    First Trade

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2213182

Vinny Castilla for Brian Lawrence..Nothing big but i think itz a good move for both teams for sure..Lawrence gives them a quality 3 or 4 starter and Castilla gives the Padres a quality 5 or 6 hitter

    Re: First Trade

There is one positive out of this... the Padres got rid of Brian Lawrence, who has regressed each year since his rookie year. He isn't a number 3 or 4 esp. with the stuff he throws. Mid-80's fastball with breaking pitches that need to be tinkered with every two-three starts. There's room for possible Clay Hensley or Tim Stauffer to be in the starting rotation now.

However, Vinny Castilla WILL NOT solve this offense's problem of driving in runs. He played in a pitchers park last season so his stats should be the same this year. No matter where he bats, the other seven (not including the pitcher) has to step up.

I agree that getting rid of Lawrence is a good move, but Castilla's career is going to come to a painful and ugly end in Petco.

agreed. take the "3 or 4" and "5 or 6" in the statement made by the original poster and make it more like "5th in rotation" and "7-8 in the lineup IF NOT BENCHED".

I actually like the trade for the Nats. If Cordero can perform the way he does with what he has, maybe Lawrence will have some success as well? It gives them a more reliable arm when they've got guys like Armas and junk who can't get the job done. Only problem is that now they need a new third basemen.

I like this trade more for Washington than SD...

Where is Rsox?!? He is slacking reporting the transactions.

Everything is going to go against San Diego this offseason.

I know they're going to let Giles, Hernandez, and Hoffman go (can you believe that?). Apparently some feel Linebrink will excel as closer, but I think otherwise.

This move might be the best the Padres make this offseason.

Rage, what about Otsuka? I think he's done well as a setup guy the last couple of seasons. Could he take over for Hoffman if he's let go?

I'm not too high on anyone taking over Hoffy's spot. Aki was mediocre last season. We have bullpen depth... on the major league roster and I want them to keep it that way. Don't do anything stupid by trading away what was one of the top bullpens in the league.

Well i Know neither are superstarts at all and neither are to good..But Brian Lawrence's stats arent that bad..If he stays healthy he should be the Nationals #4 starter. Vinny is gettin up there in age so i dont see him being a huge pickup but i'd say he bats 6th in that lineup 7th at worst and he's got a really good glove so thatz always a plus

dumb question - do they still have Randa? if so, what is the point of having 2 3rd basemen (& i am not even including mr burroughs)..

The Nationals have a new third baseman - Ryan Zimmerman the #4 overall pick from last years draft who performed quite well (.397 with 10 double in 50 at-bats and .988 OPS) as a September call-up.

                              Randa is a free agent.

I followed the Nationals last year and watched Castillo limp around the bases. Can't see how this will help the Padres at all, at all.

Burroughs. I wish they'd trade him to some team that would appreciate him. The kid can hit. For power, no, but he's made for Petco. They've been down on him and I just don't get it.
