    Doing a research paper...

Hey all, I'm doing a research paper for one of my classes. I need to get a bunch of names of Yankees that were either terrible before they became Yankees and superstars when they joined the team, or were superstars before joining the Yankees and were terrible when they were signed. Thanks a lot!

    Stars then became horrible:

    Tony Fernandez
    Steve Sax
    Chuck Knoblauch
    Hideki Irabu
Dave Winfield (well not really but he underachieved)
    Jesse Barfield
    Rick Cerone

Hell just look through the 80s roster!

non stars turning into big names:

    Paul O'neill

er can't think of many others sorry

Disagree about Knoblauch... beacuse he was unfairly hyped as an HOF 2B on the Twins... but he was a huge piece of our championships.

Lets see (just naming guys from early 90's to now):

Guys who became good on the Yanks:

        Brosius
        O'Neill
        Tino
        David Wells

Guys who were good and stunk on Yanks:

        Irabu
        Doc Gooden
        Kenny Rogers
        Denny Neagle
        Canseco
Justice (was huge in the playoffs though)
        Raul Mondesi
        Rondell White
        Armando Benitez

I disagree about Wells. He had a so-so career up to that time. He was always hyped as a guy who could be great. Admittedly he was hit and miss but he was a pretty good pitcher at the time he came to NYY. He DID take it to another level but he was already pretty good.

I disagree with Knoblauch and Justice. And Gooden was way over the hill by the time he got to the Yankees. Brosius had his best season with the A's, two years before he came to the Yankees.

Holy crap guys, this really helped a lot. Thanks!

(Keep naming/discussing too, this can only get better ....

+ Knoblauch did his job as leadoff man well, in my opinion)

you guys got Canseco when he was injured though, right? or coming back from an injury. anyway, he was in his prime like he had been. I don't think he became a Yankee and then just sucked.

                        Definitely Jeff Weaver.

Robin Ventura was another one that was horrible as a Yankee.

Ruben Sierra was not very good in his first stint with the Yankees (July '95-July '96) but has done pretty well in his second stint. Mike Stanley was nothing more than a backup Catcher before having 4 strong seasons as a Yankee.

Most of them have been covered in this thread already, but Chacon is looking like the next player he broke out with the Yankees.

Aaron Small is 9-0 as a Yankee, 15-10 with 5 other teams in his previous 7 seasons.
