While i can understand that he is upset about not being called up he is a minor leaguer, and should not be blasting the orginization before he ever plays a game at the major league level.

Re: Young is the Restless
He may have not played at the ML level yet, but there is NO reason for him not to be called up, and we all know how sucky the Front Office and Ownership of Tampa Bay is. We dont know the whole story, or we may actually, but he definately as a point and should be called up to see some ML pitching.Comment

(Didn't realize this was a duplicate thread. I guess I'll post the same thing here.)
Yeesh. Yeah, that sort of sounds sketchy to me. IMO, as impatient as I would be, I would certainly wait my turn.
Or, I would possibly pull a Dennis Quaid in The Rookie, where he threatens that he would leave the organization to spend time with his family if he doesn't get called up. While you may not get it your way, I don't see what else he would do.
Of course, he was an older guy. This guy is 19. I understand his reasonings, but no need to complain. Furthermore, no need to call them cheap.
I heard something about Francoeur a few weeks back about his contract that made me like him just a little less than I do now, but I still love the guy I guess.
The D'Rays would be cheap, though. They have nothing to lose... they're not going to make the playoffs, and their team, while young (look at Delmon Young, for example), does have some holes that other teams are exploiting. Give the kid a chance. At least call him up.

(Re-posting from other thread)
He's wrong.
Why should he get called up and start? How is that fair to the starting outfielders who have been with the team all year? You're going to bench Jonny Gomes, or Joey Gathwright, or Carl Crawford, or Aubery Huff etc. for this 19 year old snot? That's pretty much a slap in the face to them, they've paid their dues...Let Young pay his.
This somewhat offends me as a baseball fan. Look at Rick Short's situation, then tell me Young is right. How 'Bout 'Dem Boys From Beantown: 86-63Comment

19 year old snot? The dude's the most talented player in the minor leagues, he tore through the minors pretty quickly. IMO, he has proven that he already deserves a shot in the majors. Most organizations would allow him to atleast come up, and get a few at bats. He didn't demand to come up and start every game. I know the Royals left Ken Harvey in the minors, because they didn't want him to get arbitration. And while we are talking about guys not getting called up, why didn't they call up Upton? And neither Upton nor Young are playing in the Arizona Fall League. Wouldn't they be better served playing in a few games, than doing nothing? Especially Upton since he already proved he can play on this level.Comment

Bingo. He's supposed to be completely nasty. He's right, but there's nothing he can do about it. It's been collectively bargained between the players and owners. He has no control over the situation.
Right now, I sorta feel bad for him, but then I realize that he'll have more money than I'll ever see in my entire life in about 4-5 years. Assuming he doesn't get injured.Comment

They already brought Crawford and Baldelli up too early and they're just developing now. They don't want to do to Young what they did with those two.Last edited by VTek33; 09-13-2005, 11:10 PM.How 'Bout 'Dem Boys From Beantown: 86-63Comment

Re: Young is the Restless
The reason they have not called up B.J. Upton is due to his horrific year in the field (53 errors at AAA). Upton is likely going to become a part of the Devil Rays crowded Outfield picture which may push Young even further off the pace, Jonny Gomes and Joey Gathright have earned their spots on the Devil Rays roster and next season the Rays will have to find playing time for them as well as Rocco Baldelli (the Rays will likely have to trade Aubrey huff to clear some space). Delmon better prepare himself now because no matter how good a spring he has he probably won't see the majors until next may at the earliest.Comment

Re: Young is the Restless
It's pretty simple why the D-Rays didn't call up Young or Upton. They don't want to start their arbitration clocks and give them enough service time to make them Super 2 arbitration cases.
How nice of Young to use the word "cheap" when the D-Rays handed him 5.8 million after drafting him.
I feel bad for Upton though. He made a ton of errors again this season but his bat is ready. He's done everything the organization has asked of him without complaining.
If the D-Rays ever decide to keep their players (Crawford was a good start) this team could be really scary in 2 years.Comment

Re: Young is the Restless
While I would like to see Delmon Young in the majors, right now there is no point. He woukd be called up to sit him on the bench. I'm not in favor of benching Gomes, Huff, or Crawford for him right now. He's only 19 years old and major league pitching is a lot more different than minor league pitching. He wants to be called up so he can become a free agent faster and cash in earlier. For the Rays from a payroll perspective, it would make more sense to have him play 6 full seasons than 5 seasons and 1 month when he becomes a FA. He'll make the roster next season, but right now it's pointless for him to be called up to play 2 or 3 times a week and possibly lose him a year earlier. People are gonna call the Rays cheap and their reputation is warrented, but from a buisness perspective it makes no sense. What I don't like is that the DRays did not give him a reason why he wasn't called up. I think that could have smoothed things over with the kid, instead of not returning his agents phone calls. There is likely to be a regime change this offseason so maybe they can settle Delmon down. But like a poster above me said, the Rays have already paid him 5.8 million after he was drafted, so it's not like they haven't paid the guy already. He's probably just frustrated he isn't in the majors which I can understand, but no need to take shots at the organization.
BJ Upton has not done everything the team has asked him to do in the minors. He is still a major liability in the field and had 50+ errors in AAA. His bat is major league ready, but his glove is not. Until he cuts down on the errors (which is baffling since he has worked with Ozzie Smith), he won't be called up. Julio Lugo playing well this season hasn't helped Upton's cause either. Disagree with another poster who said Baldelli and Crawford were called up too early. Both were major league ready when they were called up. Baldelli was a ROTY candidate in 03 and Crawford has played well since he was called up a few years ago.MLB: Rays

They weren't going to make the same mistake this year.

Yep, Upton's a poor fielder, but they should call him up so he can continue to work on it.
The Devil Rays should try trading Baldelli, there would definitely be some takers. On top of the guys already on the team, Young, and possibly Upton, the Devil Rays also have two other highly touted outfielders in their system, Elijah Dukes, and Wes Bankston(though they are moving him to first, it seems).Comment
