I really don't see the Red Sox dumping him for much less than fair value unless they have a realistic replacement, which Abreu isn't.

Originally posted by MisfitJayson Stark is reporting these rumors are false. The Red Sox approached the Phillies about Abreu for Ramirez and they shot it down. The Phillies want a front of the line starter for Abreu, or cash and a pitcher along with Ramirez.Comment

Re: Phillies going after Manny Ramirez
Word out of Philli now is that the Red Sox and Phillies may be talking about a trade of Abreu for Nixon and a starter, probably Matt Clement. For the Phillies, they'd get a right fielder who is a defensive upgrade over Abreu. While Nixon is not the equal of Abreu at the plate, when healthy he's proven he cant hit 25+ homers a year and he'd probably flourish hitting at Citizen's Bank Park. The problem is keeping Nixon healthy, and he still isn't very good against left-handed pitchers. Clement on the other hand, can be a good pitcher but I don't like him in Philli. When he's on he can get groundballs but his command can be so erratic I could see him serving up about 20-25 gopher balls in that ballpark. The Phillies wouldn't be saving much money either, if any, so I don't see this deal happening.Comment

Any link to this would be great, especially if it's legit! I'd take Abreu for those two in a second though as a stand alone trade.Comment

Re: Phillies going after Manny Ramirez
I would agree CWood2. In an trade scenario involving Ramirez the Sox have to get a right handed bat that can drive in some runs next year. The rest of their lineup is too old to hang on for 2-3 years for young guys like Milledge to produce. I still dont want the Mets anywhere near Ramirez, but for the Sox they have to get a bat in some way.Comment

Manny won't be a Phillie nor an Angel.
Nobody will be giving the Sox a right-handed power hitting, run producing batter that is close to a Manny Ramirez. So they will not trade him. Manny is just going to have to suck it up and stay in Boston.Comment

Re: Phillies going after Manny Ramirez
Good point, and I hope that works to our benefit..."our" being those who want Manny here like myself. I like Abreu more than Troy Glaus, but having another lefty is not helping ease the loss of Manny's bat. Of all the offseasons to enforce the "trade Manny mandate," it had to be the one with a serious shortage of right-handed power!Comment

Re: Phillies going after Manny Ramirez
Phillies rejected Wells for Abreu.
The source also said new Phillies general manager Pat Gillick recently rejected a Abreu for outfielder Vernon Wells trade proposal from Toronto.
The biggest reason these rumored deals probably will die is the Phillies are shopping Abreu with hopes of landing a No. 1 starter due to a very weak free-agent starting pitcher market.Comment
