to Street.

I'm pretty sure Mauer is ineligible. You can't be on an active 25-man roster for more than 45 days during the previous season, and Mauer was on the Twins roster for 46 days last season. Doh.

            Russ Adams-.273 .353 .440, 8 Homers 50 RBI

            Gustavo Chacin- W-11 L-6 3.39 ERA 140 innings

After looking at the numbers, my non-homer choice would be Sizemore.

As much as I'd love to see a Yankee win it agaiin..... Huston Street has been so valuable to the A's resurgence this year.

Yeah, seriously... this is getting me questioning import players and ROY eligibility. I mean, you've got guys like Matsui, Iguchi, and Ichiro who have had pro experience in Japan, but they are/were candidates for ROY, hmm. Not exactly rookies if you have been paid before to play ball.

Now that Cano's average has dropped about 30 points in the last 3 weeks, I'd definately say Street.

The most deserving player? I'm going to say Tadahito Iguchi. He has been getting it done all season for a winning team, and his numbers are very solid. At this rate he will finish with...

                          .283 AVG, .350 OBP, 83 Runs, 14 HRs, 65 RBI, and 20 SB.

But, I don't think that they will give him the award. After Ichiro, I don't think baseball is big on giving Japanese imports the ROY award when they have been playing professional baseball for years. My guess is Street.

I'd give it to Iguchi. Not only because he plays for the Sox but because he has put up the numbers as well as doing things like giving up an AB to move a guy over and letting a pitch go by because Pods has a great jump.

Eh, if friggen Angel Berroa can win it over Matsui like he did in '03, then there is no way in hell any 30-year-old should ever win ROY.
