    What is the Deal with Juan Uribe?

    I asked this question a few weeks ago, but under a different thread titled "Is ozzie Guillen a Good Manager," but no one reponded to it.

    Chicago fans, I really want to know.

    I mean, I grew up watching his father, Jose Uribe (Giants) in the 80's. Of course I rooted agianst them, but there was no denying that Jose Uribe was slick and smooth at the SS position, and was a relatively low-key, quiet kinda guy.

    Some 18 years later I now see his son, who I admit I haven't watched play much because - "HELLO" - I am in Cali and the Dub Sox are in Illinois. But What I've seen of him during this playoff series is nothing short of downright hilarious, non-stop entewrtainment - and I LOVE it.

    I mean, this guy comes off like such a character. Here are some of his moves:

    Bending his back over backwards and leaning his head back "howl at the moon style" when taking a strike;

    Making the most absurd faces after the ump calls strikes;

    Snapping his head back at the ump after the pitch when it is tight in the count;

    Flailing his arms about violently to call for a catch w/ no one near him (like last night);

    Throwing the ball so hard on routine ground balls that it looks like his arm is about to go flying off towards first base with the ball;

    Making hilarious faces every time he is about to throw to first.

    That's just what I can think of right now. But tell me, am I exaggerating? I really want to know. Juan Uribe seems like he plays with so much fierceness and intensity, but it just comes off almost comical to me. And I knwo the umps get pissed at him b/c you cannot jerk and twist your body around liek that after called strikes and expect to get any breaks.

    I think one reason why he bobbled that ball in the 14th is b/c he is wrapped up so tight.

    Even saying all this, it really makes the Sox fun(ny) to watch, just for Uribe's at-bats and throws. If you haven't noticed this, then please just watch him tonight and come back here and tell me I'm wrong.

    Ragin' Juan!!

    wow- i didnt know that was his father....

    that was some infield the Giants had years ago.. but too many players today have this "the umpire is against me" attitude so they make faces, etc.. maybe he just likes to overreact..

      Honestly, thats just his type of character. As for the different notions during the game, he has superstitions like every other baseball player.

      His ferociousness is what makes him a great SS. He loves to play the game with passion. Also he has fun playing the game.

      If he can make a hard throw to first, needed or not, he would. its just his style of game.

      And believe me, I think I can speak for Chicago fans and say that his defense is another great thing to look at. He had a few errors the past 2 games, but other than that, his arm, and his quickness is great.

      He and Iguchi are probably my favorite Infielders in the Majors.

        I agree with you, he looks good in the field from what I have seen. But he just seems to be wound so tight all the time. And it's like wow, I don't know if any infeilder tries to throw the ball so hard on every play - like you said, "needed or not." I mean, J.U. will gun it to first even if Benjie Molina is trotting down the line on a 1-hopper to short.

          Uncle, not father.

          A quote from Jose from this article:

          "I had my uncle--Jose Uribe--who was here," said Juan of the former San Francisco Giants shortstop. "And I had a lot of other members of my family here too. I got a lot of tickets for my family. It was a big game and I wanted to do something for them to see."

            Thanks, man. I heard a radio guy say it was his father, and I just took the radio guy's word for it. I never double checked the info.

                    All i know is Juan Uribe is the only player i have ever seen able to swing from down on one knee and still crush the ball 400+ feet.

                      HAHA I remember that. That was amazing. It was like cricket/golf/polo all in one swing.
