Latest Cubs Rumors - Furcal, Wood, Nixon

As we approach the winter meetings, all kinds of crazy rumors are making the rounds. First and foremost is a possible three-way deal between the Rangers, A's, and Cubs as reported by Sunday's edition of the Chicago Tribune. WSCR, a radio station in Chicago, has cited tomorrow's Phil Rogers column about the trade.

The details: The Cubs send Kerry Wood and $6MM to the Rangers for Kevin Mench. The Cubs would also surrender Todd Walker and prospects and would receive Barry Zito from Oakland. It's unclear what prospects would go Oakland's way, although it's fair to speculate Beane would ask for #1 prospect Felix Pie. Thanks to Alex and Mike for passing it along, and you can read a message board thread on the deal here.

My opinion? Doesn't sound valid in the proposed form. As mentioned on the Inside The Ivy message board, it sounds more like a Phil Rogers opinion column. Rogers can't be reached to confirm the rumor. The Cubs have plenty of starting pitcher and outfielder options on the table, and can make a deal without surrendering Pie. Given that Beane holds the cards with six starters, only the Cubs' very best could entice him. I don't think this deal happens.

I've also been informed that George Ofman from WSCR is reporting that Rafael Furcal will make his final decision by noon CST on December 4th. It's still unknown which way he's leaning. It's well-known that the Dodgers have put in a three-year, $39MM bid for the shortstop. The offer is a smart one and mitigates L.A.'s risk nicely. Given that it could bring Furcal more money in both the short and long term, the Dodgers must be a serious option.

A source in the Red Sox organization mentions that the Cubs have interest in 31 year-old right fielder Trot Nixon. Nixon hasn't had 500 at-bats since 2002, but he's hit well when healthy. Nixon mashes right-handers but struggles mightily with southpaws. The Red Sox are rumored to have interest in Corey Patterson.

My thoughts exactly. Now the rumor of Manny for Soriano is showing that this prolly isn't gonna happen. Nixon would be good as a RF if he could stay healthy though.

If I ever see Corey Patterson in a Red Sox uniform I'll have to puke.

Cubs don't have much value to my knowledge in there farm that they can give up to get Zito and Mench.

Yeah right any of this would happen. Do we fail to remember that the Tribune Company is one of, if not the most tight fisted major conglomerate around.

Hendry also will be looking for a right fielder to replace Jeromy Burnitz's numbers, preferably a left-handed hitter. That player also would have to come via trade because the free-agent market is pretty thin, unless the player would be Burnitz again. He, however, would be a stopgap only if the Cubs cannot make a trade and could be signed late, as he was last year (Feb. 6) when he replaced Sammy Sosa.

Indications are the Cubs may get involved in a multiplayer deal. One report of a rumored trade: pitcher Jerome Williams, outfielder Corey Patterson and second baseman Todd Walker to Texas for power-hitting second baseman Alfonso Soriano and outfielder Kevin Mench.

Other sources said they might go after former Cub Kenny Lofton, a favorite of manager Dusty Baker, Cincinnati's much-rumored Austin Kearns, or even Minnesota free agent Jacque Jones, a target of the Cardinals. Other reports have the Cubs pursuing the Dodgers' troubled Milton Bradley or Washington's Brad Wilkerson.

"I think the trade market is going to heat up the next couple of weeks," Hendry said. "There have been some tremendous trades already, including the White Sox and Phillies [Aaron Rowand for Jim Thome]. A lot of good players are being traded."
I really like the idea of Williams, Patterson, and Walker for Mench and Soriano (eventhough I really like Walker as a player). However, the Cubs (and any other team) should not go after Bradley

The Red Sox are not going to trade Nixon to the Cubs for Corey Patterson unless Wood or Prior was in the deal with him, so i think we can put that rumor to rest.

Mench i can see as he is pretty cost affective ($2 million next season) which would allow the Cubs to still pursue another bat. I would not expect it to be Soriano as he will likely get $10 million in arbitration.

Zito, if they can get him, great. But i think there are too many other teams with better players to offer than the Cubs have (unless the deal is Pie and Guzman).

What if they got Pierre, Zito, and Mench? What would you think then? I'm pretty disappointed they didn't get Furcal and I'm surprised he went to the Dodgers as they just started to pursue him this week. Props to you for seeing that one right.

                        This isnt fantasy baseball.

                        1) The A's will never trade Zito for Walker and a few prospects.
                        2) The Cubs will NEVER trade their highly regarded prospect, Felix Pie.
                        3) What makes you think that Mench will be any different than Burnitz? Mench might get on base a little bit more, but they're pretty much the same type of player.
                        3) Pierre? Where are the rumors that the Cubs are going to land Pierre? Pierre is looking to go to the Yankees cause they're willing to give up major pitching prospects.

Sorry but I really dont see any of this happening, and like I stated before... LOL

And even adding those players wont help the team as much as you would like. They give up Walker, Felix Pie, Patterson, Wood, and a few other prospects. They get in return a speedster, a lefty in the rotation, and a mediocre RF.

                        Who's your 2B? Who's your SS?

No defense up the middle, and please dont tell me Neifi Perez and Hairston is the answer.

I don't know if any of the stuff is true but Barry Zito is my favorite player and if he goes to the Cubs I would be the happiest man in the world .

Oh yeah I hope Furcal enjoys losing in LA.
