Preety sure the owner, if he wanted too, could've kept Dye and Damon and Beltran. the fact that none of them are with the team tells me the owner has no desire to win.

See this is what I don't understand. Ok I can understand being fiscally responsible but owners like Pohlad, Glass, and Mcclatchey take it to a whole other level. I've heard owners buy teams as toys but it seems those guys didn't get the memo. I mean what's the point of owning a baseball team when you're using it as an investment tool for yourself?

I also can't believe the huge dropoff from '03 to now. I guess '03 was just a fluke for the Royals. I honestly thought they were on the way back.

That '03 team played way above their capabilities. That was one of the best managing jobs ever...Not by a standpoint of Pena being a great strategist, but by the sheer fact that he was an absolute great motivator and with a young club like that, that really pays dividends. I think the next season, the lack of talent(and pitching) caught up to them and there is only so much motivation can do for a ball club.

I'm pretty sure Beltran made it pretty clear he wasn't going to resign with the Royals.. so they traded him.

The hope for the Royals lies in their young pitching, Runelvys Hernandez, Zack Grienke, Denny Bautista and J.P. Howell. they need them to develope into Major League pitchers before the Royals can even look towards respectability (.500), let alone the post-season.

That's the whole point of business... to make money. Investing in the team is a risk that most of these guys aren't willing to take.

WOW, this is pathatic. And I dont know much about the owner, but if he doesnt spend his many riches than F him and what he does. If you are going to jump in to this business, get in it to win not to fatten your pockets! The sad thing is that winning would increase your riches

This is true but don't you think building a winner would help in doing that? The Blue Jays for years had the philosophy of spending enough to win even if it means they'd go in the red for a short time because in the end they'll make a big profit.

Anyways JP Ricciardi has a call-in show after Jays games but since today's game is a west coaster he was on before and was asked about Allard Baird's situation. JP basically said that the KC job is one that isn't even worth accepting and that it's just too much for a GM when the owner won't even make a comittment to win.

Pretty damning stuff considering this is coming from a MLB exec.

this is the problem with baseball.. yeah everyone says the Yanks spend too much - but take a look at it closer - Steinbrenner puts the money back into the team to make it a contender year after year - and yes, he may spout off sometimes, but he is passionate about the Yanks.. the Royals owner is content lining his own pockets & not about the product on the field..
& since there is no "true" comissioner (someone who hasn't owned a team), there is nothing really that can be done.. this is truely sad for a once proud team..

Re: The Royals are a farce.

The Royals are the most hapless team in the league.

Glass only cares about pocketing revenue sharing money. Baird has been a poor GM. The Beltran trade looks to be a real stinker at the moment. Buck, Wood and especially Teahan have been disappointments.

Greinke has regressed. He was excellent early in the season but had the worst run support in the majors. I think that had some sort of negative impact on him. It's just a terrible environment to be in.

The Royals have also done a poor job in drafting. Billy Butler looks impressive so far and Alex Gordan should be a solid player for years to come. After these 2 there's little else to offer in the minor league system.

Now, if the Royals manage to lose 20 in a row, I imagine that puts Terrence Long into an exclusive club. There can't be many players who have played for a team that won 20 in a row and lost 20 in a row.

The commissioner's job is to represent the best interests of Major League Baseball, ergo, the 31 franchises. These franchises are obviously owned by individual(s). Therefore, the commissioner is essentially the figurehead, representative, or unifying leader for these owners. The commissioner has no stake in representing the players, or fans for that matter (unless they're giving money to a team which directly benefits MLB).

he screwed up the montreal situation & really the only reason he was put there was because the owners were unhappy with Fay Vincent & put one of their own in his place.. the commish should do what is for the best interest in the game
