Dodgers still need a lot of help, and they wasted a big chunk of money. They better hope they find some farm gems.

I say all of this as a huge Furcal fan.

You and me both 3rdAnswer, and I agree. As for what gsharpe mentioned, I'll take Wilson Betemit and give him every chance to succeed as a starter before I waste money on Julio Lugo or the like. Juan Pierre makes some sense too, I wonder if they give up Johnson or Langerhans since they're very similar...

The Dodgers have actually found a way to spend $40 million dollars and make their lineup weaker.

As for the Braves, many expect the Braves to trade for Devil Rays SS Julio Lugo at this weeks owners meetings. Others to watch for are soon-to-be-former Marlins SS Alex Gonzalez and Deivi Cruz as stop-gaps until Anthony Pena is ready to join the Braves.
Tony Pena Jr isn't the answer for Atlanta. They would be better off letting Betemit start.

Haven't seen him play, but Baseball America doesn't even have him in their top 10 that they just put out, with 2 other shortstops rated in the top 5 for Atlanta. I think Pena and Luis Hernandez fit the mold of smaller, defensive wizards with no power which seem to be outdated.

I know he didn't exactly make a great impression last season during his couple cups of coffee, but have the Braves given any consideration to possibly moving Marte to short?

I don't care if the Dodgers overpayed.

This weakens the Braves a bit more.

Not so fast, my friend. It just gives them more money to spend on a dominant closer.

Yeah, offer Hoffman a contract, San Diego will match it.

I'm convinced that money isn't an issue here in San Diego, Moores wants Hoffman to come back. It's just a matter of what the market offers Hoffman before they make they move.

Marte is too big to play short. Escobar is going to get a shot at some point this year. Probably not in ST, but if he continues progressing like he has, late summer isn't out of the question. That kid is a star in waiting. Elvis Andrus is the other prospect in ATL's Top 10, but he is a solid 4 years away. He graded out higher than anyone ATL has signed out of South America/Caribbean, ever.

They said that about Cal Ripken and look what happened to him. Size shouldn't be the only qualifier for a position.

Broad shoulders, and mobility is not his strong suit.

                        He's too big.

How many dominant closers are there out there so far? There really aren't any unless you maybe want to consider Hoffman, who's past his prime. You can't tell me this doesn't weaken the Braves, but we should all know by now that the Braves just seem to find a way to win year in year out (in the regular season that is).

Khalil Greene is bigger than that at 5'10" 220.

Marte's listed at 185 lbs, but I suspect he's a good bit bigger than that now. He's basically your prototypical slow, power-hitting 3rd baseman. They tried him in the outfield last winter but gave up on it after a month... He's supposed to be a fine defensive 3rd baseman, though.

whatever props the Dodgers deserve for not overpaying for Beltre last year go right out the window with this garbage contract.
