Yankees coach fires off on Steinbrenner

I thought that was totally weak for Steinbrenner to congratulate the Angels and their manager and not say anything about his own manager.

If this was already posted, sorry.

Good for Mel... He's been getting crap from Steinbrenner for the past few years, and the only reason he kept coming back was because of Joe Torre... He'll be a pitching coach somewhere else, and soon...

I heard, too, that Torre was supposed to be making a statement soon, probably in response to Steinbrenner's "congratulations" of the Angels... I doubt he quits, not with all that money left on the table... I wouldn't quit, either... You'd have to fire me.

Actually , as talked about on ESPN, George has always called the other team and congratulated them and thier coach after a series defeat. It was nothing out of the ordinary ans is being over blown.

I'm assuming your a huge Steinbrenner fan?

Thats just not cool, I would congratulate the opposing team and all, but if I made the playoffs in MLB, I'm guessing I congratulate my manager and his staff as well.

It's just a slap in the face is all I'm saying, I hate the Yanks, but I love Torre, he is a good man and does not deserve to be treated like that.

I know steinbrenner spends the bucks, but sometimes he is just childish.

It's because in NY there are unrealistic expectations. It's World Series or bust for Steinbrenner. I can't say I agree with his methods but hey it's his team he can treat the personel any way he chooses.

Actually didnt he get a two year suspension because he hired a private eye to dig up dirt on Dave Winfield?

Close but not quite the same,

              according to baseball library:

» July 30, 1990: In a surprisingly harsh ruling, Commissioner Fay Vincent orders Yankees owner George Steinbrenner to resign as the club's general partner by August 20th and bans him from day-to-day operation of the team for life. The ruling is a result of Steinbrenner's $40,000 payment to confessed gambler Howie Spira for damaging information about since-traded Yankee star Dave Winfield.

Steinbrenner is a joke who finally won when he let other people make decisions. When he decided to take up more of the spotlight and try to sign everyone, the Yankees dynasty was over. Torre should just quit, and take the Mets job. Let the whole Yankees staff leave, and the Yankees can go back to having Jessie Barfield as their best player in 5 years.

I think the Mets are happy enough with Willie Randolph.

What do you mean "close but not the same"? Are you referring to the fact that it was a gambler and not a private eye? Either way, it says that their are limits to what is tolerated from Steinbrenner. I realize that was under Vincent but by Vincent taking this action then, its harder for George to justify treading that line even today.

Yep I made a distinction between gambler and private eye. You're right tho that George couldn't even remotely contemplate doing this today.

Ding Ding Ding, bring back Gene Michael.

Once the Yanks lost the '01 World Series Georgie threw a hissy fit and since then he's probably had the 4-worst off seasons imaginable for this team.

Willie was OK at best this year and I'm sure Mets fans wouldn't like the idea of getting another Yankee (Torre probably wouldn't even come because he wouldn't want to ruin Willie's chance), but Torre is a better manager than Willie ever will be.

Steinbrenner only cares about his staff in they are winning.
