Nice, overpaying for two average players. Solid move...
    Hahaha..

Please explain to me how a player with a career OPS of .954 is average...

11 mil for a guy that's on the decline? Come on now.

And I personally have never been impressed with Ryan and I felt the contract he got was absurb.

      Just my opinion.

        Yep, a 100 K to 26 B ratio is not impressive......

I never knew a guy with a .423 OPB last year was on the decline...

He played in the worst hitters park last year, hit 15 homeruns, yet still managed and OPS of .905. He registered over 115 walks last year almost 30 more than the previous year. He batted .301 in 05, as opposed to .284 in 04. Apart from the power numbers which were undoubtedly linked to playing in Petco Park, I don't see this decline people are talking about.

You may feel Giles is on the decline and Ryan is overpaid, but to call them average players is silly.

One year warrants that kind of contract?

Actually 2 years. Oh and he actually pitched LESS innings in '04 then he did in '03. This guy has a lot of life left in his arm.

We'll see come 2006. If he does well, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.

Damn, that was a rough mobbing by Blue Jays fans. :y4:

Nothing personal... It's just we haven't won in a while, but we're starting to attract big time Free Agents and we want these guys to bring us back to the days of the mid to late 80's, early 90's...

Re: Get ready to welcome Giles to the Jays

5 years is too long for a guy his age, but he can still play.

If the Blue Jays were smart, they should go for a three-year contract. Giles's power is down from his prime years, but he's still good for 20-30 bombs a year. However, if he ends up tailing off when he hits year four and with the money he would be getting in this deal, the Jays would have a dead weight on their team.

Just something to think about. I think this is just a bluff on the part of Giles to drive up the Padres offer.

I still think he'll end up with the Cardinals.

Here's something for you to chew on if you think his power numbers were a result of Petco Park. In 2005 he hit only 6 home runs there, leaving him with 9 from elsewhere. In 2004 he hit 10 in Petco Park while hitting 13 away from Petco Park. So it's stupid to attribute the drop in power numbers to the ballpark when in fact he almost had the same figures regardless of what venue.

You might also want to factor the walks to fact that the Padres HAD NO ONE capable enough to hit behind Giles to the point that the pitchers wouldn't think about pitching around Giles.

Giles and Vernon Wells would make a pretty damn good 3/4 hitters.

Yeah, if Vernon Wells doesn't go Klesko/Nevin on Giles maybe we'll see Giles's numbers over 20 home runs again.

The Dome is a good hitters park. I'd be shocked if he doesn't get between 25-30 HR's. As long as his OPS is over .900, I'll be fine. Vernon Wells is considered a great player, yet can't even manage an OPS above .800. That tells you how much we need a guy like Giles.
