Re: Get ready to welcome Giles to the Jays

If Giles gets hold of the bat like he did in 2004, then 30 home runs isn't out of the question, but last year he looked a little slower swinging that bat although he mustered a lot of extra base hits.

As long as Vernon Wells doesn't hit .250 with 6 home runs he should be fine (I think those were the numbers of Klesko and Nevin combined hitting behind Giles).

Re: Get ready to welcome Giles to the Jays

Here's something for you to chew on if you think his power numbers were a result of Petco Park. In 2005 he hit only 6 home runs there, leaving him with 9 from elsewhere. In 2004 he hit 10 in Petco Park while hitting 13 away from Petco Park. So it's stupid to attribute the drop in power numbers to the ballpark when in fact he almost had the same figures regardless of what venue.

You might also want to factor the walks to fact that the Padres HAD NO ONE capable enough to hit behind Giles to the point that the pitchers wouldn't think about pitching around Giles.
Well, you could conceivably say that the high walks led to the lower HR total as teams won't give him good pitches so being the patient hitter he is, he won't hack and try to go yard all the time. That may in someway explain his very solid doubles numbers.

And wasn't every Padres player getting a fairly significant decrease in their homerun totals?

That ain't nothing compared to the Philly fans, they're team is crumbling and they got a chip on their shoulder. You gotta give the Jays credit though, they're spending cash to get the players they think they need to challenge the Sox and Yanks.

Well, if Giles gets signed, here's what the roster would look like (w/ projected lineup)

          SS - Adams
          2B - Hudson
          LF - Giles
          CF - Wells
          3B - Koskie
          1B - Hillenbrand
          DH - Hill
          C - Zaun
          RF - Rios

          C - Quiroz
          1B - Hinske
          OF - Johnson
OF - Catalanotto (I think he isn't coming back, otherwise Gabe Gross)

          SP - Halladay
          SP - Chacin
          SP - Lilly
          SP - Towers
          SP - Downs

          RP - League
          RP - Schoenweiss
          RP - Frasor
          RP - Speier
          RP - Walker
          SU - Batista
          CL - Ryan

That seems pretty good to me.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, do any non-Jay fans look at that, and go "Damn, they have Rios, who's constantly .300/30/100/20 in my MVP dynasty batting 9th?" Seriously, I want to know.

True, he just had no one capable of hitting around him.

However, the statement of every Padres losing home run totals is not true save for Loretta, who in 2004 actually hit a lot of home runs due to Petco Park and in 2005 suffered a thumb injury that sapped his power, Klesko and Nevin, who both pretty much lost all their bat speed, although Klesko did hit more home runs last year than in 2004.

The only thing with Petco Park making it a hard park to hit home runs is RCF, which last season I saw less balls hit to than in 2004. (It is also being considered to be moved in from 411 to 395).

Which, I presume for a lefty hitter, is a bad thing...

Wells had an OPS last year of .783, even though he had 28 HR, and 97 RBI's. If he can get back to 2003 form (doubtful, but with a .909 OPS), or 2004 form (more likely, with an .809 OPS), then whoever hits in front of him will benefit.

JP will be far from done dealing if or when Giles is signed. We badly need a 2nd starter and I'd still like to improve right field. I think Hudson could net us a good 3rd rotation player and Batista will get us Mench.

Not really, people make a big deal out of Death Valley in RCF, but the dimensions of RF down the line to a different part of RCF is comparable to the other ballparks.

If Giles was consistently hitting to RCF and if the ball was within 12 feet of the wall then I'd agree, but he wasn't, his triples and doubles came off linedrives that wouldn't be home runs elsewhere.

                      I agree...just posting that.

I'd rather go after Overbay with Batista, and move Hudson for a #3 starter. Maybe we can eat Hinske's contract.

BJ Ryan is a closer, that much money for any closer is WAY too much.

Giles, is a great player, but he's 35 years old.

I don't mean they will be horrible THIS year, but they headed towards long term failure with these kinds of moves.

JP was on MLB.com radio earlier today. He said that the Jays have not offered Giles five years. He also emphasized that the Jays would have to pull out of the running if Giles wants five years. He also said that his gut feeling is that Giles stays on the West coast.

Yeah, my friend told me this about 10 minutes ago. I don't know. He denied the Ryan rumour, but never said that the Jays were out of the running or anything. This sounds like he actually has no chance, which surprises me. If Giles doesn't sign, I'll be disapointed.

On a different note, if the Jays signed Burnett, where would you rank their pitching staff in comparision to the rest of the AL? Just throwing it out there.

                              West Coast team huh?

I'm thinking Dodgers. Wouldn't that be great Padres? Giles stays in the division and pulls off a Steve Finley on you.

For those who don't know, the Padres released Finley thinking he wasn't worth keeping and that they had a valid replacement. Finley went on to own the Padres each season until this year (since he played for the Angels).

And it's good to read that Batista is being inquired about. I can't wait till he is traded.
